what type of tires do you guys run?
azhuntnut replied to fatfootdoc's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I put a set of Toyo open country mud terrrains on my Duramax a couple months ago and I think they are some of the best tires I have owned. They are ten ply and they have been wearing very well so far. I have tried them in the mud and they kick#&$. With the AC running, I can't even hear them while driving. I will be towing my fifth wheel this weekend and that will be the final test. I have owned about every other tire available, and I think the Toyos win hands down. David -
Preferred vegetation to hunt coues in?
azhuntnut replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I noticed in some of the pictures posted in the archery section, there were pine trees in the background. The unit I drew this year has pines to the north and then as you head south it turns into high desert(junipers, mesquite). Do the deer seem to move out of the pines when it starts to cool off and get into the junipers? Are they in the Junipers all year long? I have thought about trying to hunt them in the pines with my lever action just to make it more challenging. David -
On my camera, you can take a pic while the video is running. If yours can take a still picture, start the video and when it gets to the right spot, take a still picture and then download it from you SD card onto the computer. David

Christian, Have you gotten any pics of the bulls you have been watching? I have 17 days to go and I am starting to get pretty excited. I will be up there for the next two weekends looking for Mr. Big. I found another one just lately that looks to have some potential. I just need to seduce him into my unit. David

HAPPY BIRTHDAY...
azhuntnut replied to Apache7mm's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Thanks guys for all of the good wishes. I can honestly say I feel at least 40 with all of the injuries I have sustained. I guess I am going to have to look into some of that hair darking formula since my gray is starting to show. Now if I can just remember where I placed that 390 inch bull. David -
Call the game ranger in that unit. He should be able to tell you where his honey hole is located.

Lance, you shot a fine looking antelope. I have never seen a double prong before. I think you might need to crossover to the other side and get a PSE. I have heard they never miss there mark. Congrats, and I will see you in a month. David

I used to hunt down in that area about ten years ago, but haven't had the chance to get back down there. It was very good for varmit hunting at one time. I wouldn't mind coming down during the javelina hunt in January and help you out. David

I saw this picture on another website and thought I would post it here. It doesn't give specifics, except it was shot in ND. That sucker has some great mass. David

Darren, Did you know if the big non typical was in the group? I can't tell from the pics. David

Nikon buckmaster-93% light transmission, waterproof, shockproof, and fogproof. Plus they have a 25 year no fault warranty. I have three of the Burris scopes, and two of them have had some kind of foreign object show up inside of the scope. I think the glass is a little clearer and brighter on the Nikons. You might even be able to find last years model Monarch on sale online somewhere. They have 95% light transmission. David

I got up north to check out some of my cams. One of them is a new Moultrie Cabelas 5.0. I set it to take video and stills. One of my other cameras had the rope pulled on it so the camera would only face the ground. I was surprised at the foot traffic around the camera. Can anybody tell me what the guy is doing with the yellow rope. I got the other guy on video also, but just as he was entering the trees. This camera is pretty sensetive. I also took some pics while scouting this weekend. Most of the smaller bulls I saw this weekend were rubbed off. The big boys are still hanging on to theres. Some of the smaller bulls were knocking there horns together. I watched them rub jack pines like they were rubber. I also found two big boys. Hopefully they will be around when the season hits. David http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t189/gl...=MDGC0040-1.flv http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t189/gl...nt=MDGC0044.flv This guy showed up alot. He likes my new mixture. http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t189/gl...nt=MDGC0020.flv I got him on video twice and still. While checking out a small sip of water, this guy popped out of a crack. Anybody know what kind of snake? Saturday morning. 5x5 with some buddies. My first rub of the season. This area smelled like a cattle yard, but was filled with elk droppings.

Hunt off of highway 87 instead of the lake mary road side. I am seeing alot of bulls just off of the road between Happy Jack and East Clear Creek. You can also check out Jacks Canyon on the 87 side to get away from the Long Lake hunters. David

Hard horned and velvet bulls!
azhuntnut replied to Lance's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I can only cup up with about 32-35 inches of extra points. The mass measurements end after the royal, so there wouldn't be any extra on top. I think Lance has hit it pretty close with his original score. Since the points don't shoot out far from the main beam, he doesn't get a big outside spread. I would think he is about 340-350. He will be even bigger next year no matter what how much rain we get. David -

Lance, Have you or anybody seen this bull since June? I am curious to know if he grew out anymore than the June picture. I will up the ante to 10 six packs of your choice to have a look also. Get me excited everytime you post new ones. David -

This sure makes me nervous. I have five cameras out right now all around Flagstaff. One of them I forgot my cable and couldn't lock it up. Hopefully it will still be there when I check them this weekend. There are alot of people on this site that live in Flag, so hopefully somebody might recognize them. David -
Very nice bear. I have hunted that unit for the last couple years, but have never seen one that size. You should go with the full body mount. Its worth the extra money. David

