    Magnus Snuffer SS

Well I am going to get some Snuffer SS's and the Stinger Buzzcut and give them a test run. I have read that the buzzcuts fly just like the stingers, but leave more blood. I am going to test them some elk meat and see what happens. David

    Magnus Snuffer SS

Has anybody had any first hand experience using the Magnus Snuffer SS broadhead? What type of bloodtrail did it leave? I had my mind made up to use the Stinger four blade again this year on my elk hunt, but I have been reading about bad blood trails with this head. My last elk only ran about fourty yards, so I didn't need to trail it. The arrow was still stuck in the elk, so no blood came out at all. It did an awesome job on the internals, but I am just afraid if I make a marginal shot I might not have a good blood trail. David http://www.magnusbroadheads.com/snufferss.html

    Not Coues, but...

Ron, Were you near the property? I have been hitting some of the roads around us, but haven't found anything yet. You hit jackpot on that outing. I helped Mark set up three cameras around both units last weekend along with some salt and sweet feed in a feeder. David

    Bear raffle tag hunt

This past weekend I had the opportunity to join a friend of mine that won the Az game and fish big game raffle bear tag. He was contacted by a very nice gentlemen named Kevin Presmyk who runs Full Draw Guide Service. Kevin offered to take him out and run his dogs until we found a big bear. We started out Saturday morning around 5am, and hit a trail around 7am. The dogs took off on the trail while we hung back and listened. After a while, Kevin got out a tracking device got a good idea where the dogs ended up. They had been on a good trail, but had ran the wrong direction and ended up where the bear had beded that night. It took us a while to round up all of the dogs and by that time it was getting hot and the dogs needed a little rest. We all decided to start again early Sunday morning. Sunday was pretty slow. We drove around for about three hours before the dogs found anything. We were pretty close to a canyon when they took off back towards the forest instead of down into the canyon. We were all relieved that we would not have to go down into it. While waiting for the dogs to tree the bear, I decided to glass the canyon for a while. I hadn't even been glassing for a couple minutes when I spotted a little black bear at the very bottom of the canyon about a half mile away. We all agreed it was just a small bear and decided to go see what the dogs had found. It took us a while, but found the dogs a couple miles from where we let them off. Once again they had gone the wrong direction and ended at the bears bedding site. We all talked for a while and thought we should go back to the canyon and see if there was another bear hanging around. I went out on a point and started glassing the same area, but couldn't find any bears, but did see three nice bulls feeding. Kevin then decided to head down into the canyon with about ten dogs and try to tree the bear so we could get some pics. He had a few youngs dogs along and wanted to get them on a bear. My buddy Mark, who won the tag decided to stay up top since he is older and doesn't hike that much anymore, while myself and five other guys went down. The rest of the group got out ahead of me since I was just pokin along looking for sheds. When I was almost to the bottom, I could see the guys were going in the wrong direction. I turned them around to where I had seen the bear. When Kevin got with 50 yards of where I saw the bear, one of the other guys below me about 100 yards yelled out that there was a brown bear just ahead of a dog. It had a couple cubs with it. When the dogs hit the scent, they really started to sing. About ten seconds later he yelled "theres another bear". Of course all of the guys on the bottom of the canyon were yelling "where are they". They couldn't see around all of the brush. It got real exciting at this point, and I wanted to get a better view. I tried slabbing the side of the canyon, but it was very steep and starting to rain, making it very hard to stay on my feet. I finally made it to a better spot to see three dogs corner a bear across the canyon under a big rock. One dog got knocked around, but didn't get hurt. I watched for about ten minutes, and then they started calling the dogs off. It was now pouring rain, and you couldn't see very far. I decided to head back up to the top. Boy, I am still out of shape. When I met up with my friend Mark at the top, he asked me if I had seen all of the bears. I told him I had seen the two. He then proceeded to tell me that six bears had ran out of the same thicket, and were running up all sides of the canyon. There were four browns, one black, and a brown one that turned blond half way back. Apparently the blond one came up my side and crossed right above me. I heard a log role just above me, but didn't see the bear. He said they scattered just like Javelina getting spooked. Most of them were small, except the sow was pretty big. It took about an hour to get the rest of the guys and dogs out of the canyon. We called it a day at this point since the dogs were worn out and the rain was coming down pretty hard. It was a very exciting weekend and I don't think I will ever come across that many bears in one canyon again. I marked it on my GPS, so hopefully I can check it out again when the regular season starts in that unit. If anybody is looking for a great hunt behind dogs, Kevin was real nice and answered all of our stupid questions with a smile. He does lion and bears hunts. He is also guiding the bear auction tag buying this year. David

    Bear raffle tag hunt

Lance, They were hitting the berries. The guys on the bottom said that all of the bears came out of the bushes when they got close. I had just glassed the bushes thirty minutes before, but couldn't see anything since it was so thick.

