19 BP,s might get you a good antelope tag. Put in for what you want, dont settle. As far as 6BP for archery elk, good luck with that... Ron Yeah Ron, I am only putting in for premium antelope hunts that I think I can really spend a lot of time scouting. The archery elk draw with 6 BPs is really a crap shoot, but somebody's got to draw. Good luck to you in the draws. Lee 6 bps should get you a tag as long as your not puting in for 9,10,3a 3c, 1, or 27. WTH, were you looking over my shoulder? I am considering some of those units but I am also only going to apply for early archery bull. That makes it a crap shoot. I could easily get drawn for a late season archery bull with 6 BPs I think but that's not the hunt I want. Lee Check the moon phase on the late hunts before applying - The bulls are almost completely nocturnal when there is a full moon....

The hound hunters won't shoot small/young lions in these areas even when there are multiple bag limits in effect! I would like to here if the new night hunting with lights has any success!

The G&F are not doing the thinking on this ... It's the same old story the politicians created this! This was started during Napolitano's rein.... Janet and her cronies viewed our hunting as a resource to pay off the states debts so they they started sweeping all of the leftover $$$ from the G&F into their general fund....They also increased tags & the cost of lic and tags drastically to create more revenue to sweep! Jan Brewer is continuing the practice! The sportsmen of Az should be outraged that the extra $$$$$ they are taxed on hunting and fishing gear is also being swept the general fund . When the sportsmen agreed & voted in these taxes it was under the condition the funds remain in the AZGFD & or approved conservation programs! Within the next 5 years a reident Elk tag will cost over $200 dollars.....

I have been calling since I was 14 next month I will turn 57 - Calling coyotes has been better , I can't say if it's the drought or that they are more educated but I can say the calling gets better the further from large metropolitan areas and that goes for all the predators! 20 years ago we would score on a coyote or two just standing out in the fields or mesa's in between stands...This dosn't happen much anymore! I just think there are too many green horns with electronic callers out educating the yotes!!!!! -
This week in the news physicist's claim to be on the verge of proving that the "God Particle" exist! I predict they will find it located right next to a JACKWAGON PARTICLE!

Stick with your day job, sell your hounds and mules they are too fat to hunt you probably are too! Please stay in Colorado we don't want any more illegals here! azhuntnut - Good for you great cat! PS... Learn how tow take a picture without out the blood & guts hanging out....!

If lions are not a predation problem then why did the G&F just make it legal to hunt them at night with lights? For several years now there has been multiple bag limit units that permit hunter's to shoot a lion per day until the unit quotas are met! These quotas are never met! The combination of drought and too many lions = diminishing sheep/deer populations..... We can't do much about the weather/drought so the logical answer is to thin out the lion population.... It sounds to me that you are against shooting young/small lions because they make more of a trophy when they grow older & larger by eating our deer and sheep! I want to know why none of the quotas in the multiple bag units are ever met?????? Is it all the big bad hound hunters out there turning loose small cats because they want them to get bigger by eating the sheep and deer! The reason why they have the multiple bag limits is to encourage the hunters to shoot lions big or small and be able to get after them the next day! The hound hunters ain't been getting it done so the G&F now allows night hunting with lights - I guarantee you that when I call in a Mt Lion day or night I won't be judging it's size before pulling the trigger.... As long as it doesn't have spots or kittens its gonna get skinned! I am not against hounds hunting and I have done it , shooting a scared cat up a tree with a pack of hounds squawking was fun and expensive$$$$ I have also called and killed several lions - I prefer the calling method it just seems more natural to see a big cat come slinking in to make a kill and then surprise it with a a lead sandwich! Hey aRt - Don't give up that day job I don't think you can cut it as a professional lion hunter!

Very well done. Thank You!! I suppose a lion hunter cruising the back roads looking for a fresh lion track could be considered road hunting ! Like to see this one go to court... Like it was stated most of these citations can be beat in court if you choose to fight them. I fought a citation for hunting after dark and won...I sat in my tree stand waiting for my buddy to pick me up for about 1 hour after dark , the only light I had was a pen light and a glow stick stowed in my pack! Now it is literally impossible to hold a pen light and draw a bow, aim and shoot ... Dumb a$$ WM wrote the ticket any how!!!!! Beat it in court eeeeezy ........ I believe the judge's last word on this was "Why is this in my court?" That WM no longer works for AZGFD! He made a practice of writing citations that were frivolous .....

Very informative, and confusing me at the same time. So, lets make a model. Worst case scenario first: Unit "X" has 15 bucks and 100 does. G&F issues a total of 20 tags for bucks only. Hunters harvest 10 bucks, and 10 tags go unfilled. That means there are still 100 does, but only 5 bucks left to do the breeding- and that only reflects hunter-harvested deer. Those remaining 5 bucks are the unit's only hope in furthering the herd and are still affected by the droughts, predation, habitat loss, and the list goes on. Can a single buck successfully breed 20 or more does? Maybe, he'd have to be a stud though- and the chase would nearly kill him. So the current model of 10-20 bucks per 100 doe looks pretty bleak in my eyes. My idea would be this: Unit "X" has 15 bucks and 100 does. G&F issues a total of 20 tags for either-sex deer. Hunters harvest 5 bucks and 15 does. That leaves 10 bucks to breed the remaining 85 does. All of the same attrition factors come into play like the worst case scenario above- but now you have more bucks to help breed all of the does. Even if you lose a buck or two to predation, there's still more out there than the current model. If all of the tags got filled by hunters taking bucks and the last 5 tags with does, you're still in the same boat. From that letter linked above in Forkhorn's post- I would have to support the 20-30 buck to 100 doe ratio (or higher), AND have a limited doe harvest because it seems like keeping the buck numbers so low and the tag numbers high just invites the possibility of reduced breeding and non-breeding to occur in certain areas. Now I know that not all the antlerless deer are female and some button bucks might breed a doe or two- but you get what I'm saying? 20% buck to doe ratios are just risky in my opinion. -AND- How in the world does managing for less bucks and issuing more tags make any bit of sense to anyone??? Someone please educate me because it seems like I'm way off in left field on that one Sounds like the remaining bucks need a shot of viagra to get the job done!

