Knowing where your going opening day?
Becker replied to AzVTR's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I agree with Elkhunter. Coues tend to be very habitual early season. Finding them is the hard part, but once you have you can be sure they are going to be there. Assuming that they are not getting pressure of some kind (Whether human or predators). If you are looking for a specific buck they become less predictable during the rut. Its hard to determine where they are going to go looking for does. If he lives somewhere where the doe population is small he might move several miles to find does. However... buck activity in general is very predictable during the rut. They travel ridge lines smelling thermals looking for does, hit saddles, and have scrape lines they work. The rut is a good time to catch that unsuspecting monster out being stupid searching for LOVE!!! The hardest part IMO is people having the necessary free time to spend scouting and patterning a specific deer. Its no easy task. I can think of several bucks over the last couple of years that my family has taken that was a stones throw away from the place where I first found them. One in particular I watched in the same draw for two years before we got a tag to harvest him. I would glass for him two times a week, he was always there. One of the bucks that Amanda has on one of the CWT T-shirts is in a video and they nicknamed him "clockwork" I believe. He did the same thing everyday to a T. There are lots of factors obviously that can change things.....Food sources, water, temperature, moon phase, but generally speaking Coues have a very small home range and they will be very close to place where you first saw them throughout the year. If you have the patience, and the time to dial into that you can become a very dangerous foe for the old sneaky Coues!!! Granted as long as everything falls into place, and I don't get messed up by other hunters, illegals, lions etc. , I want to be set up to shoot in grey light opening morning. Most of the hunt for me is all done preseason and I want to be waiting around for opening day to get it done!!! -
Well elk season has been in full swing for awhile now. Here at AZWD we have actually had multiple cases of spoiled elk capes. I wanted to remind you all to keep your capes cool and dry. Whatever taxidermist you choose we all recommend the same things. Don't skimp around on ice. Leave prepared with extra ice and Ice chests. Plan ahead in case you are lucky enough to kill. Talk to your taxidermist for recommendations to keep your capes safe. We are more than happy to spend the time talking with you before hand. Whether its elk, deer, bears etc. be prepared. Don't be that guy scratching his head with a spoiled cape! Good luck to all those with tags to come!!!

Well We headed off for Jody's DREAM HUNT.....Bull Moose in the North West Territories. Needless to say we were a bit excited. Jody planned on harvesting a big bull with her bow. When we got there we got slammed with a heat wave. Somehow we had pulled the Tucson heat with us clear up there. 70+ degrees, even reaching 80 Degrees one day!!! It did not help us when it comes to rutting moose. The big bulls were hot a lazy and the hunt turned into a spot and stalk deal rather quickly. As you can see from some of the pictures almost not possible in the SLIGHT BRUSH hahahaha. Just as an example we tried to put a stalk on a big bull. He was right a two miles away. It took us 6 hours to get there!!! We thought we were in relatively good shape but nothing can prepare you for pushing through 7 foot deep willows and brush. Over nine days Jody passed on several smaller bulls with her bow. Finally on the 10th day, and last morning (we were scheduled to fly out that night), we glassed up three big bulls and started calling. We managed to finally call this bull into rifle range and she elected to shoot him with the gun rather than come home empty handed. (I did manage to get a couple pics of him through the binos) We watched as he made his way towards us from 3/4 of a mile away. It was dead calm and his grunting echoed up the mountain the whole time. It was just like TV I was thinking!!! As the seconds turned into minutes the wind started to pick up a swirl. I was terrified he was going to wind us. He got to this little pond 440 yards away and was getting a drink perfectly broadside, Jody wasn't letting him get away! After pounding him three times (first shot probably did the trick, but we weren't taking chances) he finally tipped over and she could lay claim to her prize. SHE WAS PUMPED to say the least!!! I think the pictures do more justice than any typing that I can do to describe it so I will let them speak for themselves!!! Hope you all enjoy! For me it was an experience of a lifetime watching Jody accomplish one of her lifetime Dreams. Congrats again HONEY!!!

The Answer to Our Borders?
Becker replied to stanley's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I think NON_TYPICALSOLUTIONS nailed it on the head with his 545 vs 30000000 post or whatever he titled it!!!! I am by no means a political follower and don't know any of the mumbo jumbo when it comes to all the politics but I would think that our nation would (COULD, SHOULD) have the capability to control one border!!! The problem IMO is all the people running the government DON'T WANT to fix it. Simple as that. All these controversial issues/problems in every topic (NOT JUST THE BORDER) is made up just to point fingers at the other side. If everything was fixed what would they argue and campaign about. The problem can be fixed if we had the RIGHT people to fix it. who they are and how to do that???? I don't know. Our Nation has become blindfolded, soft, and naive. Start laying down the law!!! Start making people pay the price for what they have done or are doing, whatever it takes. Quit tippy toeing along with all these politician's so called agendas. How many lives is it going to take? IT SHOULD NOT BE ANY!!! With all our technology and resources, this so called BORDER ISSUE, should NOT EXIST! -
You can call me up anytime and talk prices! 520-282-3444 Or just stop in, We'd love to chat with you.... If your thinking European I would contact Cole at CMC Skull Works. He is also a sponsor of this site and top notch when it comes to product and customer service. Remember we do pick up and deliver throughout the state as well. Good Luck Hunting!!!

