FOC = Forward Of Center...It's the balance point of your arrow

Shot rabbits and such but this was my first "big game" animal...This is way back when...When you could buy state wide tags over the counter...woke up one day and told my Dad I was going hunting...He laughed shook his head and said be careful and be back before dinner...He didn't want to go because it was raining...So strapped my bow to my bike and headed out into the wilds of 43rd Ave and Happy Valley (it used to be wild)...Hiked up the ridge where Sandra Day O'Connor sits and as soon as I got to the top I saw fresh tracks and rooting...I remember smelling them before I saw them...I was 4' nothing and could barely see over the burr sage and brittle bush...Then I could hear them...Then there they were ...musta been like 10 yards...Who knows I didn't have range finder, sight, releases, none of fancy stuff...just a bare bow with some assorted 1816s with some Zwickey broad heads...I don't remember much about the shot...but I do remember that pig poking his head out from behind the brush...then he just fell over...Then I remember running off the mountain and ridding my bike as fast as I could home to tell my Dad I got one..."WHAT?" I think I woke him up from his nap he didn't believe me but I insisted I needed his help out for a pack out...That was my first successful solo hunt...Think I was 12...23 years ago...Time does fly...

And besides...It's fun!

Him having an 80 lb draw was the only logical explanation...you should have just assumed that.Im just wondering why he is shooting what he does....maybe hunts africa once in a while? Because I can...
-
Maybe this will help solve the mystey...

Actually I have...assuming the grain scale is right, chrono is right, weight scale is right, and calculator is right... keep bumping up the draw weight til you get to 250fps and I'll tell you if you are close...it's fairly easy to get a high KE...the high MOMENTUM value is what I was trying to achieve

HAS THE TIME COME?? WOLVES BEING RELEASED IN PRESCOTT AREA??
JACK replied to a topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
They have made their way into 23... -
Why didn't I think of that? Ok I did it...and threw the MOMENTUM calculation in just for fun Old set up...385 grains @ 315fps = 84.81 KE and 53.85 MO Current set up...682 grains @ 250fps = 94.63 KE and 75.70 MO Now what?
-
You know when you add weight to the front of your arrow it weakens the spine...There is a little more to it than just changing tip weight... Currently shooting VAP 250s...682 grains @ 24% FOC

I did the same thing the other day...Wish I would've listened to Dad when he told me to keep a journal and write a story after each hunt. The years go by fast thats for sure! Congrats on the success...Great post!

whats the coolest thing (or animal) you have caught on a trail camera?

Flash flood... Kind of a funny one... -
First got a picture of this buck in 2011...Pictures on the left are from 2012 and the right are from 2014...Check out the dates and times they are correct! I'd guess this buck was at least 3 in 2011...He is getting some age on him!...Be curious to see how he finishes out! looks like he may have something going in with his right hind leg...In the past he has quit using this seep once the monsoons start...So hopefully we can keep an eye on him...somebody has a December tag
-
Yeah...he could use some corn eh?

Scent smoking your clothes and gear...Seems pretty popular back east anyone every tried it out here?...on purpose...
-
Me too...Late WT
-
I dont think there is anyway to be scent free...gotta smell like something...
-
I agree its all about the wind...but apparently there is something about hardwood smoke that kills human scent and the smoke smell doesn't bother animals...not sure if smelling like a campfire is good or not...just wondering if anyone has experiences with doing it intentionally

mechanical broadheads success and failures
JACK replied to creed_az_88's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Let's just say you happen to hit a bone...This is what happened to me...Broadhead failure IMO...bent from tip to tip blades are locked in place...I was shooting a 385 grain arrow at 315fps. I hear a lot of guys saying you need a heavier arrow for expandables...So Is putting more MO and KE behind these heads going to make them stronger? After this and after testing several others at home...Never again will I use any kind of expandable...or light "fast" arrows -
I have a 5 pin CBE Tek Hybrid I'd make you a deal on if you're interested...

Congats on the tag!! How many points did you have?

Interesting article from the Alaskan bowhunting site...Physics or Myth? Tissue Resistance to Arrow Penetration Fact: The greater your arrow speed, the greater the resistance to penetration. Speed in and of itself isn’t bad. Opting for speed at all costs, well, comes at a cost. Here’s one of them. When any object moves through another the object being moved through resists the forward momentum of the other. A good illustration of this is how the wind resists your hand if you put it out the window of a moving vehicle. The faster the vehicle moves, the more the air resists your hand. There is a formula for determining the degree of resistance various substances have to an object attempting to pass through them. It’s officially called the “Force of Drag” but we generally hear it referred to as wind resistance, or water resistance. This force of drag applies to other mediums as well like animal tissue, including hair, hide, flesh and bone. The actual formula states: is the “force of drag” is the density of the substance being penetrated is the speed of the object relative to the substance being penetrated is the reference area. is the drag coefficient of the moving object. (e.g. 0.25 to 0.45 for a car) That’s a complex formula but here’s what it means to arrow penetration: The faster an arrow is moving the more resistance there is to it. (Even in the air.) Because the velocity is squared in the formula, the resistance increases tremendously as the arrow speed increases. If you double the speed of the arrow, the resistance factor increases by four. (2 x 2 = 4, velocity squared.) Here’s where it gets scary. If the arrow speed increases by a factor of four, then the resistance factor increases by 16 times! (4 x 4 =16, velocity squared) What does that mean to bowhunters? It means an arrow traveling at 150 feet per second is met with four times less resistance to penetration than an arrow traveling at 300 feet per second. Another way to say it is; an arrow traveling at 300 fps has to overcome four times the amount of resistance to penetration than an arrow traveling at 150 fps. The cold hard truth is.... When it comes to penetration, light fast arrows lose the momentum/kinetic energy battle AND when they reach the animal they have to overcome as much as four times the resistance to penetration as slower moving, heavy arrows do. If you're goal is to gain kinetic energy on paper by shooting lighter arrows faster, science proves it's a lose-lose proposition. First, you LOSE velocity twice as fast as momentum AND you LOSE penetration potential in what energy you do have left because the medium you're trying to penetrate is resisting that penetration four times more than if you were moving half as fast.
