Years ago I was at Casey's in Flagstaff dropping off some bulls when a guy drove up with a bull in the back of his truck. He told Casey he had shot the bull the night before and had retrieved it at daybreak. Right away Casey told him the meat was probably already bad and proceeded to stick a long bladed knife into the neck meat and made a quick ten inch cut. The rotten smell instantly hit everyone that was standing in the area. He made it pretty clear that it is important to do your best to try and retrieve elk if at all possible. I carry several flashlights and a UV light for tracking blood at night. The blood you find close to the shot should determine if tracking should be immediate or not. David

I also found a new box of Hornady .270 win 140 btsp light mag. I would trade for some 95 grain .243 ammo. David

I had one run across the road in front of me in the north valley at eight in the morning the other day. I rolled up where he crossed and he was walking out into the desert. All I did was roll the window down and start mouth squeaking at him. He turned and started walking back towards me. I also gave him a light howl and he came even closer to investigate. At one point he was only 12 yards away. I would say it is a great time to start huntin for them now. David

Rifle Build 7mm WSM (updated completed with pics)

Here is the article. David http://www.nraila.org/hunting/issues-and-alerts/2012/3/one-arizona-hunting-bill-signed-by-governor,-another-up-for-a-vote-in-senate.aspx -
I have been told by several wardens that in order to not be considered pursuing game with a vehicle, you need to exit your vehicle and attempt to pursue the game. So basically you would need to walk towards the game and get away from the truck. This law can be used against you in most any situation while hunting. You could actually be driving to your hunting area and see an animal that you want to shoot. Just stop the truck, shut it off and walk away from it and this is legal hunting as long you are off the road. I would also recommend that you are careful with any conversation you have with a warden. They listen very well to everything you tell them. David

Rifle Build 7mm WSM (updated completed with pics)

Devan, you can now use magazines that hold more than five rounds for hunting in AZ if that is your concern. I saw a company somewhere on the net that build custom aluminum magazines with the front cut out so you can load VLD's. I can 't find them right now. Are you going to change out the stock? I picked up a .243 for my son and was looking for a better stock for it. David -
I recently bought a new pair of the meindl's, but just couldn't them broke in. I figured my boots might be the main issue with my feet getting messed up. I have been wearing the danner pronghorns for the past 7 years, but I noticed there quality has gone down hill. So today I stopped into an REI and tried a pair of Soloman Quest GTX's and they felt great. I walked all over the store and the rock pile. Tried kneeling down in different positions and just couldn't find anything bad about them. So I will be adding these to my collection. I saw these socks online and wondered if anybody has ever used them? Steven, I bought a 99 grand vitara last June and it has been my best hunting rig yet. I have already put 20k on it. I put a small lift on it and it came with a factory air locker up front. It goes anywhere I point it. I just recently sold my ranger since I never used it anymore. Mine is a 99 with the 2.5 v-6 auto with all the options, including leather. Powertrax makes a limited slip you can put in he rear, but it will only works on the 99 model. I have some BFG KM2's going on it next week for the upcoming elk seasons, but I have been running the BFG at's with no issues. One of the great things about the rig is that it is so quiet that you are able to drive into your hunting area undetected. Plus you stay warm and dry. If the motor stopped tomorrow, I would buy another one in a heartbeat. David -
Forget the pears. Just find a dead cow and the bears will show up. There are usually several dead around the Arsenic Ranch area. Try calling around Dry Lake. David

SOLD on CL. This winch doesn't need any power and you can store it in your truck. I have used it one time and it was able to pull a full size k5 blazer with no problem. You could even use it to winch an animal up into a tree. Check out the link for more info. $250 obo. David http://www.4x4wire.c...views/eopwinch/

I thought it was worth at least $350.00. Shoot me. Pm if you have something. David

Tracy, your well written story was absolutely riveting. I can hardly wait until you post your story about your turkey hunt. Congratulations Angie for taking another great trophy. David

I thought I read on here before that somebody built a custom rifle in this caliber. If so, can you give me your feedback on it. Do you like the caliber? Is it difficult to size your brass? What kind of velocity are you getting out of it? David

6TH ANNUAL CWT.com MARSHALL LAKE GET-TOGETHER
azhuntnut replied to Lance's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
Can we try to set up a bit further back in this year where the trees are a little thicker for more shade. We have set up there in the past. David -
I started using the Montana Decoy years ago during the elk hunts with great success. I had a cow come within 20 feet of me and started to circle me while I also pivoted to keep the decoy facing her. I noticed the bulls will come in for a closer look and it usually takes there eye off of the shooter. It works best when you have a friend helping you. David

I will be there again this year. Make sure you bring your bows. We usually have a friendly competition shoot. David -
Before you spend a bunch more money, find a discount tire that has a Road Force balancing machine. This machine will be able to tell if you have a bad tire, which is usually the problem when a death wobble occurs. A regular balancing machine will not pick up the problem. A road force machine actually has an arm that comes down and makes contact with the tire while it is spinning on the machine. Plus they mount an additional adaptor to the wheel in order for it to fit the machine perfectly. This will duplicate how the tire performs as if it was actually driving on the road. It will also tell them the best position to mount the tire on the rim, or tell them if the tire is actually "bad". It is usually not covered under manufacture warranty unless it is really bad. I have experienced this same issue with some of my lifted trucks in the past and in some cases it was a bad tire. Hope this helps. David

I recently completed my antelope pedistal from my 2011 archery season. The taxidermy work was done by TR Taxidermy in Flagstaff. During the mounting phase, I had him insert a tube inside of the mount so it would allow me to spin it on the pedistal to whatever position I wanted. Now I really was hoping to tackle the pedistal on my own, but soon realized I was in over my head. So I got a hold of Tracy (Gr8 White Jr) here on the site and we put our heads together and came up with an idea. I found the wood in the forest outside of Flagstaff and thought it would look great. Tracy puts his professional skills to work and was able to put everything together without showing any cut marks on the aged wood. I wanted it to look like it was built 100 years ago with no machines. We spent 12 hours working on it, but 2 of those were telling huntin stories. It weighed about 130lbs when we finished. Thanks again Tracy. I decided to take a crack at building the habitat on my own. This was my first attempt at building a habitat and I really enjoyed it. It is alot harder than it looks, and now I see why taxidermists take a while to get mounts finished. I put at least 6 hours into making it look like the habitat where I shot my antelope near Flagstaff. I am very happy with the way it turned out. David Here are some pics from the Arizona Bowhunters Association Banquet this past Saturday.

Arizona Bowhunters Association Banquet
azhuntnut replied to darrcolburn's topic in Conservation Group Events
I will be there with the wife and boys for sure. This is a great banquet with some nice prizes. If you have kids, bring them along. I hope to have my antelope mount finished and on display at the banquet. David -
I have been using vanilla extract for years now and it will stop just about everything. Plus the deer will come to investigate the smell. You can sometimes find the huge bottles at the discount stores. David
