My 2006 Archery Coues hunt
Flash replied to crazyaboutcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
It's amazing to me how so many of you guys can find and kill these bucks in the pines. I wish I could figure it out. I've searched alot of country that I know deer move through and never find a rub. Good job!!!! -
Did anyone buy a San Carlos tag? I've got lots of mixed comments on the chances of a 100" buck with hard hunting during the Nov. hunt, so I chickened out and didn't buy one. I've never been there before. Maybe some day I'll have the guts (and $) to try it :}

My try.

Well good job. Nive looking deer. I can't believe he gave you so many opportunities! Must have been a lucky deer and not had many lions try to have him for dinner in the past. What unit you hunting that's open this time of the year?
-
I know they are first come, first serve, but do you have to buy them on the reservation or can you apply through the mail?
-
Well, I can't say I agree with the price, but Jim White's tripod head is really good when you're talking steady and no play. Call him direct, 928-635-5316.

I guess Browning is lying, but they claim you can adjust the BOSS (which is a muzzle break) and group your shots better. Dang those guys!

Any pics of your late rifle elk hunt (saw you boys drive by a couple times)?
-
Still have the bike?

According to my reloading books, there is a 139 grain bullet with really good ballistics. It recommends that as the way to go for reloading. Factory you'll have to stick to 120 grain tops. Go out and get yourself a good reloading book or surf the net and you'll probablly some more specifics. As for the guns, are you guys sure you're talking about the price of a Mark V? That's a pricey gun! Weatherby does have a bottom line gun called a Vanguard that ranges from $400-$850.

I'll send you a PM. Thanks.

During the rut, most of the bulls in 10 I saw were broken. Not seeing a bull anywhere in 10 now. Hoping to find a 300" class bull for the rifle hunt. Not looking good yet.
-
Sounds like you found the mother load. Been scouting a few times now with no bulls found yet. We must not be near each other I hope to find just 1 average bull for the hunt.

Posting for a friend of a friend: Leica 10x42 binoculars. All original packaging/accessories included as well as a custom made tripod adapter and cleaning clothes. Good shape, no scrathes. Asking $800. Garmin Summit Etrex GPS, small scratch on edge of screen, does not effect view of screen, comes with original contents plus protective carrying case, computer cable, car charger, RAM vehicle mount. The cool thing with this model is an always active compass so it doesn't bounce around while looking for satelites. $100. Contact me with questions or interest and I'll pass it along. THANKS.

I've ridden in a Ranger several times. You can fit three adults in the front seat fairly comfortablly. They are amazingly smooth riding and worth the purchase! Drawback, both of the ones I've ridden in needed major repair in the first 12 hours of use.

I'll probablly be hunting with a remington 7mm Mag this year and am wondering if anyone has a recommendation for what bullet to choose. I'll be hunting some thick stuff so a close shot is possible, but am planning it will be a typical shot, 250-350 yards. Thanks for the advise.
-
Just got to hate those experiences. Too many of them these days!
-
How would you compare the recoil of the 257 WM to a 243 or 7mm mag?
-
Anyone hunt the unit 7W archery elk hunt?

Hunted a couple days. I'll send you a PM. -
I don't know 17, look around on the internet for a while and you'll find a few 370 bulls. It's a lot easier too!
-
Hey gang. Sorry to clober the coues sight for elk, but I'll be helping out my buddy's 65 year old father on the early bull hunt in 9 in a week and a half and was wondering if anyone has been out or heard of any big bulls running around up there. Spent the last couple days up there with nothing over 320" running the herds. I would sure like to help make this guys dreams come true with a 370" bull. I didn't get up to the Grandview area yet, which I know holds good bulls each year, but sure not real excited with what I saw in other areas.

"guide him", funny. I guess I'll start working for all of our good buddy at USO and be official...heee he! How about we call it an excuse to be in the woods instead of a guided hunt. I am glad to see that someone else actually believes as I do and that 370" elk arn't that common because it is sure hard to hear a hunting story these days without everything being that big or bigger. Heck, just got back from a scouting trip and talked to a hunter wit about a 280" bull (and I congratulated him on his accomplishment) who told me all he saw were a few 370-380" bulls, nothing big. He also said he passed at least 5 350" bulls. I wanted to ask him why he was gutting out a 280" bull then, but why bother you know. Oh well, anyways, I get all your points about telling exact spots on the internet. I'm with you. I was just thinking since that tag was practiclly a once in a lifetime that someone wouldn't mind passing along some help and I just hated to see the smart-alik resposes. My mamma always said if you don't have anything nice to say......Thanks anyways and Reddog, what the heck, go out there and find yourself a 125" buck and make us all drool and be green with envy!
