Father & Son's First Arizona Mule Deer Bucks 2012
bigorange replied to CampbellsCouesAdventures's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Nice bucks. Congrats! -
Awfully quiet on here for opening day of a hunt...hopefully everyone is packing out and hasn't had a chance to post pics yet! Any luck? Looking cloudy, rainy, and windy in the southern units...heading to 36B on Monday to help my buddy if he hasn't tagged out by then. I did see a text from another member who helped his dad get on a 3x3 this morning...got it done. Bradley

Test successful. Awesome buck! How about a story to go with it...
-
Glad you recovered it but still sucks. USAA is great...hopefully they take good care of you.
-
Awesome bucks...CONGRATS! I love seeing the kids getting it done...can't wait to get my son out there in a couple of years with his first tag.
-
Awesome story...congrats! Bucknasty is a toad! Love all the extras... Glad everything turned out okay with the dropped rifle. I HATE it when that happens and can ruin a hunt.

Big and Wide, Wifes 2012 Buck
bigorange replied to mklong40's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Wow! Awesome buck and a great start to hunting. Hopefully not ruined for life. Congrats! -
I have it saved on another computer. I'll post it soon if nobody else has, but might be after the weekend. I always save off the original list so I can come back to it since AZGFD always updates it.

Agree...Backcountry Navigator. My buddy has it on his Droid and is very useful. He used it a lot on our elk hunt...one thing he noticed is it seems to run down the battery a lot faster even when off the cell network. I wish it was available on iPhone. I may try out the other one mentioned above for iPhone.

Awesome Steve. Congrats to you both and glad you got to help him get it done one more time.
-
Pig....waiting on my buddy to check his to find out on turkey.

Mine got hit today too.

Quail near Tucson without a dog
bigorange posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Any general areas or general advice for quail hunting near Tucson without a dog? I've been seeing a few when out for doves or deer, but haven't actually hunted them in quite a few years. I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks! Ps - glad to see the forum back up and running...I couldn't get to it from computer or my phone. Still shaking a little from withdrawals. -
Maybe spikes shouldn't count since they're just big eyeguards. Ouch! You took away my only 2 point! Is that the Boone & Obama Scoring System! Raises another thought...so how do folks report the points on the AZGFD survey post-hunt? Unfortunately I've had the luck to answer No to the harvesting a deer question so it hasn't come up for me....maybe this year.

Thanks all for the comments and history. I think this is pretty interesting, especially since it's counter to how I was taught when I started hunting. If you could hang a ring on it we counted it as a point. Of course I no longer hunt out of treestands over corn or bean fields so I've learned other new tricks.

Looks like it's going to be a cold one.

As long as it's not gusting like it was last year...that made things a little difficult. At least where I was. Good luck to all. Still a few more weeks until I get to get out there. -
Video of Best buck SO FAR...

Awesome video...thanks for sharing. Nice buck too! -
I'm not killing large bucks or small bucks, but not because I'm passing on them! Just haven't been able to get it done...
-
Awesome...starting that baby off right! Congrats!

I think this is sort of like the presidential debates on TV...we can discuss differing viewpoints all we want and I doubt anyone's opinion will be changed. And that's what I've really enjoyed about this site...all the differing viewpoints and approaches to hunting. For anyone who has taken the AZGFD hunter ed program, this relates to the 5 stages of a hunter. Even though it seems pretty hokey during the training. We're all at different stages in our hunting life and our goals are different. I often feel like a combination of a couple of stages that aren't even next to each other. I've killed my share of deer in other states, but as far as AZ hunting and especially coues I've struck out for a few years. I'm at the point now of wanting to put any legal meat in the freezer. I sure this may change over time and with more success...or maybe I've gone straight to the last stage since I enjoy the hunting experience more than anything now. (Geez I hope I'm not getting that old already ) As others have pointed out the results of various management approaches have been well documented in other states and areas. If the law changes then I'll most certainly be the first to comply with whatever regulations are put into place. Bottom line...to each his own and makes for good discussion but not worth arguing or getting aggressive or defensive about it. Certainly not name-calling even though I still think trolls have pretty cool hair.
