280ai bdl or dBm bottom metal?
rkv09 replied to Crazymonkey's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I would go with dpm, specifically Hawkins precision hunter bottom metal. It will sit flush and their new mag allow a 3.770 coal for standard actions. This will allow you to seat the longer vld bullet out of the powder column in the .280 AI, assuming you are throating for the longer bullets and not the standard 3.4 coal. -
I drew the 29/30 late January hunt.

Going to chase some barbary sheep, haven't drawn anything in New Mexico in years.

Proposed fall, spring hunt recommendations for 2022-2023 available for review
rkv09 replied to maximus's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Last page has the proposed limited entry hunt, one tag for multiple units and extended dates. Just like they did last fall but with more species and tags. There is two hunts in August for coues. Just another money grab but a fool and his money are soon departed and I am an idiot. 😂 -

Ya that is how I read it. Not sure why you would want to hunt coues with a rifle on August first. Not even close to being done growing their antlers. -
Drew a 23 late bull, now its just a long wait.

Arrowhead rifles did a great job rebarreling my rem UML and installing his ignition system.

Late bull tags for my buddy and myself, no jr tag for my son though.

I use 20 percent pork butt with the Leggs seasoning. Come outs great. I tried Hank Shaw's chorizo recipe and it came out alright. Maybe I jacked it up but either way the Leggs chorizo seasoning is easy and good.

I drew my first elk tag in 22N and was successful with a 5x5 raghorn. That unit is managed for opportunity and I am grateful for that. As long as people understand that it is an opportunity hunt not an Arizona "trophy" bull hunt. Do all the tags hurt the population? heck ya. Are you gonna see a bunch of other hunters? heck ya. Can you draw the tag every couple of years? heck ya. Have I applied since that tag? heck No. Did my unit one bull look pretty much like my 22N bull? Yup. Can I pass on bulls? Nope. AZ has some of the best elk but it takes forever to get that trophy early hunt. My wife has never gone elk hunting but is committed to an early rifle bull tag, thanks to her father. 18 points later and the tag still isn't in sight. Now I have drawn three late bulls tags and an early archery bull tag in the same time frame and been successful. None are of trophy standards, my only 6x6 is from CO, but I would rather have those memories and experience over waiting for a trophy elk tag. Keep the trophy units managed as such and have some opportunity hunts as well. Just know what you are applying for. We can't all hold out for that 4B archery tag.

I assumed that was you, just gotta find out which hunts we got.

Same here, long time for a turkey tag.

The interview he did with Black Rifle Coffee had me laughing, definitely a stand up American. https://coffeeordie.com/pogue-marine/

Wind drift is a factor with lr muzzle loaders, just have to practice with your rifle to get it down. If the conditions are windy, it severely affects my range.

I was able to draw a third season deer tag, first tag I have drawn all year.

To fit your budget I would look at the kimber hunter line of rifles. Not the prettiest looking thing but they are light. I have one in 280AI with a Swaro Z3 3-10x42 with talley one piece rings. Rifle weighs 6 lbs 3 oz unloaded. If you went with a short action you could save some more weight. That rifles shoots 143 hammer bullets in a 3/4" group at 100. Rifle might shoot better but I am not the best at shooting a lightweight rifle. I am into that setup for just over 1200 bucks.

Midway's pricing is ridiculous. 48.99 a box. I picked up 4 boxes for 36.69 on Monday. Keep on eye out on https://store.thirdgenerationshootingsupply.com/ I have been able to pick up powder and bullets from them at normal prices.

I sold my .05 shares at .40 cents. Wish I had bought more in January instead of AMC haha.

New Mexico results are out. Nothing for me.

I had a remington UML and I couldnt get it to shoot worth a dang. I think it was just the luck of the draw, as recurveman stated and have others, the uml can be accurate out of the box. I sent off my uml to Luke at Arrowhead Rifle,(now in phx) and had him rebarrel with a brux barrel and his ignition system. I am shooting sub moa groups at 100 and smashing rocks at 600 yards with BH209 with this set up. Luke's bullets have good bc for muzzle loader bullets but the wind still affects them more then most bullets. I would recommend a muzzlebreak, the recoil can be stiff with healthy dose if bh209 and 300 grain bullets. I just looked up the asking price for the paramounts and I think you would be better off finding a cheap donor SA 700 and having arrowhead spin on a new barrel and ignition system.

That's the best way to use a Javelina in my opinion. I debone the rear quarters after removing the shanks and brine them for a couple of days. I smoke them to 145 and they always turn out great. I also make pastrami out of the backstraps and that turns out pretty good as well.

S. Az Duck guide?
rkv09 replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
That's pretty much how I got into it. I just figured out where ponds are with water and figured out a route. Ducks are really skittish this year along with many ponds being dry. If you don't have a dog like myself I always bring a fishing pole. Wading into cow ponds in the winter sucks. -
Ouch. A local store had them for 65 dollars and I thought that was steep.