Well we squeaked away Saturday night to get some bow fishing in. Got on the water at 11PM and shot until 3AM!!! Water was really murky making for a tough night until this beast showed itself. Really there was no way it could hide HAHAHA. The three of us took shots but Jody managed to thump it with her pink arrow and get him in the boat!!! Not everyday you see one of these cruising about a regular lake. ENJOY!

Eric, It really depends on a lot of factors. The best thing to do is to put them into the freezer. They last a long time that way. I would soak them in water for 15 to twenty minutes, let them hang until no water is dripping off them anymore, maybe thirty minutes, then role them up tight in a bag and put them in the freezer. We have had a few hides that we have mounted that were 5 + years old this way. If you just leave them out what happens is the leather gets kind of rotten I guess you could say. When you soak them up they are really fragile. With just light pressure you can basically just rip them into pieces. It makes them almost impossible to mount. They won't hold stitching, you can't tuck the lips, it becomes a big mess. Hope this helps!

Looks like he has a belly full of meat!!!

My 2 cents, I still think a mandatory harvest, and a quota system similar to the bear hunts is the way to go!!!! Of course this is if the real reason behind all of this is DEER NUMBERS. This simple plan would take all the fight out of it. Archery success would be limited to the percentage, a set number of deer. Once it is met close the unit. Changing them to the draw seems way more complicated than putting in place a mandatory reporting and having a quota for the units. I would highly doubt that many units would even hit the harvest quota!!! Opening day comes everyone still gets to go that wants to, G and F still makes all their money, everyone is happy!!!

I am thinking about selling my video camera. Thought I would offer it up to the CW Family first. It is a Canon XH-A1. You see them a lot on all the professional hunting shows. Let me know if any of you are interested in it and we can talk!

So I stumbled onto this picture while I was surfing my computer. I was hiking to a high vantage point sheep scouting. It was hotter than blazes! There was this giant juniper tree up ahead with some shade. I decided it was a good spot for a break. I got into the shade and took off my back pack. I leaned down and got my water out of my pack, and stood back up straight, and just got this weird feeling. I turned and looked into the tree and this THING was staring back not two feet from my face!!!!!! I almost wet myself....after about falling back down the hill, I managed a few pics before I moved on. Thought it was pretty cool and you all might like to see it!!! Also I know Amanda does a ton of Owl work thought you would like this one!

What clothing do you wear in blind during august?
Becker replied to couesdeerhntr's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
If you guys are sitting water holes you could always set the blind up in the middle of the pond, half submerged, then you would be sitting in the water all day, NICE AND COOL!!! HAHAHAHA -

Guess the Score of this Nontypical buck
Becker replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
115 and 2/8 -
As mentioned above all or most of the deer tags end up selling, so what would be the difference if they let you on the first come first serve basis pick up a leftover/extra tag??? They sell anyway. And I am sure everyone would agree with you Casey that there are way to many tags. Everyone knows that. I have dreams of what potential we could have for Coues if we managed some of these units, AND I MEAN ACTUALLY MANAGED, for true trophy deer. And this is just my opinion but I believe that the majority of our deer are harvested between two and four years of age. If you watch the majority of eastern whitetail hunters, Example LEE and TIFFANY LAKOWSKI, They don't shoot deer until they are at least five. Granted they have food plots and what not but thats not the point. The point is for bucks to show their true potential they need age. I can only dream what say the Catalinas or Santa Ritas could be if deer were able to get to those higher age classes. Mexico is another example and why you see so many huge deer coming from there. They only allow a small percentage of the deer to be harvested allowing the deer to get into those higher age classes. Anyway I guess I got off topic a little but, No matter what the situation, if they are allocating a certain amount of tags I will try and get as many as I possibly can.

Sighting my Bow for G5 Montecs of Mechanicals?
Becker replied to rossislider's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I would agree with VIPER. Before I went to the Montecs I shot the Shuttle T's. They hit about 2 inches lower than my field tips all the way out to my maximum yardage. A simple adjustment of the whole sight was all that was needed. As long as the point of impact is the same as you move out, should fix it.
