I wouldn't just walk out to somewhere and drop off a salt block. Scout the area out for sign that the animals are using that area for either a travel route, bedding area, or feeding area. Those will give you the best chance of finding a good spot that won't take too long for them to hit it. Other wise you are just hoping that they will happen by it, and remember where it was. As for the trail cams, if you are willing to put about another $20 or so into the price, you can get a digi stealth cam with I think 3 megapixels or so. They are great cams, and the photos they take are of high quality. Or, you can take that money and buy a few 35mm ones, or a 35mm one for high traffic areas and a lesser quality digital one for the more remote areas. The only problem I have with the expensive $300 + cameras are the fact you have to leave them on public land on a tree as you walk away. I'm sure you saw my post in the other trail cam thread about wal-marts new .3 megapixle (that's .3, as in less than one) digicam that costs around $55 out the door or so. The photos are not going to win any awards, but they allow you to see what is out there, with some detail. I'm still in the testing phase of mine, and so far I'm happy with it. I think I saw the same camera with a 1.3, or maybe 2 megapixle camera for $75 or so at cabela's but don't quote me on that. When you do find a cam to use, be sure you buy a good lock and chain. I just use a bicycle combo lock for mine. The combo lock is great because I have huge issues with keys. Mostly loosing them, or forgetting them but either way this way I don't need a key.

Anyone out there wanna go practice for bowhunting
BASS replied to eric's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Oh, after re-reading your post you said you go to ben avery, I was thinking about Usery Pass Sorry for the confusion. -
Yeah, pay the cash for the class, take a couple notes, sleep through the videos and then take the test. Kind of like Biology in high school. It's a super easy way to get a bonus point that never goes away.

Anyone out there wanna go practice for bowhunting

What's the deal there? I think the last time I went there it was $7 at the gate (honor system) and that got you the 3d course and the range. Is it still like that? I think it would be fun to have a CWT.com meet. Who knows, I might stop by Friday morning, I need to work some stuff out with my bow. -
I figured that it might be a very young buck, just because it seemed strange that there be that many bucks, then only one doe.

Any word on the Winchester Apex MZL?
BASS replied to More D's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
I have an APEX. They are made in Spain if I remember right. The one I have uses the "falling block" type primer, and hammer rear end. I shoot the 3 50/50 powder pushing a 125gr. sabot round dead on at 100 yards open sights. It is drilled and tapped for a scope, but I just never put one on it. My dad also uses a CVA muzzle stuffer but I can't remember the model. His has a scope with see through rings, and uses the same load with great accuracy. I havn't hunting with mine very much, but still take it to the range to shoot every now and then. It's fun to watch all the high tech 10-22 shooters get upset as the large black cloud drifts down the line. -
There was a total of five deer in this herd. Four buck, one large one (in the photos above) two nice sized bucks, and a smaller fork. They were running with either a very young buck with little or no antlers, or a doe. I'm not sure if we are talking about the same animals or not, I'll PM you later to find out more. -Kenny I know! The adrenalin dump from being that close (+/- 40 yards) to that many buck was too much. But after watching the video over and over that night, then opening my phone and seeing the 90" coues I have on the background gave me the same feeling. There is something about these whitetail....

There ya go! Now we can see some more detail, and boy are those boys big! -Kenny

Tell you what, you tell me the location of your established salt, and I'll give you the local of this herd.

bhazherper, welcome to the state, and to the site! That is a very close up photo, what kind of camera are you using? Now.... how did that old rhyme go? Red and yellow kill a fellow, red, and black is no harm to Jack? -
Well... if you pay really close attention.... you may find out..... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7422677302043811147

Aha! So these bucks were taken in the North-Western part of the state! Nice pics, thanks for posting.

*note to self.... avoid this thread from now on* -
Believe me, mine are seeing their last days in the feild. I really should buy a new pairnow and break them in because if I do a lot of walking in them my feet are hurtin' by the end of the day.

Yeah, I've had my Danners for about two years or so, and they are starting to smell a bit too. Try to swap out the insoles for some new ones and that should help a little bit.

That rain photo is really cool!

Yeah there are a couple mounts in the museum that look horrible, but has anyone looked at the "Jackrabbit" they have in there? I think it is by the coues area if I remember right. That thing looks almost like it should be in a horror movie! If you look close you can see where they joined the two pelts, it goes from grey to almost white with a perfect line between the two. Also the body is tiny, and the ears all of six inches the face is enough to make me stay in the house. One of the worst mounts there I think.

Apache maid got hit really hard about 1400 or so Friday. I took off in the rhino after it cleared up, and only made it about two miles before I had to turn it around. The entire passenger side, seat, and floor board was covered in mud till it looked like I had a person sitting next to me. I did see a ton of deer though. Two coues bucks together that I think would have scored about 80+ for each of them. Then I got some bouncy (really bouncy) video of some mule deer that I'm trying to work on to post here.

+1, it took me a while to figure it out on this small screen laptop. This is a nice rack too.

Yeah, no kidding. What are you guys planning on doing this weekend? Is Shanun going up there again?

I see you live in Chandler. You might want to run a notice over to Islands Animal Clinic on Elliot and McQueen in Gilbert. They will help you find an A+ home for your pup. Here is their number (480) 892-3558, if you want, you can tell them Ken Bass sent you.

Nice buck in Northern AZ

That's a nice looking buck. Are those salt pellets, or something else? -
This cabin wasn't near "June's Dairy Delight" was it?

I know that Flag. got hammered last weekend. I was driving back into town for some KFC for dinner to take back to camp about 8 or 9 at night. My windshield wipers couldn't keep up with the rain. At one point the entire street for about two miles was solid water from curb to curb. I was second guessing my new intake through some of those puddles! Everything is starting to green up, and I hope the water holes atleast have some water in them. This weekend we might have two camps up near Apache Maide Mt. I will be in a wall tent as close to the mountain as possible, and the toy hauler (if they come) will be closer to the highway incase the rain hits real hard. I don't know about the fishing, heck it's scouting season boy! I guess you could hit up Lake Mary, but that's a little drive from 6A. Josh, thanks again!
