IMO, this incident sure makes a big statement on the guide and what he is willing to do to knock down a big money maker animal. Guiding has made hunting a different thing than it once was and I am glad that some of the other guides out there don't follow the same recklessness to havest an animal.

Very sad news. He loved to hunt. In fact, he is even in the recent MuleyCrazy magazine with that monster archery buck of his from last year. Life just doesn't make sense sometimes. My thoughts and prayers to all his friends and family.

Lookin4amonster, I'll be down there by myself and have never stepped foot in the unit before. Lets hope the bucks are out and about!

It's been a long time for me, but I have a friend that killed some nice deer during the late 90's in there. I know private land access is an issue in some of the unit.

I haven't heard of that with a Vanguard, but have heard and experienced many issues with bases that were suppose to work and din't work on a rifle for what ever reason. Weatherby makes a base/ring set for the Vanguard and is the way to go for your rifle. No complaints with my Vanguard. You can get them off Weatherby's website for sure and I think I have seen them a a few stores before.

Be sure you dial it in if you start trying different bullets because they will shoot a little different. I can speak from experience that the Remington 150 gr. Core-Lokt PSP will get the job done and are fairly cheap, but I would consider a heavier bullet like the 175gr. CL-PSP. Whatever you choose, just be sure you are accurate and can put it in the kill zone.

Anyone know of a good map of 36C out there? All I am seeing on the web are 1:100000 maps which don't usually show many roads, only the major ones.

I am one of the fortunate hunters to have a December tag in 36C. I have never been there before and it looks like the first part of my hunt and my scouting trips I am going to be alone (of course when I applied everyone wanted top go if I got a tag :}). I have heard a lot of stories of problems down there with illegal alien activity and I have had a bad experience like that before in another area. I'm not sure where I will be hunting yet, but I am wondering on your opinions on safety of camping alone down there. I am worried about a late night visit and mostly about coming back to a ransacked camp. Any feelings on it? Thanks.

Not sure the pressure during the deer hunt, but just got back from there and the elk hunters were moderate in that area. Saw most of the deer in the southern part of the unit.

Just came in for a restock on supplies from the same hunt. I definitly congratulate the hunter. It is really difficut out there. I haven't seen a bull yet and have hunted hard and scouted even harder! Many miles on foot and vehicle with nothing to show for it but some sore feet and a few rattlers. The deer picture is cool. I have been smelling something dead on my way in to an area and have been thinking of taking a look. It looks like lion country and is probably a kill in there somewhere. Good work and hopefully I can get a little luck my way and share a picture too.

CouesHunter84, How are you guys fairing on that hunt? Be heading that way soon for the next hunt and not having much luck on the scouting trips.

I bet you'll find something worth pursuing. My buddy has an elk tag down there and will probably scout with him a bit. I'll let you know if we see anything. Here is a buck from an earlier scouting trip. Let me know if you run into any elk while you are there! Good luck.
