I think he is real close to 365 gross and he wouldn't have that much on deductions. He sure is a nice lookin bull. I love those fronts. David

    Had a great elk hunt

I was lucky enough to once again draw an early bull archery tag. My plan was to shoot a bull I named "Whistler" that I had been watching for quite some time, but you know how that goes. I chased him, plus one other bull for most of the ten days I hunted. On the fifth day of my hunt I had a about a 360 bull come in and give me a 45 yard broadside shot only to have my shoulder dislocate half way into my draw. He noticed me tryin to get in back in and ran out to 60, but I was even able to get my bow back even an inch at this point. I have never had this happen to me in the 18 years I have been shooting a bow. I guess it wasn't meant to be. "Whistler" always seemed to keep some bulls between me and him and then disappear every morning. Finally on the 6th day of my hunt I found him beded up, but he didn't want to come to my calls. I found him at 9am and stayed with him until 3 when he moved to a ridge to some water. At one point I had a down hill 50 yard shot at him, but only had a 2 foot hole to shoot through and didn't want to take a chance and wound him so I let him walk. My little cubby hole I set up at the water. I spent over twenty hours waiting. Had my video camera set up to record the action, but he didn't come down the right trail. I proceded to sit this same body of water every evening and on the Sunday night he came down to drink, but the wind shifted and he was gone. I kept getting into bulls every morning passing on some really good ones just to shoot Whistler. Finally on Monday; the last night of my hunt, I called in a really nice bull to the water, but I couldn't get closer than 100 yards. While making my stalk, a bull bugled just to the left of me and scared off the bull. I made my move to get closer to him and when he gave me a broadside shot at 62 yards I let the carbon fly. The Stinger broadhead double lunged him and he only went about 15 yards and tipped over dead. I think it is the fastest I have ever seen a bull expire. He is a pretty old bull and on his way down. He only had one ivory left and tipped the scales at 410lbs. This was the 12th bull I had called into bow range during the hunt. My buddy that was hunting with me still hadn't had an opportunity to shoot a bull. It was his first archery hunt and I really wanted him to be successful. So on Tuesday morning we got back out there hoping the bulls would be ready for action, but all was quiet and we only heard 4 bugles by 6:50. I could tell he was really down, but made the decision to head back to the Ranger and get loaded up for the drive home. After we came down on the mountain I heard a faint bugle in the distance and could instanly tell that it was Whistler and he had a 5x5 that was running with him that I knew I could call in since I had already done it six times in the past week. We started running back up the mountain and got on top again and I started givin some cow calls and light bugles and he started our way. When he got a little closer I started to break some branches to let him know I was lookin for a fight. When he topped over the small ridge I let him get a good look at my Montana decoy and started to reel him in. I could see my buddy was at full draw and when the bull cleared the trees he smoked him at 13 yards with the Stinger broadheads also. The bull fell within 20 yards of us. He was so happy I think he might have even shed a tear or two. This was by far one of the most strenuous hunts I have had in a while, but it sure was a bunch of fun. I can't wait until next year to do it again. I will post a short video of Whistler once I get it downloaded. David

Way to go Jim. That is good lookin bull. All those hours of driving back and fourth really paid off for you. At least you hunt better than you play poker. David

Ron's 2010 AZ Archery Bull Elk

Looks like we have us another "outdoor writer". You wrote a great story Ron with some fine pictures to go along with it. I love the main beams on that bull. Its always nice to harvest a great animal after you put in a ton of time and effort. David

    Had a great elk hunt

Thanks for all the great comments, we really had a great time in the woods. As for the shoulder, my left one used to do it all the time and I would just role it back into the joint, but this was the first time the right one popped out that much. I think if it wasn't for being in such good physical condition, I doubt I could have continued, plus I am really hard headed and won't quit. I am going to go get it checked out next week. David

    Had a great elk hunt

Here is the video. I only have a short clip of him since I didn't want to pressure him since it was the day before my opener. This bull would only bugle with a high pitch whistle so I was always able to seperate him from the others. He did the same thing last year. Watch for the collared cow that comes out just before him. He sure would have looked good next to my other bull on the wall. David

    string makers

I have a new PSE bow madness that I want to get the strings replaced with custom strings before I get it set up. Can anybody recommend a dealer here in the state that I can use with a quick turn around, and quality workmanship? David

    a little elk action video

My buddy was able to get a little footage of me Sunday morning when the bulls got fired up for a couple hours. I am hunting one particular bull, so I passed on the smaller ones. I will post some footage of him I got on Thursday morning when my hunt is over. I had to come home for a couple days, but I am heading back up tomorrow evening for seven more days of action. David

