    Gun Question

Thanks for all the input everybody. The .270 has servered me well over the years for mule deer, but I have never had to try shots at the ranges I hear about on this site,I am new at hunting Coues and I guess I was thinking I might need to buy another Rifle in a differant caliber and set it up just for long range shots, then again I see some really nice bucks taken by the Bow hunters on this site, and I'm pretty sure most of their shots are under 75 yards or less,so I thought if they can get that close with a bow,I should be able to get closer than 500 yards or more.

    Gun Question

Right now I have a friend making hand loads for me at 130 grains, seems to be pretty consistant at a 3 inch group at 200 yards at the range, could always use more practice, was just wondering if this set up would be in the realm of some of the shots I hear about on this site,5 6 700 yards.

    unit 8

Well just got back from 2 more days in unit 8 trying to to fill my tag,but still no luck.I got to get back to work,so thats it for this this year.It might sound crazy, but I'm putting in for this same hunt unit next year. This was my first try at hunting Coues and here are some of the things I learned this year. 1.If it seems like a easy hike hike going in,you can bet it will be hard coming out 2.I carry way to much in my Backpack, most of which I never used 3.Never go cheap on anything you buy,I bought a cheap plastic water bottle and it split down the side 4.Make sure your in shape,I thought I was until I started climing out of those canyons 5.You can never scout your area to much 6.Try out any new equiptment, before you take it out with you on your hunt I will be back up there come Bow season, learning more about the unit and hopefully getting a chance at one.The best thing about this years hunt was ,I got some of the best sleep I've had in years, after a long day hiking those canyons, back to camp for a hot meal, the cold night air,I slept like a baby every night
  7. Just got back from 3 days in unit 8 trying to fill my first ever AZ Whitail tag, seen lots of Deer ,mule deer that is and a ton of Elk,including some monsters,We saw only 3 whitelails so far all of them Does, heading back thur for another try.I thought I was in pretty good shape, but unit 8 is kicking my butt, deep canyons and thick brush make for a hard day.Hope for a better report later this week

Sweet and sour 2011 archery elk hunt in unit 1

I heard a story just like this a few years ago,a guy took his wife on her first elk hunt and told her ,if you get one make sure you put your tag on it right away, because there are people who will steal your elk from you.Sure enough he heard a shot from the direction where he had set her up in a blind,he went back to check on her and when he got there he was surprised to see her pointing her rifle at a guy standing there with his hands in the air.The guy yelled ,hey Mister! tell her she can keep it,I just wanted to get my saddle back
  12. I have always closed one eye when shooting thru a Scope,I was at Cabelas today looking at Scopes, and the Guy told me that your supposed to keep both eyes open when you shoot thur a Scope, whats the correct way or is it just what ever you feel fits you best?

    First coues hunt!!!

I just finished this book and found if very helpful,I drew a tag in unit 8 this year, but there was no info in the book on that area,so I took a chance and looked up Mr.Adams number and called and left a message. Not only did he call me back, but he spent about a 1/2 hour giving me tips on Coues hunting, and also gave me some areas to start in that unit, what a great guy,I was so surprised,if I can ever afford it ,you can bet he will be the guide I choose first!
  14. I went to see her about once a week for over 6 months, until I had saved enough money to finally have her. That was one of the proudest days in my young life at that time. The year was 1978 and I was 17 years old,and she was a Remington 700 ,left handed Bolt action .270 She came complete with a Burris 3x9 Scope that never seemed to fail,if you spent the right amount of time with her.Well flash forward 30 plus years and I decided its time to get her a new a new hat,she now has a Brand new Leupold 4x12 Rifleman on her, hope I get to spend another 30 years with her.
  15. Just got back from my first scouting trip, and thanks to some helpful advise from a few members,I saw quite a few deer.I'm new at this ,so I cant tell you how they rated as far as score goes, but they were breathing and they had horns and thats good enough for me.I didnt know how sneakey they were until this trip,I was up on a ridge with the spotting scope, looking down into a small caynon where my buddy was walking ,about 600yds away, and I swear I seen one crawling on its belly behind him after he walked by,he never even knew it was there, anyways thanks for the help everybody,I sure feel better about this season now,at least I know that they are there.

    1st Scouting Trip

Going back next weekend for a second trip,Hope I have the same sucess as far as seeing deer.Through a mistake on my part when filling out the hunt application,I got this hunt tag,I have never hunted unit 8 before, but I plan to try and make the most of it.I have been doing alot of homework for this hunt, and rumor has it that there are Monsters living in those hills

    1st Scouting Trip

Well if it was over by 36B, it may have been one of those crafty illegals. Who knew they may have learned to camouflage themselves as deer.

    THIS HAPPENED TO ME!!!

In the early 80's I was on a Elk hunt, up near Meeker Colorado. On the first day we had to ride in to camp on horseback,it was about a 4 hour ride, anyways were going along this steep part of the trail, dropoff on one side and sheer cliff on the other, finally we reach the end and the trail takes a hard right, just then the guide whos in the lead, his horse spooks and jumps over to one side and almost looses him. He's yelling and screaming at the horse, trying to figure out what the heck caused all the excitement, and at about the same time we all seen the cause, about 20 yards up the trail, about 20 feet up in a tree,we see about 5 ft of toilet paper flying around, and yep! sure enough theres a guy in a tree stand trying to get his pants up,guess he didnt hear us comming and when we made the turn at the top of the trail , and we rode right in on em.
  19. I bought a pair of the Vortex viper 10x42 last year and I love them,My next purchase I thought was going to be a Vortex spotting scope, but I've been hearing so many good things about the Vortex Kaibab Binos that I am now leaning toward getting them ,and setting them up on a tripod. My question is ,do I still need the spotting scope with this setup or is it overkill to have them both?If I need em both ,I"ll get both, just thinking its more stuff to carry. Thanks for any input.I"m new to this site but have learned so much in a short time, get lots of good info, plus answer alot of questions just by reading the old posts.I was going to ask about a Rifle setup, but I'm kind of a one gun kind of guy,and the old rem 700 in 270 that I have shot for years has served me well,so I guess I"ll stick with it for now, although I have never taken shots like I have been reading about in the 4-5 hundred yard range, but I figure if guys are able to take them with a bow,I should be able to get to a range that I am confident in,Thanks again