Night hunting for lions with shotguns shooting buck shot!
gearsnagger posted a topic in Mountain Lion
NIGHT HUNTING LIONS On December 2, 2011, the Commission adopted changes to Lawful Methods of Take (R12-4-304) that allows for the take of mountain lions and coyote with the aid of an artificial light. Within that rule, additional changes were adopted to allow the use of shotgun shooting shot to take mountain lions, and allow pneumatic weapons to take quail and Eurasian Collared dove. These changes were posted with the Secretary of State’s office on Friday, and they became effective immediately. Later that same day, the Commission also approved amendments to Commission Orders 10 and 13 to implement hunts that would allow the use of artificial light. Essentially, the Commission approved multiple bag units for mountain lion in Units 6AS, 13BS, 15BW, 15C, 15D, 16AS, 18BS, 22S, 31, 32, 37B, 40A, 42S, and 44AE with daylong (midnight to midnight) shooting hours for a general season. That season is valid through June 30, 2012. These are designed to benefit bighorn sheep. -
I admit I am guilty of shooting coyotes from the truck , from the road , across a road (even a paved one) at a NF Campground and even in the city with a firearm..... Haven't got caught yet (knock on wood).... I hope the statute of limitations is up for these violations...... It's been a few years & I changed my ways , turned over a new leaf and got rid of old behaviors!

Try patterning it @ 40 yards with a cylinder choke and then compare it to that full choke.... You will notice a big difference! I would rather have a dense pattern it increases the effective kill range.. I do shoot at running coyotes (that's why I use a shotgun) and have killed many runners out past 50 yards with #4 buck if I was only going to take standing shots like a turkey hunter I would use a rifle. I work too hard and spend many hours calling to limit my shooting to critters standing still & flat footed within shotgun range or to loose one because I havn't bothered to pattern my shotgun and swap out the chokes to accommodate the shot I am using! -

Get rid of the full choke if you are shooting anything larger than BB - Chokes cause flat spots on the larger shot causing flyers and reduced pattern density.... Balistic fact! Chokes are designed for bird hunting to increase pattern density when using the smaller sized bird shot - # 4 buck shot is a good all around shot size for predators! Now that it is legal to shoot Mt Lions with buck shot I would not bother with the bird shot and stick with #4 Buck shot! Understand that #4 bird shot is not the same as #4 Buck shot!!!!!! -
Hey Jackwagon - This ain't Canada we have the 2nd amendment here....We made sure of that when we kicked all the king's men out of the Colonies... Quite a few of them tucked tail and headed for Canada. You can't even have a pistol or assault rifle in Canada let alone have a loaded weapon in your vehicle!
-
I believe the 2nd Amendment needs to be considered ! I carry a .45 1911 Colt in my vehicle – Loaded and chambered…. Now I would love to have a Game an Fish officer cite me for road hunting based on his “interpretation” of why I have a loaded firearm in my vehicle! This would be a civil rights violation! $Love to take that to court$$$$$$! There used to be 2 closed hunts in Arizona – To prevent buddy hunting the AZGFD permitted only tag holders to have centerfire rifles/firearms in the field. This was found to be an infringement of the 2nd amendment…. The national forest is public domain and all civil rights are in effect on these public lands…. I was out calling predators during one of these closed hunts and I was using a shotgun shooting shot which was permitted as per the regulations then... A game warden happened by and checked our license’s and asked if I had any rifles in my truck, we had 2 rifles cased in the cab and he started to write the ticket for having rifles during a closed hunt… stating that he would be confiscating our weapons.... As he was writing I asked him if it was legal to shoot coyotes from the truck – He said no … Then I asked him where the “field” begins… He said that that was up to his interpretation…… He stopped writing the ticket and gave us back our licenses ….As a citizen it is my right to "Question Authority" Some of the game officers let their "authority" go to their head especially the new ones! What about quad hunters/riders riding around with their weapons mounted on the front of the quad – Easily accessible with the flip of the hold down strap…. How is this more acceptable than having a loaded weapon in the cab of your truck! "Road Hunting" is a subjective topic with many variables that could be "interpreted" this way or that....The quad patrol has defended their right to ride around with their bows and guns on several posts on this forum! “Method of take” – Again we are defining “take” does this mean actually “harvesting” or intent to “kill” something…. I suppose the a$$ h0le that “takes” your game camera is actually “harvesting” electronic equipment…… As for someone pointing a gun at me (not actually shooting) I would probably “interpret” this as a threat to my life…… Time to get busy defending your self ! If I had some jackwagon flinging lead in my direction with a deer rifle 200 yards away I would get busy with my weapon and there would be one less tag applicant in 2012! By the way KevinH you do have the right to defend your self! Did you have a weapon with you? Were you issued a man card? At the least I would have shot the tires off jackwagons Dodge Ram!