    Outdoorsmans Rear Rifle Rest

If you guys can be patient, I will have a new type of rifle mounting system that works very well on the market soon. Coosefan will be trying one out as soon as the machinging is finished. I am working as quickly as possible to have it finished so it can be used on the upcoming deer hunts. David

    a quick buglin video

I got into a group of bulls this past weekend that were buglin pretty good. I actually filmed this bull for about fifteen minutes before my son got bored and wanted to move on to the next one. David

    Electric Skinner

I built something similar for hanging deer in the field. Mine goes a bit higher and comes out at the top like a hangmans bar. I also added a trailer swing out on the bottom to stop the hoist from sagging when it is weighed down. We have lifted some pretty heavy deer with it, and it saves a bunch of time while skinning. I will see it I have a pic somewhere. David
  14. I need to purchase a new Remington 700 soon. I recently found an SPS Tactical chambered in .308. Has anybody own one of these? If so, can you give me a little feedback on it. I have read that it is a good shooter out of the box, and weighs in at 7.5 pounds. David http://www.remington.com/products/firearms...s-tactical.aspx

    Remingtion SPS Tactical .308

I decided to pull the trigger on the SPS Tactical today. The deal was to good to pass up. I tried pretty hard to find the rifle the Buglethemin recommended, but it was on national backorder and I couldn't wait any longer. Cabelas had the gun on sale, plus a 40 dollar rebater. I am taking it out next week to break her in. David

    Elk Bugle

I use an old Primos bugler that is cut down to about five inches, and Primos dual reed mouth call {red}. I had good luck with the dual hot lips without the converter and the cowgirl in the past. I recently heard the Bull Hooker cow call from Hunter Specialties that sounded really good, and a little different from the others. David

    Bobcat mount has arrived

Amanda, That is his skull. When I first saw it I thought it was a great touch to the mount. I told Kevin I wanted him to look like he was just hangin out relaxing on a rock, as if he was half napping or sunning himself. David

    Bobcat mount has arrived

This is a bobcat I shot back in October. I think it turned out really good. Kevin Bean from Natural Creation Taxidermy did it for me. David

got a Nikon M223 rifle scope

These scopes can be used on any .223. You just need to use 55 grain bullets, or if you have a short barrel, then I would try 50. The M223 is different the Coyote. The M223 allows you to be more accurate by using the new BDC with slash marks every 50 yards. The coyote can be used with any caliber. If you are going to use the coyote, go onto Nikons website and use the Spot On program to find out where you bullet will land inside of the circles. It works very well and has several functions. Remingtion SPS Tactical .308

I forgot to mention that I cannot change out the stock or really do alot of work on the gun. It must stay in the stock form so when I do my testing with my products it will show I was using a factory gun. I am going to try it right out of the box and see what type of results I get using factory ammo. David

    Remingtion SPS Tactical .308

Over the years I have shortened my barrels on my guns, and haven't noticed a huge difference in velocity. It actually helps with vibration in the barrel. I plan on using it to kill animals, long range shooting, and a test bed for some of my product. I will most likely have the barrel threaded for a muzzlebrake, and do a little work on the inside of the stock to stiffen it up a bit. I haven't really read to many bad things about it, plus it looks bada$$. I have a 16in. barreled .223 that shoots lights out at long range, so I don't think the 20 would be to bad for the .308. I was hoping somebody could give me real world feedback on it though. David

    Private land

Private property must be marked every 1/4 mile with a sign or a stick with the top portion painted red. Don't always trust what a game and fish officer tells you, they are wrong sometimes. I even corrected one this past year after I read through the regs. He was very happy for letting him know. And you can't enter private property if your buddies, cousin, friend with the red truck that used to hunt there ten years ago gave you permission. David

Myself and my son both drew some 41 tags and he also drew one of the junior javelina tags in 39 during November. Gonna be his first hunt for deer, so I can hardly wait. David
