Fall is here!!!
azhuntnut replied to Azlongears's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Redbeard, The elk are knocking my cameras off of the trees. I think maybe there is a smell on there that they don't like. Last weekend I had three cameras on the ground. David -
Stick with the Nikon, it has the better glass and the best warranty. I think the new Cabelas has the Nikon on sale right now for a pretty good deal. David

I have the same scope and use the Manfretto 3001BN. Its a little long, but you don't have to extend the legs much when you sit down. You can buy them online cheaper than here in the valley. David

I decided to run back out there Tuesday night and hunt in the morning. My bear was back in the same area again, only this time he proceded to tear up my trail camera. I got some pics, but they were either over exposed or blurry before he ripped it off of the tree. I must have just missed him in the morning, because I could see where he had walked throught the wet grass. Looks like I will be back in there in October. David

I left mine out twice last year. Once right before my elk hunt and the second time it was parked right off of 260 in 6a for about five days. I put some LED lights inside that run off of batteries. One of them lights up the trailer and the other blinks red. Nobody touched anything while I was gone. Make sure you leave the awning out and a couple chairs so it looks like somebody is there. David

I prefer the angled myself. Nikon carries a 25 year no fault warranty. If you run it over with your truck, send it back and they will fix it or replace it. All of the top players have good glass, some just spend more on advertising and putting there optics into the hands of big boy guides. Look through all of them and don't forget to make sure the eyepiece is comfortable to your eye socket. If you plan on digiscoping, Nikon has a nice set up. David

That thing is a toad. He sure looks bigger than 90. I sent the pictures out to some other guys and see what they can come up with. Great find, I am sure you will be getting alot of PM's. David

I have a whitetail located in 23 that also has the double beams. He is a real big 4x4. I have seen him twice now and I will try to get a picture of him in a couple weeks. David

Take a close look at the Nikon line before you buy a scope. I went through this last year when I was buying a new pair of binos. I had my mind set on Swaros, but finally decided to give the Nikon LX's a chance. When I did a comparison between the two, I noticed that the Nikons were a little brighter and felt better in my hand. I bought those instead of the Swaros. I also have the Swaro ATS 80 and like it alot. I wish I could have compared the two spotting scopes at the time of purchase. David

I worked up some loads years ago for my 300 win mag and they are deadly accurate out of my Browning A-Bolt Stalker with the Boss system. You can give them a try and see how they work with your gun. They are a little hot, so make sure you have a good recoil pad. Velocity coming out of the barrel is 3250fps. I am using Remington cases and loading them up with 72 grains of IMR 4350 and topping them off with Sierra Boattail 165 Grain bullets. You might want to try loading 5 each with a little more or a little less and see how your gun likes them. I can't remember the overall length of the bullet, but I know they just barely make it into my clip. Clean out the barrel really good and then shoot two foulers and start from there. I hope this helps you out. David

billrquimby, I have a quick question. I am using a Marlin 1894 .44 mag with 240 grain flat nose bullets on my bear hunt. I doubt the shot will be more than 30 yards with the type of terrain I am in. Do you think this is sufficient to kill a bear cleanly? I have other guns I could use, but I really wanted to shoot one with my lever action. I also have a model 336 in 30-30 that I can bring along. Trail pics from past week
azhuntnut replied to azhuntnut's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Here is a closer pic of the two point. Every deer I have seen lately is still in velvet. Look how fat the one is on the right. David -
Finally got a picture of the bear I thought I located last weekend. I had several coues on my cameras, but not the big boy I saw twice this weekend while sitting in my blind. My digital camera makes to much noise when you turn it on to get any pics. I also had two of my trail cameras knock off of the trees by elk. They don't like the smell I guess. David

Trail pics from past week

The second pic is from the bear rubbing up against the tree I had my camera mounted to. The fourth is a nose of an elk. The last couple pics were taken from one of my cameras that was knocked to the ground, but still kept taking pictures. David -
Here are some pics from this past week. I was hoping to have a fat bear on some of my cameras, but mostly got elk. I did find where a bear is hanging out. I hope I can find him Friday morning. David Here is a little buck that seems to have some mass on him. Look at the time this coyote came through. The animals in this area don't seem to have any set schedule. They have been at my cameras at all times of the day and night. Elk

Coues country's other inhabitants
azhuntnut replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I found one of these in my house about three months ago. Let me tell you, these suckers are fast and hard to kill. That other bug that was posted looks like what I call a sand scorpion. We used to find huge ones in a warehouse I worked at about ten years ago near 23ave south of Deer Valley. They would attack anything you through in with them. We knew this because we would catch as many as we could and put them in a bucket with other poisonous insects and let them fight to the death. David -
If you are hunting in an area with elk I have a good way to cover your human scent. Last year a couple days before my elk hunt I washed all of my cloths in scent eliminator. I then through them in the dryer with a couple of those cow elk urine wafers. This will also get rid of your wife or get you kicked out of the house . After they were dry, I through them into a large ziplock bag with one of the wafers inside. During my hunt I had a herd of about 15 cows get downwind of me and never spooked. Throw a couple on your hat and belt loops. I am going to try it on my bear hunt next weekend and hang them on my Double Bull to cover my scent. David

Hunters looking out for Hunters

Thats pretty lucky you got your tag. Somebody forgot to put my license number on my application , so I didn't even get a tag. David -
I met a old timer that lives at the base of Mt Graham that has been hunting there all of his life. He showed me some of the coues he has shot, all of them had that same type of palmation. They were all huge also, and would easily score over 100. He told me that he had shot alot of them just like the ones on his wall. There must be an area in there with the same genes. David

I was out putting up some new cameras and checking some others when I found this nice coues in the bottom of a run off. I don't think it was a lion kill. I am going to try and score it this week and see what I come up with. I was so excited when I saw it, that I slid most of the way down the hill so my buddy behind me wouldn't beat me to it. I also saw a real tall coues when I was setting up one of my cameras. Hopefully he will be on my disk next weekend. David

Jimmy, I did not add the mass measurement out to the tip, so he is probably in the high eighties. Bass, I found him in 23. I hunted bear in here two years ago and saw a bow killed coues come out of the area within 100 yards of where I found this one that scored over 100 inches. That was the second one the guy had killed over 100 in the same spot. I will be bow hunting in there on the 1st. David

This was my first time scoring a whitetail, so I hope I did it right. Based on the Boone and Crockett website it would score 79 5/8's. These were just quick measurements, but should be fairly close. I certainly hope there is a lion in the area so I can call him in when I try calling a bear. David http://www.boone-crockett.org/bgRecords/bc...pwhitetail2.asp

I thought the skull was crushed from it being roled down the gullie it was in. Plus, I have never seen any cat sign in this area. There are alot of bears, so maybe a bear might have gotten it. I am just really happy I found it. Does anybody want to guess the score? David

Unbelievable Dept. Mess UP!!!
azhuntnut replied to azcamohead's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I just recieved an email from a friend of mine telling me that game and fish contacted him stating that some numbers were incorrect on his credit card, but didn't get many details. They told him he wasn't charged the full amount and said he could send in the rest on a money order and receive a tag. I am still praying that all four of my rejected apps come back with the correct info they stated wasn't on there. They are mailing them out to me. What a mess. David -

I have already requested copys of my apps since they said I was rejected on all four. David
