Maybe I'll give it a try

billrquimby, I have a quick question. I am using a Marlin 1894 .44 mag with 240 grain flat nose bullets on my bear hunt. I doubt the shot will be more than 30 yards with the type of terrain I am in. Do you think this is sufficient to kill a bear cleanly? I have other guns I could use, but I really wanted to shoot one with my lever action. I also have a model 336 in 30-30 that I can bring along. David
  2. Here is a closer pic of the two point. Every deer I have seen lately is still in velvet. Look how fat the one is on the right. David
  3. Finally got a picture of the bear I thought I located last weekend. I had several coues on my cameras, but not the big boy I saw twice this weekend while sitting in my blind. My digital camera makes to much noise when you turn it on to get any pics. I also had two of my trail cameras knock off of the trees by elk. They don't like the smell I guess. David
  4. The second pic is from the bear rubbing up against the tree I had my camera mounted to. The fourth is a nose of an elk. The last couple pics were taken from one of my cameras that was knocked to the ground, but still kept taking pictures. David
  5. Here are some pics from this past week. I was hoping to have a fat bear on some of my cameras, but mostly got elk. I did find where a bear is hanging out. I hope I can find him Friday morning. David Here is a little buck that seems to have some mass on him. Look at the time this coyote came through. The animals in this area don't seem to have any set schedule. They have been at my cameras at all times of the day and night. Elk
  6. I found one of these in my house about three months ago. Let me tell you, these suckers are fast and hard to kill. That other bug that was posted looks like what I call a sand scorpion. We used to find huge ones in a warehouse I worked at about ten years ago near 23ave south of Deer Valley. They would attack anything you through in with them. We knew this because we would catch as many as we could and put them in a bucket with other poisonous insects and let them fight to the death. David

    Scent Eliminator Sprays

If you are hunting in an area with elk I have a good way to cover your human scent. Last year a couple days before my elk hunt I washed all of my cloths in scent eliminator. I then through them in the dryer with a couple of those cow elk urine wafers. This will also get rid of your wife or get you kicked out of the house . After they were dry, I through them into a large ziplock bag with one of the wafers inside. During my hunt I had a herd of about 15 cows get downwind of me and never spooked. Throw a couple on your hat and belt loops. I am going to try it on my bear hunt next weekend and hang them on my Double Bull to cover my scent. David
  8. Thats pretty lucky you got your tag. Somebody forgot to put my license number on my application , so I didn't even get a tag. David

    unit 31 massive palmation

I met a old timer that lives at the base of Mt Graham that has been hunting there all of his life. He showed me some of the coues he has shot, all of them had that same type of palmation. They were all huge also, and would easily score over 100. He told me that he had shot alot of them just like the ones on his wall. There must be an area in there with the same genes. David

    Check out this pick up

I was out putting up some new cameras and checking some others when I found this nice coues in the bottom of a run off. I don't think it was a lion kill. I am going to try and score it this week and see what I come up with. I was so excited when I saw it, that I slid most of the way down the hill so my buddy behind me wouldn't beat me to it. I also saw a real tall coues when I was setting up one of my cameras. Hopefully he will be on my disk next weekend. David

Jimmy, I did not add the mass measurement out to the tip, so he is probably in the high eighties. Bass, I found him in 23. I hunted bear in here two years ago and saw a bow killed coues come out of the area within 100 yards of where I found this one that scored over 100 inches. That was the second one the guy had killed over 100 in the same spot. I will be bow hunting in there on the 1st. David

This was my first time scoring a whitetail, so I hope I did it right. Based on the Boone and Crockett website it would score 79 5/8's. These were just quick measurements, but should be fairly close. I certainly hope there is a lion in the area so I can call him in when I try calling a bear. I thought the skull was crushed from it being roled down the gullie it was in. Plus, I have never seen any cat sign in this area. There are alot of bears, so maybe a bear might have gotten it. I am just really happy I found it. Does anybody want to guess the score? David

    Unbelievable Dept. Mess UP!!!

I just recieved an email from a friend of mine telling me that game and fish contacted him stating that some numbers were incorrect on his credit card, but didn't get many details. They told him he wasn't charged the full amount and said he could send in the rest on a money order and receive a tag. I am still praying that all four of my rejected apps come back with the correct info they stated wasn't on there. They are mailing them out to me. What a mess. David

    RESULTS ARE UP

Bass, My buddy had the same thing show up on his. He called the number at the bottom of the page and they said the only thing that mattered was that it said he was not drawn. Everything else didn't matter. He is going down to find out more from them. David

    RESULTS ARE UP

I got a rejection notice on all four of my applications. It said I didn't provide a license number. I find that hard to believe since my license was right next to me while I was filling them out. I have never had a rejection notice in the twenty years I have been applying. David

    Why a spotting scope????

I see one facing and one looking away to the right. Jim, you need to take the patch off of your eye.

    Double bull blinds

How about one of those portable misters from Wally world. That should help cool the area down a bit. David

    Double bull blinds

I bought one of the new DB 360 blinds, but I haven't used it much yet. But you sure can take a good nap inside. It didn't seem to get to hot with the screens open. I am going to use it on my bear hunt in August, but I will be in the pines. David

    Microsheds

Dan, I have a small one like the one on the left also. I think it might even be a little shorter. I found these on the same day about 10 yards apart. David

    Why a spotting scope????

I second what Sundevil said. I can only see out of one eye, so a spotter was perfect for me. I have the Swaro ATS 80 and can spot animals pretty early in the morning. I have spotted pigs and deer as far way as two miles with my scope. The last two years I have owned it, I probably spotted a quarter more animals than when I was using binos alone. I also plan on getting the camera adaptor for mine. David

    Swaro 10x42 slc or el

I was in the same situation back in December. I couldn't decide between SLC or EL's. I then went down to Sportsman Warehouse and took a look at the Nikon Premier LX L's and the Swaro's at the same time. I thought the Nikons were a little brighter and they felt better in my hands. I also thought they were a little lighter. After that I decided to get the Nikons. I love them so far, and haven't had any issues. They also come with a no-fault 25 year warranty. I will be lucky if I use them for ten and buy another pair. Give them a chance when you are doing some comparing. David '
