The Journey to a Great Antelope Hunt! Picture Heavy!
bigorange replied to SirRoyal's topic in Antelope Hunting
You sir are a gentleman, and selflessly shared a lot of information with me that helped tremendously on my hunt. That tire was one of the craziest things I've ever seen as it sailed past my passenger side as I drove down the shoulder. Divine intervention is right...that tire was on a crash course for the cab of your truck and took a high bounce. Nice buck...glad your hunter got it done and hopefully some of the information I shared from my hunt helped you out as well. I'm not good at identifying specific bucks..maybe that's one I saw too. Good luck on the rest of your hunts. -
Awesome...congrats!

Not that experienced myself, but a much more experienced hunter taught me to use face paint...his reasoning was it wasn't as hot as a facenet or mask, nothing to snag, and didn't have to put it on for a stalk. I have to reapply periodically due to sweat and wiping it off. Saw a post recently about Carbomask...clay-based, made with activated charcoal. Seems interesting and maybe less messy than the paint.

Bump for a nice pack. Have same one and love it!

My smallest but probably will be one of the most memorable

Man...where's the love button on this post! Awesome! BTW I half expected the same thing to happen to me...we went exploring on Saturday afternoon in the truck. Didn't take my bow with me, so I just knew we'd see a buck. Didn't see any deer, but the kids had a blast. -
His tag. His deer...with a bow. His smile. Congrats!

Looking for advice on raising a child into a hunter
bigorange replied to TonyC's topic in Youth Hunters
Lots of great advice here, and you're on the right track already since you're concerned and asking the questions. Keep them engaged and keep the outings about them and fun on their level...the worst thing you can do is take them out for hours of glassing or sitting in a blind or stand. Short-term is great, but remember their attention span. My kids like to go along when I'm glassing, but they don't glass much themselves...usually exploring, sometimes reading, or even shooting the bb gun. They just like being out and being with me which is what I'm hoping to keep them interested. We go camping about once a month, so really get our kids out and get them unplugged as much as possible. Sometimes these trips turn into "hunting" trips, and we have a blast exploring and looking at tracks, scat, and other sign. My kids are pretty lucky at spotting animals too. Don't take them hunting with the same expectations you have when you go hunting yourself...they may not be as quiet or as still as you want, and chances are you won't harvest anything. But make sure they're having fun and it will pay off in the long run. Oh yeah +10 on getting them involved with some of the youth programs and camps. Those are a blast, and sometimes I think I have as much fun as the kids do. -
Nice buck. Shooter for sure.

Forgot about that...re-applying scent spray is refreshing too.

I wear a synthetic shirt similar to under armour that PRDATR mentions. (Man do those things stink after a few days sitting) and a cooling towel. One of the other hunters on my antelope hunt used this and said it was great...2 blocks of ice along with his water and other drinks. Solar-powered fan forced air out and made a mini-AC for the blind. Not something for a long pack in, but he said it definitely made sitting all day a lot more bearable.

Here's how you fix the issue. Move everything to one side, go thru it while you do and sell/donate stuff. Epoxy one side and when completed wait a week or so and repeat on the other side Oh Naturegirl how you underestimate me and my garage. I would have to build a room addition 1st!I remember this one weekend a couple years ago I got a wild hair and did a bunch of clearing out and actually got 2 cars in my garage. I even have a pic somewhere to prove it. Now can barely fit one...

I don't know about access issues either, but agree with TJ...welcome to the site and looking forward to pics and story from your hunt. I can tell you during my archery hunt we saw several bucks off hwy 89 and I believe that ranch has walk-in access. Not sure about muzzy but definitely during archery. (No secret spot...well-known and discussed in a couple other places on this site)

65 yards. I did miss one at 90...right on target and he stepped out of the way as they tend to do. LoL -

Pleasure meeting you too! Thanks so much for the conversation, pointers, and friendship. Ended up killing him the same place you and I met the day before my hunt started. -
Reminds me I need to flex all those arrows that didn't connect with speedgoats before I shoot them again...

Jr deer hunt, I think daddy is getting more & more excited
bigorange replied to Shooter McGavin's topic in Youth Hunters
Nice! Looks like maybe the range down off Harrison. Yeah plenty of cannons down there most of the time. Can't wait for my kids to get their first tags! -
Solid copper bullet better performance on larger animals or smaller coues?
bigorange replied to apache12's topic in Long Range Shooting
Mule deer last year with .270 TTSX at 250 yds. No bone, straight through lungs. Lung looked like had been hit with a 4-blade broad head from the petaling and huge exit hole. Went maybe 50 yds. -
My buddy's kid is in this month's Eastmans with his bull from last fall. Top right.

Bump for nice glass. Just picked up a pair of these myself...

Not me...drew with less than 10.

I was very sorry to see this too. According to a Facebook post the lion was killed by a hunter, but not until after it also got one of his dogs. Seemed to have no fear of dogs or humans.
-
Sounds like a great time. Youth Outdoors has great camps...can't wait to get my son out to another one.

Same here. Phone and old site say I drew. Portal shows not drawn, but bonus points for that species zeroed.
