Having issue with sierra hpbt feeding unless seated very deep
apache12 replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
So I called sierra today and talked to the, about my issue They said that it sounds like the ogive is to high and the bullet won't feed well. He then said he wouldn't recimmend it for a hunt round but I had read it was good. Anyway strange issue. I ink part gun part bullet -
Having issue with sierra hpbt feeding unless seated very deep
apache12 posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
So is this rifle or bullet design I have a tc venture in 243. Nothing fancy but this rifle shoot so well it's just amazing I've always shot factory hornady sst or my boys have I should say. They've taken two deer and pig anyway I bought some Sierra 85 grn hpbt to load up my first hand loads for this caliber I measured the overal length with my hornady tool and the. Backed off .015 and .030 Loaded a dummy. Round to check feed from the magazine and when I cycled the round would hit the wall below chamber and stop I went and shortened and same thing I checked my factory sst and it cycled fine Is eared the siera the same length has factory and same thing it the wall I should say if I feed with out magazine all bullets fit fine they weren't to long So I kept shortening the Sierra and same thing. It's now rediculouly deep and I'm concerned with pressure difference I know the sst and Sierra have a different ogive and that's part of it but this is strange Should I avoid a max load a bullet seated so deep? By the way even with the seating depth in pic it has to double cycle bolt to feed -
Having issue with sierra hpbt feeding unless seated very deep
apache12 replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have not put a light in. That makes sense I will. I think the rifle is he issue. I had issue with it a few years back where the magazine would feed poorly. I sent it back for that recall and they corrected it The bolt is also a little stiff It's a temperamental rifle for sure. But of e seven rifles I own this one could be the most accurate with any ammo. I keep thinking i should sell it and then I shoot it and stop thinking that -

To confirm I pulld the Sierra bullet and didn't resize and loaded a hornady sst in it and it chamber perfectly -
Having issue with sierra hpbt feeding unless seated very deep
apache12 replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
So I just went a bought hornady sst 95 grn and loaded into e same set of brass that I loaded the sierra in and it cycles smooth as glass So strange I had trimmed and measured brass sized full length and the rifle will cycle ballistic tip fine and not cycle sierra hpbt -

I may not have described it right The cartridge doesn't ever make intonthe barrel The tip hits right below the barrel and stops I sized with a full size die -
I'm selling for a hunting buddy of mine who isn't on the site. He has changed caliber and wants to sell this rifle It's about 3 years old and has had maybe 200 rounds through it Good condition Synthetic stock but surprisingly solid feel for synthetic Shoots well. Ive seen him take to pigs at 200 yrds with Lil 110 gr 270 and last year a cow elk at 370 yrd Little barrel scratch on barrel as in picture. Otherwise good condition $450obo. He is in phx Pm and I'll send you his number his name is Don He is in a fishing trip sun-wed But if interested I can grab it and sell on his behalf I suppose

So you guys know I'm new to loading. Everything I've read on 30-06 loads say imr 4350 at 57 gr or 58 in a 165 gr bullet is money load I've loaded hornady 165 sp and sierra 165 spbt. I've run from 55 gr to 57.5 at .5 increments The siera seem to group better and between 56 and 57 seems like my best groups but they are pretty average groups. One inch at 100. I've used listed col 3.330 and 3.340. They load a bit tight so I think I will use 57 grn load and seat bullet a little deeper Anyone have a suggestion on if I should try a different powder or just keep tinkering with this? It's a stock rifle and I don't expect magic groups but so far its grouping as well as factory loads and I think I should be able to reload better Thanks

Minox az 5 hd 3-15x42 On eurooptics for $299. I own one and a viper 4-16. Equally as clear but the reticle is a little thicker than viper Adjustment a little tight

Factory rifle savage 111 with laminated stock and accutrigger Vortex 4-16x44 BDC Not going to dump any money in the rifle. Ive seen it shoot well for years It's truly my hand loading that must be this issue. I'm carful to measure charge and seated bullet depth. So it's just my playing with it some more I intend to use it for over counter bear Oct 2. Have a nice spot with some activity so hoping to dial in for a 300 yrs accurate shot I would think about ladder test but gosh with this heat it could take to long to accomplish waiting for barrel to cool I bought some 4451 imr I'm going to try -
Excellent condition scope one inch tube. Pop and turn reticle wind age and elevation adjustment turrets Ebx holdover reticle. Weaver makes very durable scopes and I've compared this to my vx 2 in low light and its a bit brighter and about the same as my vortex viper HS It's on my 11 year olds 243 and he just isn't a fan of the ebx reticle. Too much going on. These ago for between 475 and 650 online Even at Walmart online for $579 Photo is stock. I can post actual later

Thanks Bill I understan about moa being acceptable. My complaint is that factory ammo shot better in this rifle and I've tried a number of powder charges with random results off a rest and also just off a bag Think I'll tinker with seat depth a bit -
In title $300

Not much load data but seems to be like 4350 but better heat tolerance and useful for lots of standars loads I think with out wild heat swings from hit in phx tuc. To cool on the rim for fall hunts this might be a good option Anyone have any luck? They have lots at cabelas

Wow I can't afford it but I'd love to see pics. What a great set up. Good luck!

THOMPSON ICON 300 WIN. MAG SWAROVSKI SCOPE
apache12 replied to Ron's Taxidermy's topic in Classified Ads
For what it's worth I have the cheaper Thompson venture in 243. And it may be a bit heavy but it shoot clovers and eats any ammo I've put in it. The icon should be a great shooter
