Now your going to also comment and say 1000 yards is too far with a rifle??? So if I do my my practicing and KNOW that I can hit a 12 inch gong every time in certain restraint conditions, cause let's face it you have to put some limits on when you shoot that far, that I shouldn't be taking that shot if I am 100% confident? Shooting a 300 grain bullet that has more than enough KE to get the job done. Again it comes down to personal ability and preference. Trying to push your ideas onto me just because you can't do it, or think it's not "ethical" is about the same as half of the BS politics going on in our country. You should be able to get closer, I can show you places that I hunt where you can't. I honestly don't see how 300 yards is any different than 1000 in the right conditions. The animals don't have a chance either way. I never understood that whole game. Sitting 30 feet up in a tree stand with the wind in your face and having an animal walk by up wind is no different. Bottom line they don't know you are there. I think all you long distance bashers should really be using a stick with a sharp rock on the end. Other wise it ain't fair. Or better yet your bare hands. We are smarter than the animals in the woods. It ain't ever going to be fair!!!! Get over it.

Some could argue against you and say that the longer brace height means the arrow doesn't clear the bow as fast as the shorter brace height. Meaning there could actually be less acuracy because we are human and the longer that arrow is on the string the more time there is for you to move etc. ???? Just asking as this seems to be a fact orientated thread on what it takes to shoot well.

I'm all for it if you know. Turn around times are a touchy thing. And some people specifically say this is how long it's going to take. For those guys I have no complaints. Guys running a true one man studio tend to get swamped. At least if they are good. It just pains me to see some of the mounts people spend their hard earned earned money to get that are complete disasters. I'm generally not the guy to speak up as its really a personal choice but if guys would spend just a small bit of time and go look at people's work. They would save themselves some headache. I can probably count on one hand how many people have actually come to my shop just to look at the work over the last 2 years!!! Ohwell. Enough blab from me as I have already stepped out of my comfort zone on this type of topic

Hmmmm bad cape or maybe not yours. After thinking about it appears different compared to your bull. Going to look ok 12' up so you don't see the flaws???? Crazy long turn around time? Seriously how do you guys think all that's ok even with the health problems??? Even if you generally like the guy how do you PAY to get a crappy product with an even longer turn around time.

Interesting topic and discussion so far. I would venture a guess, based on sitting around the elk woods during elk season and seeing all of the random numbers thrown out at Bulls sitting in my possession, that very very few people have any idea about how to score elk. Once elk reach that 320-330 mark they start looking big IMO. AND that's when you start getting some serious air judging. Hahaha We have had 4 elk tags in my family over the last few years and have been pretty fortunate in harvesting some great Bulls. I harvested this bull. Grossed just a little over 380 if I remember right My brother in law killed this bull with me the following year. Believe it was around 338 gross inches. He was 51" inches wide tip to tip. Jody took this bull the next year. He grossed just under 330. And then Jody drew again and took this gross 372 with matching cheaters! Is 350 doable? YES. But I would guess majority of archery hunters would have shot each and everyone of the Bulls we have killed. They looked HUGE coming through the trees. You also have to keep in mind that just one inch on each point and beam will bump you up 12" and make a 340 a 352. I can't imagine that very many people in the heat of battle making split decisions would be able to tell. It is part luck unless you KNOW the animal before hand. Mostly we judge on "it looks BIG" better shoot. I would be lying to you if I told you I knew my bull was going to crest 380. He looked larger than life coming through the trees and I shot him. Even after he was down I called my dad and a couple friends and told them I shot a solid bull that was probably 360 ish. Back at cap I was shocked when we stretched the tape. Anyway, enough blabbing. That's my thoughts on elk. I'm truly a COUES junky anyway.

I heard some brookies were being caught but nothing other than that so take it for what it's worth. Also heard lots of fish outta reservation but that was it. No confirmed numbers lengths or weights.

I think it's funny that people think "scoring" has ruined hunting. Even in the post about the "good ol' days". It was a 3x3 or 4x4 or 30 inches wide. That's still a form of scoring. If it wasn't the hunters would simply say I got my deer would they not? As far as spread goes......seems to be its always been something people look for. There's something special about seeing a 30plus inch wide mule deer. I would bet if you asked, most mule deer guys would shoot the 30 inch wide 170 over the 26 inch 178. The other thing (since this was based more on deer) spread credit is measured inside the main beams. Just because the buck is 30 inches wide doesn't mean he gets 30 inches to the score. Probably going to be more like 24. What would be your method on moose if spread seams seems like a bad measurement. A 70 inch moose is pretty dang impressive when compared to a 50 incher. While I agree narrow deer get a little of the short end of the stick, there is something impressive, at least IMO, about an animal that has an extremely wide spread. Most people I know think the same thing. Why shouldn't they get some credit for that?

As long as the hide was tanned properly and the skull cap cleaned properly as well you should not have any big problems. Generally speaking birds and animals with horns are the ones to worry about.
-
So what your saying is your new method isn't really any different than the old method? Because the scores are way close to each other. So how does it really make a difference? I actually agree with you as far as mass on points. But the old system has been there sooooooo long. And it really is a good one. You get credit for the height when you measure those long tines that grew so tall. And you can only take spread credit equal to the length of the main beams. So if they are way way wide they don't get that extra. Also How are you going to account for all of those trophies if you want to compare yours? Not sure that sounds right but hopefully you get my idea. There's always those who say they don't care about score, but you'll see their picture when they shoot a big one. Hahahaha
