Another coueswhitetail sticker siting.
azhuntnut replied to COUESAZ's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Yeah that was the truck. I didn't see you until you were coming past me. I didn't hear the horn, otherwise I would have waved to you. Bass, let me know when you are ready to lift your truck. I will get you set up with Offroad Unlimited. AZ, what part of town do you live in? David -

I saw one last week on the loop 101 right around 67th ave. It was on the back of a red truck, but I can't remember what kind. David -

Trail camera pics

KP, We were actually standing right above them yesterday. This is at the bottom of a deep river bottom with boulders on both sides. We were just standing on the boulders looking down on them. David -
I went to my favorite spot that never has any hunting pressure and to my surprise there was a quad riding into my area. I had bedded the pigs down the night before and this guy on the quad left the two track he was on and drove right into the river bed where they were bedded. I was to dark still for me to see where they all went. I finally found them about 8am, but they kept moving due to the fact the hunters were quail hunting and all the shooting was spooking the pigs. But that wasn't the only problem I ran into that morning. I forgot to bring my tag along with me. Luckily I have a great wife, so I gave her a call and she met me in Wickenburg with my tag. So I went back to my spot and found the pigs again. They had settled down a bit, so I was off after them. I got in close to three different pigs, but they were to small and one had two babies with her. I am in a big pig contest this year, so I am waiting for a biggin. I did have one rush me and stop at about six feet, but I thought a skull shot wouldn't be ethical. I will be on them again on Sat. and get some video of the kill shot. David

what to carry for javelina
azhuntnut replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
A rubber mallet, since you can walk right up to those little rats. I love getting 5-10 yards away from them when I shoot em with my bow. David -
I went up to do some scouting for my pig hunt in January and found the same group of pigs I shot my pig out of last year within 30 yards of where I shot him. These pigs have been in this same area now for 13 years. I have never seen another hunter in the area. The picture is about 600 yards through my scope set on 30x. On another note, while I was up there I tried out my new Christmas present. A double bull Matrix blind. I did some varmit calling, but nothing came in. But, you can take a great nap inside one of these. Plenty of shade and no wind.

I used to love hunting 32 until everybody else started loving it even more. I have seen some good deer in this unit, and it looks like Scott found them. Nice deer. David

Neat finds while roaming the hills

I always like to look for old mining relics while out hunting. Two years ago I was deer hunting near Stanton Octave and found one of my oldest mining claims. It was still in the original tobacco can with no dents, just a little rusty. If you look closely at the document, you can see that it was written in August of 1928. I am going to try and have it restored and try to see if any of this persons family still lives in Arizona. I also found another one behind Fort Grant a couple years ago way up in the pines stuffed inside of an old alka selzer bottle. The date on that one is from 1956. The claim was from the Hoot-Owl mine and the names were Charles D. Stevens and Robert F. Stevens. Anybody know these guys? I have also found some flour cans that are in good shape from the late 20's that only cost 10 cents. David -
I posted this over on the AZOD board, but thought it might interest some of you guys that don't check out that site. I sure would like to find something like this. David This guy is selling a rack he found that was killed by another elk. If you look in the picture you can see where the other elk had broken his antler off inside of the skull. Now that bull must have had a splitting head ache. I doubt that bull is 340in. David http://modzilla.com/horns.php

That is a very nice buck indeed. As for them Safford boys, I have hunted near the Safford area for the last couple years and have had the honor of meeting some of the nicest people around. Its a nice change when you get out of the Phx area and see how laid back folks are in the small towns. The hunters there are more than happy to pass along hunting info and areas to hunt. One gentleman I met even let me leave my fifth wheel at his house for a month while I hunted bear. Mason, enjoy your great deer. I was going through the same feelings back in September. David

I have got a 377inch bull I will sell for $150000.00.

Nice cat. I am heading out in the morning to try out my new Foxpro FX3. I hope to call in a bobcat or even a big kitty. I will let you guys know how it works. David

Nice deer Todd. Have you put a score on him yet? Did you see any lions while you were there? David
-
Well I got my bull scored this week by Chris Krueger. I was a little suprised to find out that the extra point between the fourth and fifth point on my bull could not be added to my score since it is considered abnormal by the pope and young rule book. So right away the bull lost almost 14 inches to his score. The gross Pope and Young score came out to 363 7/8, with 25 7/8 inches of deductions he will net score 338 0/8. Now if you added everything up the gross SCI score was 377 6/8. I think if a bull grows the horns, he deserves everything he's got. His G-1's were both 21 4/8 and the main beams were a little over 53 inches. David

Those are some great picks. What type of camera are you using? David

Pope and Young does have a non-typical section. The minimum score I think is 320, so it would fall into the lower part. I am very happy with this bull no matter where it falls in the book. I couldn't have asked for anything more. I am just excited that I made it into the book. I am taking advantage of the moment since I will probably never shoot a bull like this again. Thanks for the congrats, I truly appreciate it. David

Did they say where at in Queen Creek? I just bought a Foxpro and want to give it a try. I am trying to get a bobcat and lion this winter with my bow. David
-
When I was at Chris's house we put the horns on a full sneak form and it was still to long. I think that a couple inches will have to be added to the form in order for it to fit on the wall. I already have a spot picked out in the house. David
-
Az Griz, I talked with Chris about that and he informed me that it would go higher in the book if I kept it as a typical. David

Seen the fee proposals for 2006?
azhuntnut replied to DesertBull's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I think Rembrant has hit it right on the mark. I know personally of a person that drew an oct. whitetail tag for whitetail and didn't show up for the hunt because he had felt ill on the Monday before his hunt started. He didn't want to take a chance of getting sick, even though he wasn't sick at all. He just wasn't a serious hunter and that tag got wasted in my opinion. I archery hunted pig ten years ago with a torn ACL and a knee brace, because I didn't want to waste a tag. The new fees are gonna cost alot of familys big money in the coming years, but think how much it costs to go to a baseball game and you don't even get to mount anything up on the wall. David -
Available online now. I drew a 20a/20c archery pig tag. I love chasing those little suckers around. David

I think the buck looks great. Those walls made me dizzy though. David -
This is my first matching set. Back in 2001 when I was on an elk hunt, my buddy found a perfect 6x6 rack from an elk about four feet apart. I must have walked right past them in the dark the night before. David

While I was out last weekend helping a friend on his hunt, I glassed a deer about 900 yards away. He looked real good, so we decided to make a stalk. While making a loop to get to him I came across one of his sheds. I was pretty exited to find one and then walked a little further and found the other side. You wouldn't believe how much bigger he is this year. I should have taken a picture through my scope, but forgot. We never could find the deer again. On the way back to the truck my buddy found another shed about 150 yards from where I found mine. I also found an elk shed the day before. David