    Weekend pics

Myself and the family were up in the Happy Jack area this weekend and got some pics from the Moqui tower and Mormon Lake. There were at least 300 elk out in the middle with 40 of them being bulls. I saw a couple that were pretty big. One in particular hard dark chocolate antlers. The hummingbirds were at the top of the tower. The orange ones only show up in Arizona around July and stay for a month. David

    Scent

If you plan on hunting where there are elk in the area, I had very good luck on my 05 hunt drying my cloths with the cow elk urine wafers. WARNING, do not do this at your house if you are married. It is a good cause for divorce. This year I will be drying my cloths at a laundry mat. David

    Anyone Seeing or Hearing???

I was hearing them about a month ago, but all of them were younger bulls. One of them really let out a pretty good one. David

    what are you guys doing?

I have been hiking alot on the weekends, but now I will start hitting north mountain at least three times a week with a full pack. I time myself each time and always try to beat it. I did this for my 2005 elk hunt and dropped 20 pounds in a month and a half. I also have a treadmill in the garage for the days I miss. David
  11. Lance, Is that the fifty dollar camera from walmart? My buddy got one and his batteries have been lasting almost a month and has gotten a ton of pics. David

    11M Bulls

Yeah, I got one picked out also. Thanks for teasin me Doug. I haven't hit that particular area yet during my scouting. Have you seen the Kachina non typical lately? David
  13. I called game and fish today to get to the bottom of this deal. I was told that anybody that applied online was sent a letter telling them they would need to submit either a cashiers check or money order, NO PERSONAL CHECKS. But some of these adults that did not read the directions correctly sent in checks anyways. So game and fish deciding that they would send out a SECOND letter with there personal check telling them again that they couldn't accept personal checks, and instructed them to send out verified funds. So since this directive wasn't on the books or regulations, it made the mistake acceptable to game and fish. David
  14. I did get a tag, but thats not the point being made here. Since when is it alright to award somebody for making a mistake. When you mess up at work, do they tell you what a great job you are doing and give you a raise. Of course not. Nobody ever learns anything in life unless there are consuquences or goals achieved. You mention what if it was a junior hunter. Well my apps I sent in last year had my boy on the apps. Since I made a mistake, he didn't get drawn, and neither did I. His life wasn't over at that point, but we both learned a valueable lesson from it. I do know from now on I won't ever make the same mistake again. Jim, Why don't you send in your apps next year without any money in them and let us know if you get a call back from game and fish. David

another roadkill - 3 more deer dead

During my scouting trips over the last couple months, I have seen a spike bull, calf, and doe mule deer hit on Lake Mary road. I think there was an elk hit near Kachina a while back by a truck. There was DPS checking out the vehicle when I went by and there was alot of front end damage. I really watch my speeds in the morning and evening while traveling these roads. I had four seperate instances where elk crossed the road right in front of me on 87 a while back. I can't believe how small those fawns are. Is it normal for them to have two fawns? David
  16. I have never applied online, never written a check, and got a elk and deer tag this year. I made a mistake on my apps last year, and they wouldn't let me fix the mistake. Why should they let the people who didn't read the directions correctly have another chance. Just think of the guy that would have gotten the tag that followed the directions correctly. I think I would be down there fighting this one if I thought I had a chance at that tag. David

    Jeep anyone?

Where can the jeep be seen? David
  18. Weren't we given like two months to get out apps in? I think that is plenty of time to get an app filled out and get your money order taken care of. I guess we can't protest this in any way. I bet there could even be a lawsuit filed if somebody really wanted to push the issue. David

It was great meeting you also. Thanks again for the water valve tool. I didn't find any leaks the whole weekend. David

    Rage 2 Blade broadhead

I have also used the Snyper which I think is the same as the Rage two blade. I have only used it for pig hunting so far. It did a great job, and almost cut the heart in half. I would not use it on an elk though. I think the expandables are great on deer sized animals or smaller. With an elk, there is larger bone that needs to be penetrated if you make a not perfect shot. I have had very good results using cut on contact fixed blades. Try pushing an expandable head, chisel point, and a cut on contact blade into a cardboard box to see how much effort it takes for each one. I use the Magnus Stinger four blade for my elk hunts.
