I acquired this TC Encore ealier in the year on a trade. It came with several barrels, and one of them was a 15 inch pistol barrel chambered in 7mm-08. I thought this would make a great caliber for my son who just turned ten. So I decided to build a lightweight rifle that would be great for hiking long distances. I took the barrel to Magnum Precision Gunsmithing and had him add one of his custom muzzlebrakes to help with recoil, and make the barrel the legal 16.25 inch length for a rifle. He also recrowns the barrel during the installation. I then added the new ProHunter FlexTech stock and forearm. I had the smith drill and tap the barrel so I could use a rifle length forearm. The stock is supposed to help reduce felt recoil by 43%. I figured the this stock and muzzlebreak it should be a low recoil rifle. I checked the trigger and it breaks clean at 3.8 pounds, so I didn't mess with it at all. I used a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 Mil-dot scope mounted with Talley one piece base. I figured since Casey and Jimmy can add engraving to there guns, then I should have the same pleasure. This is laser engraved, so hopefully it will hold up for a while. I am heading out next week to shoot it and see how it does with some Federal premuim 140 grain nosler ballistic tips. I know I will lose some velocity with the shorter barrel, but it will have less vibration than the longer barrels. I will most likely end up using this gun during my November WT hunt if its a shooter. Final weight with scope came in at 6.8 pounds. David

While you fellas and gals were out shooting toads, I got bored sitting in my stand so I got out and did a little walking. I hiked a couple miles back to a canyon to try glassing up a bear or coues. I found the shed in some thick hardwoods, but couldn't find the other side. The skull was about a quarter mile south of a pond. It still had ants working it over. I think it is from a muley, but I am not for sure. David

It was about an inch in a half towards the end, and then the barrel started getting hot and giving me some stringers. I also think the forearm was making a little contact on the right side of the barrel and frame. These TC's can be finicky until you get them figured out. David

I had a chance to go out to Ben Avery yesterday and break in the barrel a little. On the very first shot, I managed to blow a 44oz. drink off of the table from the muzzle blast. It was sitting about a foot to the left of the gun. I will be wearing some hearing protection for sure during my coues hunt when I take a shot. I still need to do a little more work on the inside of the forearm to tighten up the grouping. David

I just wanted to give a great report for Timney triggers. I recently built an AR with the drop in skeletonized trigger. On my first outing I noticed it had just a bit of creep in the trigger. I sent an email to them last Wednsday about getting the trigger serviced. I had an email back within ten minutes. They told me to send it back so they could take a look at it. I informed them I was in north Phx and asked if I could just come down to there facility. I got a reply back telling me to come on down. I set an appointment for the next morning. I brought my entire gun with me and Jay broke it down for me, pulled out the old trigger and installed a brand new one in a couple minutes. Now that my friends is great customer service. They will get my business for all my trigger needs from now on. David

Darren, Congrats to your buddy on the great bull. Those bulls are so hard to hunt and very smart. Is this the same bull that we were talking about last year? The vegetation looks to be the same where I hunted for him. Have you guys tried putting a tape on him for a final score? David

Factory ammo puts this caliber right at 2800 fps, so I figured this rifle will shoot close to 2300-2400fps. I plan on trying the Federal ammo first, but will also try the factory Hornady light magnum loads which add about 200 fps over regular loads. If that doesn't work for me than I will work up some loads using the new Reloader 17 powder, which has gotten very good reviews so far. David http://www.6mmbr.com/reloder17.html

which model of rifle do you prefer?
azhuntnut replied to devinv's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have owned three Browning Stainless stalkers with the Boss, and everyone of them have been tack drivers. Plus if you are a lefty, they have quite a few calibers to choose from. I have also read good things about some of the Savages and Tikka's. I have learned alot lately on this website by just reading through some of the articles and forums. This article will help explain parallax adjustment, and another one I found on another site. David http://www.6mmbr.com/parallax.html http://www.opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=5026&PN=1

