San Carlos JAN lottery results
jlhcoues replied to Apache7mm's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Its been a really good run on the rez, hunted every unit and killed a buck every year for the last 14 . I want to thank the tribe for offering such a great hunt opportunity for us . I recall the smallest buck I killed was 102 if I remember right and the biggest was 116. My brother has hunted 16 years, he has killed 122,119 and several 105 to 110s. No tag for this next season but hopefully some other time. Thanks again -
Dan, the coues shed you have posted looks like the one I have on my wall. I killed that deer a few years ago on the res. Country looks exactly like where I took him.

Just womdering if anyone has ever hunted maylay gap on the res for archery elk and if you did how did ya do? jlhcoues

Im headed to the rez, when I get back Ill take a picture of my wall, and see what ya think. I hope I have another one to add to my collection, last years was 113, I was in the contest there should be some pictures in that thread. Then I think there is one or two in the photos of san carlos, one that went 109, barely missed. see ya in a couple weeks jlhcoues

Some of you guys are pretty hard on the game and fish. Ive hunted san carlos for many years now , ten to be exact and i have took 6 BC bucks. never have I had a conflict with the department. Yea I have had to waite in the lines for hours and yea I have not known when the tags go on sale or how much they are, but so what I love to hunt. I have also met some pretty good guys and had some great discussions in these lines. Its not the departments fault on these matters it is the board. If you dont want to go through the process then. dont complain about it,and calling anyone a maggot just shows me what kind of so called hunters some of you are jlhcoues

Way to go sonny boy. I better brag on you a little bit. This is 4pt 3rd or fourth coues that will go well over 100 inches with his bow and he has 3, I think that has topped 100 with his rifle! welcome to the sight, and keep it up. jlhcoues -
I asked Ray how close he was to that elk and he said it was so thick when he felt the elk hair he thought he had better draw. Hey lark how is you dad doing,I havnt seen him for awhile, he was the best ditch boss I ever had. We used to share all of our secrets on unit 28. jlhcoues

Me and my brother just returned from san carlos and we took a couple of nice bucks. I only hunted 4 days before I killed my buck and I saw 22 bucks, 5 of those were 100 inch class bucks.

Ive seen alot of bucks with the spots people usually call them pinto bucks, they are fairly common jlhcoues

Daryl, costs are1000 for nov, 1500 for jan, 2500 for d east and west. dont worry about the R100 you can kill just as good as bucks in the other units for alot less money. All of the 2007 jan hunts are sold out A<B<C, alot of the nov tags are left and the jan D tags. jlhcoues

Thought I would give you guys a litlle insight on our san carlos hunt this year. We did our usual ting that we do every jan. and go waite in line at scgf dept for 10 hours and we were lucky enough to snag a couple of unit B tags for 2006 before all the guides gobbled them up. We hunted the unit the nov 2004 and thought it would be a great jan hunt thinking the bucks would be rutting hard, little did we know, this jan was like summer time. Luckily my two sons Shane and Josh had the nov tags 2005, they passed on some helpful info to us. Day one I had my son Shane hunting with me in some areas he had hunted in nov. the day started pretty slow until about 10 or so. We ended up spoting 8 bucks in the area but none that I relly wanted. That afternoon we went into a areas that I figured not many people would want to hunt and glassed up a 100 inch buck but it was to late for a stalk. We talked about the area and Shane said he had found a spring in nov. that wasnt on the map and the deer were hitting hard, so I decided to check it out the next day. Day two I located the spring and he was right they had tore this place up, I began glassing and it wasnt long I began to spot deer. I had spotted 9 bucks befor I spoted the buck I wanted to take. Being late in the day I backed off and decided to come back for this buck. Day three I went with my brother into some new area that we wanted to check out, wasnt to productive for deer but we found some great tanks full of bass. Day four began with me back at the spring glassing for my buck. It didnt take long before I had him located, but he was across a huge canyon that took me until 10 to get across and set up to find him again. I coulnt find him at all but I spotted the two bucks that was with him laying in a cholla thicket so I decided to waite him out, hoping that he would come back on the mesa and feed. Finally around 4:30 he showed up, he began feeding towards me at a slow pace, I was getting worried about the time I had left before dark. Around 5:15 I had marked a cholla that he was feeding in at 327 yards and boom he was mine. The buck scored 111 gross and had a first mass measurement of 5 inches! I told my brother about this spring and that he should go check it out, dang if he didnt. He shot his from the road... 119!!!! jlhcoues john howard

quailchaser, I have stood in line for several years at san carlos and most of the time I have stood there from about 4 in the morning until 4in the afternoon The guides get there 2 or 3 days ahead of time and put out chairs to hold their places . They also buy several tags for people that gives them money ahead of time, each one can only buy one extra so they bring all there sons cousins or friends, and it takes forever to issue the tags, they are all hand written. Ive seen alot of fights and arguements over places in line it gets pretty wild . you just gotta be patient and bring lots of coffee jlhcoues
