Some pics from the month of June

Forget the stinky elk that Deer has Some POTENTIAL!!! Looks Heavy and sprouting some equally heavy eye guards!
  2. YOU ARE ALREADY REQUIRED TO REPORT YOUR ARCHERY HARVEST PG 42 of the regs, unless you have a draw tag. Coach, I would agree the mule deer herds up there in those regions seems to be doing well. My general assumption though is it is NOT management related. It is due to the monster fires up there. To me it appears we need some sort of natural disaster in order to get mule deer numbers up. I attended a Mule Deer Foundation banquet up there and a Game Warden gave a presentation on mule deer numbers. This was I believe a year or two after the Rodeo fire. All the surrounding units in the region had low numbers and the general trend of them all was going even lower, except for those 3 units that had that fire. As far as 13a and 13b go that is one special place. However you have to remember it was not that long ago when it was over the counter. Back then nobody, or hardly anybody ever thought about going up there archery hunting. This is a total different topic but there are certain units that I agree should be classified as TROPHY units, not only for deer but sheep, and perhaps elk as well. azgutpile, I also like the current system. But there are more and more examples where that is getting shut down. Example 34a december archery deer. Unit 1 went to the draw then went back, 3a and 3c is a draw tag for archery. I think some of you are also misunderstanding some of the objective here. It is not so to say lock down an exact number on the deer harvest. Or trying to get a specifics like are necessary for bears. I am saying if these units are having such a high archery success that they want to shut them down or make it a draw to limit archery hunters success, why not implement a quota system similar to what they have in place for bears??? Let everyone still have an opportunity to hunt the unit until a quota gets met.
  3. I would agree with your statement on the bear female harvest being more important and the correlations or lack of to male only harvesting in the deer, elk etc. populations. However, the last couple years from what I have seen with Game and Fish and game wardens I have talked with is they have been basing changing units over to draw tags on a certain success ratio. Unit 1 archery deer as an example. Obviously they have a percentage they are looking at. That could easily be changed into the actual number of bucks they want harvested correct? From what I understand is one person checks the automated phone calls on the bear harvesting, puts the tallies on a dry erase board, when quota is met they change the message on the phone. Does not seem like that outrageous of a work load, and would keep a ton more hunters happy that they could hunt any unit they want until the quota is met VS closing hunts VS having to draw tags. Again just my 2 cents, mulling over this idea
  4. Bill, I think the buck, SCI or total gross, is 239. Its frame grosses around 218 I and I believe he would most likely net somewhere down towards 190. Might not make the all time book. In this case you could say, as lots of people do....."NETS ARE FOR FISHING!" HAHAHA

    Bighorn Guide

Talking Desert Sheep Only. The original discussion was about outfitters. My stats were based on rams taken by outfitters. I was also going off what Game and Fish has posted for scores....First Two were Double H, the third ram I was told was DIY (which does not count if you are talking about outfitters). Forth ram was taken with Double H. Thus you have the top three for Double H if you are basing your conversation on outfitter statistics alone. If Mr. Wright was guiding, than no they have the top two (My apologies), and number 4 by Game and Fish's postings. We can really get nitty gritty here because I know that The number 4 ram also officially BandC measured bigger then what Game and Fish has posted. But Again I was going by GandF posted scores. Did not by any means look for some fight just was raising points to Double H's Record. I did some digging just for myself and found posted on LHO and SWA website they have posted their top rams since 2006. There are three 2011 scores of sheep they harvested with Mr. Bunches Ram on top, then Mr. Rogers, then Mr. Rufer. So I don't see how there could be an LHO hunter, a SWA Hunter, A DIY, And Three Double H??? So I have it 188 Double H 182 Double H 179 DIY SELF GUIDED 178 Double H 177 LHO According to GandF measurements.

Since this popped up again. If you are serious about big sheep and do your RESEARCH, you will want to check out Double H Outfitters, Chris Harlow and Tyson Hatch. They have an awesome record. Three Years in a ROW they have taken the largest sheep in the state!!! For 2011 they have taken the top 3 rams!!!!!! If you want to hunt with people serious about sheep and serious about the BIGGEST sheep possible give them a call!