I have the Monarch BDC on the top of my AR and was shooting an 8in rock at 350 yards on Sunday with no problem. Like the other poster mentioned, you just need to shoot your gun at the range to find out where it shoots. There are only a couple differences between the Monarch and Buckmaster. The Buckmaster has 92% light transmission compared to 95 witht he Monarch. You will not have the longer 4 inch eye relief that comes on the newer Monarchs either. But the Buckmaster is still waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof just like the Monarch. The best part is they both carry the no-fault warranty. David

Has anybody been out near the Horseshoe Lake area varmint hunting? I was thinking about running out there this weekend and do some calling on the way there and back behind the lake. Its been quite a while since I was last there and I don't know how the fire has affected the area. David

I currently have a high powered scope on my AR, but now I have been thinking about switching to the Eotech 512. Do any of you have one of these mounted on your AR? What do you prefer? David http://www.eotech-inc.com/product.php?id=9&cat=4

That sucker is a toad. Great job on finding a beautiful goat. Did you put a tape on him by any chance. I am terrible at scoring antelope. David

Christian, I went back and watched the video a couple times and paused it to get a more accurate score. Here is what I came up with. David spread 39.5 left 132 right 132 mass 22 22 total 154 154 347.5 gross After you guys shoot him, make sure you let us know what he scored. David

Tam, Are you using it out to a couple hundred yards? I like the new 557 model, but they have had some problems with it lately. So now I am considering the 512 model. I would like to eventually add the 3x magnifier. David http://www.eotech-inc.com/product.php?id=8&cat=1

He looks like he has good length in the main beam and on his upper end. I thing he would be close to the 340 mark. Its hard to tell how long the fronts are since he has good seconds and thirds. Good width also. I doubt he will have much in the deduction department though. David

Doug, Have you been happy with the results of the Nosler ballistic tips? I picked up four new boxes of the federal premium 140 for a smokin deal and wanted to use them on my coues hunt. I have also been looking into the Hornady light magnum 139 SST since the barrel on my gun is only about 16.50 inches. I figured I am loosing at least 200 fps with the shorter barrel. The experience I had with the sierra's was on a muley hunt some years ago. The only shot I had was a frontal. I would have to admit that the deer dropped dead in its tracks without even a kick or twitch. When I opened it up, the heart was gone, and the bullet had completely exploded. In my opinion, I think it was to much speed for the bullet. I am trying out some factory loads this year from Federal with the ballistic tips in my 7mm-08. I usually soak some phone books overnight and then take them out and shoot them to see how the bullet reacts. David

Jimmy, If you want to step down to 165's, my 300 really liked 72 grains of IMR 4350 with a 165 sierra boattail. I don't recommend using the boattails anymore due to them exploding once they enter the animal. I was pushing them right around 3250 per second. See if they might want to try the Hornady SST's. David

Do any of you have any experience with the Nikon dot sight VSD? I was thinking about adding one to my AR and wanted to hear some feedback on it. If you have one, what kind of range does it have? David http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/product.ph...mp;product=8430

I picked up a new digiscoping adapter from Cabelas last week and decided to give it a try tonight with the full moon. I am using a Nikon Coolpix 8.0 megapixel camera, and a Nikon 13-30x50mm ED angled body spotting scope. I set the scope on 30 power and barely zoomed in with the camera. The adapter is very easy to use and you are able to adjust it to fit your scope. Cabelas also has one to fit larger eyepiece spotting scopes. David

I sat a stand this past weekend for three days and also sat in it three seperate days before the weekend. Within that time, not one deer came into water. The area I was in has been getting lots of rain and I finally figured they were staying down in a canyon about three quarters of a mile from the pond I was on. I know this is a good pond based on some very good info passed along to me. There were elk hitting it during the night time, but nothing else during the day. I plan on setting up a camera after the elk season to see if they start to come back in after the rains stop. David

Ben, I sure hope you are getting excited for your hunt. That muley is going to turn out pretty good. You need to start putting some cables and locks on the cams just to keep others out. David