Well I am going to get some Snuffer SS's and the Stinger Buzzcut and give them a test run. I have read that the buzzcuts fly just like the stingers, but leave more blood. I am going to test them some elk meat and see what happens. David

Has anybody had any first hand experience using the Magnus Snuffer SS broadhead? What type of bloodtrail did it leave? I had my mind made up to use the Stinger four blade again this year on my elk hunt, but I have been reading about bad blood trails with this head. My last elk only ran about fourty yards, so I didn't need to trail it. The arrow was still stuck in the elk, so no blood came out at all. It did an awesome job on the internals, but I am just afraid if I make a marginal shot I might not have a good blood trail. David http://www.magnusbroadheads.com/snufferss.html

Ron, Were you near the property? I have been hitting some of the roads around us, but haven't found anything yet. You hit jackpot on that outing. I helped Mark set up three cameras around both units last weekend along with some salt and sweet feed in a feeder. David

This past weekend I had the opportunity to join a friend of mine that won the Az game and fish big game raffle bear tag. He was contacted by a very nice gentlemen named Kevin Presmyk who runs Full Draw Guide Service. Kevin offered to take him out and run his dogs until we found a big bear. We started out Saturday morning around 5am, and hit a trail around 7am. The dogs took off on the trail while we hung back and listened. After a while, Kevin got out a tracking device got a good idea where the dogs ended up. They had been on a good trail, but had ran the wrong direction and ended up where the bear had beded that night. It took us a while to round up all of the dogs and by that time it was getting hot and the dogs needed a little rest. We all decided to start again early Sunday morning. Sunday was pretty slow. We drove around for about three hours before the dogs found anything. We were pretty close to a canyon when they took off back towards the forest instead of down into the canyon. We were all relieved that we would not have to go down into it. While waiting for the dogs to tree the bear, I decided to glass the canyon for a while. I hadn't even been glassing for a couple minutes when I spotted a little black bear at the very bottom of the canyon about a half mile away. We all agreed it was just a small bear and decided to go see what the dogs had found. It took us a while, but found the dogs a couple miles from where we let them off. Once again they had gone the wrong direction and ended at the bears bedding site. We all talked for a while and thought we should go back to the canyon and see if there was another bear hanging around. I went out on a point and started glassing the same area, but couldn't find any bears, but did see three nice bulls feeding. Kevin then decided to head down into the canyon with about ten dogs and try to tree the bear so we could get some pics. He had a few youngs dogs along and wanted to get them on a bear. My buddy Mark, who won the tag decided to stay up top since he is older and doesn't hike that much anymore, while myself and five other guys went down. The rest of the group got out ahead of me since I was just pokin along looking for sheds. When I was almost to the bottom, I could see the guys were going in the wrong direction. I turned them around to where I had seen the bear. When Kevin got with 50 yards of where I saw the bear, one of the other guys below me about 100 yards yelled out that there was a brown bear just ahead of a dog. It had a couple cubs with it. When the dogs hit the scent, they really started to sing. About ten seconds later he yelled "theres another bear". Of course all of the guys on the bottom of the canyon were yelling "where are they". They couldn't see around all of the brush. It got real exciting at this point, and I wanted to get a better view. I tried slabbing the side of the canyon, but it was very steep and starting to rain, making it very hard to stay on my feet. I finally made it to a better spot to see three dogs corner a bear across the canyon under a big rock. One dog got knocked around, but didn't get hurt. I watched for about ten minutes, and then they started calling the dogs off. It was now pouring rain, and you couldn't see very far. I decided to head back up to the top. Boy, I am still out of shape. When I met up with my friend Mark at the top, he asked me if I had seen all of the bears. I told him I had seen the two. He then proceeded to tell me that six bears had ran out of the same thicket, and were running up all sides of the canyon. There were four browns, one black, and a brown one that turned blond half way back. Apparently the blond one came up my side and crossed right above me. I heard a log role just above me, but didn't see the bear. He said they scattered just like Javelina getting spooked. Most of them were small, except the sow was pretty big. It took about an hour to get the rest of the guys and dogs out of the canyon. We called it a day at this point since the dogs were worn out and the rain was coming down pretty hard. It was a very exciting weekend and I don't think I will ever come across that many bears in one canyon again. I marked it on my GPS, so hopefully I can check it out again when the regular season starts in that unit. If anybody is looking for a great hunt behind dogs, Kevin was real nice and answered all of our stupid questions with a smile. He does lion and bears hunts. He is also guiding the bear auction tag buying this year. David

Lance, They were hitting the berries. The guys on the bottom said that all of the bears came out of the bushes when they got close. I had just glassed the bushes thirty minutes before, but couldn't see anything since it was so thick.

Had six bears and two cubs in one canyon this morning. I will give the whole story this week. David
