Willcox Playa and Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area
rkv09 replied to bluedevil99's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
It's pretty much all private land around the whitewater, farm land mostly. I wouldn't make the drive unless you want a road trip or you know people in that area -
Chuy! About time I see your buck. Nobody had it at work. Nice job buddy.

My wife and I had this early rifle hunt and I spent most of the summer hanging up cameras and scouting different areas in the unit. Seeing some good bucks and had a good idea of what I was going to be doing for the hunt. Opening morning comes and I take off with my brother in law to our spots and my wife goes out with her father and his hunting buddies. I glass up two little forkies running together and does, same story with her back at camp. Saturday morning I head out to another spot with my brother in law. About 9 am I turn on the radio and I hear my father in law say the buck was down and they were heading in. I ask him how big it was and he said a nice 3 point. I get excited for my wife but I continue glassing to no avail. We head back to camp and I am greeted with a very happy wife and this monster buck! Not to mention the tiniest bit of ribbing. We scored this buck at gross 109, net 102. He has 5" bases, one thick buck. Nice to have a taxidermist in camp with ya! Her story is her and her dad were still hunting a drainage and had already passed up a little two point that morning. They saw this buck running with a bigger buck and a doe. The bucks were moving right up the drainage at them. They got set up and waited for the bucks to get into range. When the bucks walked over the knob the sun was directly in my wife’s eyes and she couldn’t see the bucks. My father in law used his hat to cover the scope and she touched off a round. At 183 yard the bullet from her .280 dropped that buck! She made a great shot to get the best deer she has harvested. Sorry I don’t have any field pics they are on my father in laws camera. Well this being my second Coues hunt and I didn't tag one last time I wasn’t looking for a monster but a decent three point. I hunted Sunday without seeing a buck, just does and quail. Monday morning came and we hit the same mountain as Sunday night. As soon as the sun came up I spotted two deer, couldn’t make out any horns with the low light but I watched em until I could make em out. The smaller deer was a litte fork and I could see the other was a 3 point. That was all I needed so I took off on a stalk. The buck was getting nervous while feeding and was looking in my direction. I got to a tree that would make a decent rest and ranged him at 415 yards. I turned the turrets up to 400 and let the 130 grain SST go. I lost the buck in the recoil but I heard on the radio buck down. I waited for my brother in law and then we headed up the mountain to check him out. He had ran about 20 yards and rolled over on his back. I saw the three points on one side and when we rolled him over he a nice little extra point. This was my first Coues deer and I am pretty happy with him. Cant wait for January and I might stay away from those muleys next year. Pic of both of our bucks this year.

3rd goulds tag?? I can't even get one!

It is always fun hunting with the wife, too bad she got a much larger deer then me! Plus she always finds out when I buy new hunting gear. But she did use some old nikon action binos while I bought the vortex razer hd and look at the results. Ernesto that was a bottle of Fireball, a cinnamon whiskey which was gone by the time I showed up to camp.

I like the backside of the Huachucas more so then the front side but if you want something closer to town look at the Mustangs always deer in there, just a LOT of gates. Haha.