    Sunrise Lake

Yes you need a Res fishing permit. I usually pick mine up at the Gas station in front of Honda Casino. You can get them at Western Drug in Springerville. You also used to be able to get them at some of the gas stations in Show Low but I haven't checked any of them in a long while. Heading up from Tucson it was always easiest to get them right there at Honda.
  9. Any of you rifle nuts interested in a Christensen Arms carbon fiber barreled rifle. Its the Carbon One Hunter in a 300 ultra mag, I have a load worked up that will shoot a one inch group at 200 yards. Awesome light weight gun. Gun is very clean well taken care of. I have another project I want to work on so I am getting rid of a few guns. Let me know!!! At most it has maybe 200 rounds shot through it. rifle.pdf

    bowfishing equipment sugestions

We use the Muzzy reals. Look like giant zebco reals. The have all metal pickups and hold up pretty good. We put 200 lb braid on them. Depends on what kind of fish you are shooting I guess. The bucket style real, dont know the name, did not really work for me. After I would shoot the line would keep dumping out of it, and I could not just real big fish in with it. You had to hand line them and then you would have string laying all over the place. I also use the little extension rod off the front of the real seat. If you forget to push the button on the real that little pole causes the arrow to get pulled off the string when you pull the bow back!
  17. I shot the insanity xl the other day. Bow seemed well put together. There were some cool options as far as the ability to change the leg of the valley that I really liked. The only thing that I really noticed when I shot it is that when the bow goes off there is a slight hum like a tuning fork that lasts just a milli-second. I could not hear it but could only feel it right when the bow went off. The only major complaints that I have really heard about bowtech is that the graphics and paint is a bit cheap but I have not heard anything about this new line. They are claiming to have changed that. They also made the grooves deeper on the cams to keep them from derailing, which according to the guy I talked to was happening when guys pulled them back with their fingers, the string gets torqued and when they let down it would derail. I am no bowtech guy or anything, that is just the main points that I came out with after shooting the bow!
  18. Well I packed up some mounts and had a booth at the White Mountain Elk Contest Banquet. Made some new friends and had a good time. I did not recognize any CWT Members if you were there. Anyone else attend??? Weather was beautiful, fishing was slow, but it sure beat the heat of Tucson!!! Here is a pic of the In-Laws, and my wife at my booth!!! Maybe Ill see some of you guys up there next year as I know lots of you got 27 and 1 tags. Don't forget to enter that contest if you have a Region 1 elk tag. They gave away a Ranger last year, and quad this year, and all kinds of bows and guns both years!!!

    Age of this buck?

I would agree on the 3 to 4 years old....Mostly because he is still hanging out with 2 and 3 year old deer. You have pics of him hanging with that group from velvet into hard horn. I tend to notice that 5 and up bucks tend to start living by themselves or pair up with another 1 or 2 older bucks. or sometimes hang with bucks till they strip their velvet. Not saying that you don't ever see an older buck with other young bucks but I think more than not they kind of just run into each other. I tend to notice that the older bucks don't really hang together with them that much. The bigger older buck will bed in a different spot away from the younger bucks and more than not he really does his own thing. I think feed and water draws them together more than anything. I was trying to keep an eye on a buck awhile back. When I first found him he was with a big group of bucks, i think there were 6. But more times than not when I went there to look for him all the bucks but him would be there. Just when it seemed like I should look somewhere else he would pop back in with that group of bucks again, then leave again. Birds of a feather flock together, so to speak. Anyone else notice this happening?

    White Mountain Elk Contest!!!!

She was close to winning the quad, but......there were 4 bulls all within 6 inches of each other. Jody got second place in the archery division!!!! Overall Jody's was the 4th biggest. There were two bigger that archers took and one bigger in the rifle division. It was a good time, except now we have some HOYT bow we don't know what to do with, hahahaha......Sorry Hoyt fans.

    Bowfishing Rigs

Built mine out of 16g one inch square stock. We have a deep V big bass tracker so mine is eight feet wide!!! Mine is removable, I did reinforce the cleats and added a couple I bolts to the floor for attaching the back. For the front I run a strap through the u bolt that you attach the boat to the trailer with. For the lights Hondas are the only way to power them!!, I use two of the 2000 watt ones. They are pretty quiet so you can talk to each other still. I use the halogens, went cheap there but 6 of the 500 watt-ers light up plenty! I think we can see 200 yards up the hills around the lake when we are shooting hahahah!!!
