I have an elk tag and still on high alert I guess you could say hoping I get my deer tag!!!! While I'm excited for elk I'm a true coues junkie to the core. Would trade in my elk tag for a good coues tag any day of the week!!!! LOL

From what I understand the lower the better. You just have to be careful about how much room you have in your scope. Hence the high vs low and different rails. The higher you set your scope essentially the farther you can shoot with the turrets. If you can shoot to your desired longest yardages with the low rings then there's really no reason to have high ones. Just have to figure out your ballistics, decide how far you are shooting, and compare that to how much room you have in the scope. Hope that makes sense.

Kowa Highlanders/ for those who've had or used them
Becker replied to 1denogean's topic in Optics and tripods
All depends on your application. Most guys that I know with the kowas take a small stool to sit on and are quit comfortable. However if you are always looking down from high points they can be a pain depending on the angle. A client on the strip with me did nothing but complain about his neck after 7 days of looking straight down into this thicket off a big rim. Another factor for me was weight. The kowas are the heaviest. I went the doctor route for awhile. No complaints. Still have a set for backup or extra person just in case. Now I have two swaro 65 spotters mounted together. Shaved my weight down to a little over 7pbs vs the over 14 lb kowas. HUGE difference. Guys say they are truck glass but once you start using them you will carry them EVERYWHERE!!! I think it really just boils down to your preference. You will find guys happy on both ends of the topic. -
Hope to see some CWT members draw some sheep tags!!! Good luck in the draw. Here's a pic of a ram a buddy and myself have been watching for a couple years. Maybe we will get lucky and draw!!!

Looking Forward to the Draw Deadline Tonight!!!

Appears the system worked well without glitches. I know I didn't have a problem applying the last day possible!!! Wonder what all the Extension BASHERS are going to do for the next couple of days. hahahaha -
I have a 338 edge. Not the Lapua but similar. Look at the wyatts extended magazine box. I can load mine with on the lands rounds with room to spare.

My buddy uses the bad lands magnetic one. But you have to go try a few out as some are smaller than others so some won't fit the 15s. I have I believe an Alaskan one. I'll look and let you know. I prefer full protection vs just the wrap kind.

While I understand a guys perspective about hunting with more primitive weapons I am really against limiting others that choose to use more advanced but same type of weapons. I am one that likes to be sure I am making an ethical type shot and killing the animal. Not letting me put a scope on my muzzleloader? What the hairy does that accomplish. IMO that means less accurate hunters in the field wounding more animals. I'm not saying that it can't be done and you can't shoot well out to 150 yards or so with that but come on! This is just my opinion. We all know that not every hunter is going to put in the time or have the "ethics" on their true capabilities. Traditional archery??? That's a whole other can of worms for me. There are very good traditional shooters. However, go to the archery shoots and compare the scores of trad shooters to wheelie bows. It's just not the same and never will be. Limiting other guys that really want to be proficient in accuracy seems backwards to me. Like mentioned above...... Nothing is stopping people from using what they want when it comes to primitive weapons. By why make me suffer if I want to use more technology????

Going from 15x58 to 12x50. Will I regret it?
Becker replied to kennyazman's topic in Optics and tripods
I'm not sure what everyone is talking about with clarity issues in the 15's. Unless it's with less quality optics. Swaros are the only route I have gone. My 15's are as clear as any of the 10's I have looked through. I haven't looked trough the 12's though. I carry my 15's in a Bino harness on my chest. Haven't ever had a problem. They are a little shaky if your busting brush and breathing hard but when I see something I wanna shoot there's no second guessing. Plus having walking sticks and trees to lean against can always get more stable. Sometimes it's a bummer when your glassing close stuff cause it takes a little longer but I'm a firm believer in being able to see through brush. Higher power has paid off more times then not. 15's around my neck and big eyes in the pack.......watch out!!!! -
You might look at Parker muzzleloading bullets. I thought I saw on their website a bullet they were shooting without a sabot. They seemed like a small company that you could call and ask tons of questions. Just a thought if you're still having problems.

Back country backpack trip for Coues
Becker replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
So what water filters are you guys using. I need to get a good one but haven't looked into them lately? -
Elk, cattle, and bears are most often the culprit when it appears that your camera was messed with. That would be my bet. I have pictures of a cow unwinding my cable lock from around a tree. Then chewing on the end. Then several pictures of it yanking on the cable until the camera was pointing backwards and down at the dirt. Bears chew rip and massacre them. Elk tend to be pretty curious as well and will knock them around. Had rats/squirrels chew through the nice straps and find the camera on the ground. Woodpeckers peck out the sensor and camera lense holes and make it look like it was shot with a 22. You name it. The best solution I have found to keep your camera on the tree pointed the right way is to use bailing wire and wire the crap out of it. Of course a crazy bear will still destroy it. hahahaha

I understand some of the fuss about getting first crack. But just talking about this year. Are 25 muzzy tags really going to change the dynamics archery hunt?
-
GreyGhost I stole your 27 late bull tag with my 8 points!!!! Sorry but not really 😜

Dang JIM!!!!! Now I'm going to have to do one just to keep up! Bwahahahaha

^^^^^ Really?

Might be a faulty cam. My coverts take pictures like retards when it gets hot. I electrical tape around the sensor and just leave slightly bigger than a 1/4 inch square in the middle. Really helps cut back on the false trigger. Just have to experiment. Some are super sensitive and still photo away. Others I have covered up too much and they won't take pictures. I mark sensitive ones and don't put those in the hard to get to spots.

Glassed up this bull with two smaller bulls on Saturday. Already forking out his 5ths!!!

There's never a bad time to run cameras. The more information you can gather the better. For instance what times of the day and night are deer getting their pictures taken during certain moon phases, perhaps bad weather, just deer movement in general. I have some cameras I run all year. Although from May to June the Coues Bucks don't have much to show for head gear. Still cool to see how their antlers grow etc.

Yeah " I wouldn't listen to any of these guys." My personal opinion agreeing with .270 is especially take .270's advice with a grain of salt. J.S.R. Has givin the best advise so far. It really depends on what type of deer you are looking for. Every coues unit holds giants. If you are just looking for a branch antlered deer doesnt matter the unit. Look at the draw odds. Apply accordingly. If you want a big buck homework is the key. The more scouting you can do the better. Apply close to home so you can make the most out of your scouting. Glass glass glass and glass some more. The better your optics the better your success. You can get away with anything but the most successful guys out there have the best money can buy. There's a reason for that. you gotta think about what a deer would be. How can I hide from all these hunters. (Lay down and stay hidden) Look there. And look multiple times. Persistence and patience. Good luck!!!!
