    WOW really?

  12. After finishing my hunt in October, I had forgot that my Uncle had the next Whitetail hunt. I have been helping him the last few years now shooting some smaller bucks until this year. Thursday night before opening day I was in an area, the wind was blowing and I didn't see a thing. I met up up with my uncle and dad after I got off the mountain to let them know I didn't see anything but I still felt good about the area and that was where we would hunt. It was about that time he realized he left his tag at home! Him and my dad had to head back to his house in Phoenix to get it. Friday morning rolled around and we were off. It wasn't till about 730 I glassed up the first deer. It was a buck and I could tell it was a good one! I didn't bother putting the spotting scope on him since I could tell he was a 100" type buck and that was beyond his expectations. I decide to stay put and watch the buck till he beds (which was about an hour later) I make sure my dads on him and tell him if he gets up to let me know. My uncle and I take off. We end up across a canyon at 471 yards from the buck still bedded. I get him all setup in my rifle, make sure he can find where the deer was and the wait was on. About an hour and half later the deer stands. My uncle briefly see's him in the scope and the buck starts walking. We played the 10 minute game of me jumping back and forth between the rifle to help him get on the buck and back to my bins. No shot was taking because my uncle could not see the deer in the scope. It may have been one of the most frustrating moments in my hunting career to watch that buck walk away! We finished out the day not turning the deer back up. My uncle wasn't very happy and kept telling me that may have been his only chance at a buck that size. We busted his balls quite a bit but I told him we would find this buck again. I called my buddy Justin Friday night to tell him the story and see if he wanted to come Saturday morning. Like always, He was in. Saturday morning, We head in. We get to where we glass from and 2 minutes into glassing I have the buck. I tell Justin where he is and Justin tells me immediately, He just laid down! I point to my uncle where we have to go and we were off. We get to where we want to be and it puts us 438 yards from the buck. I get some good reference points for my uncle, get him set up on my gun and pack and he's on the deer. My uncle tells me he can kill him in his bed but I said no will let him stand. For just over an hour my Uncle laid in the gun not taking his eyes off this buck. I could see the sun getting real close to him and told my uncle to get ready. No more than a minute later the deer stood. I told my uncle I was ready and he let one go. I watched the vapor trail travel perfectly behind the shoulder. The deer ran about 10 feet and tumbled! It was over! I knew this buck had 4 on his right side and 3 on the left, To our surprise when we got to him he was a straight 4x4. I ended up taping this buck at 109 3/8"

74 Years old and Getting it Done

Sorry Im computer dumb, I think Ive got it all there now
  14. Another awesome year of hunting Coues deer has come to an end. This year I had the second choice of which buck i wanted to hunt. My buddy Justin had the first choice this year. Archery season came and went but not without Justin putting down a monster buck! Definitely the biggest Coues buck I've ever walked up on laying dead. Now we had some work to do to find / watch a buck that I wanted to kill with a rifle. Rewind to August 7th, I went out for a quick morning glass into an area to see if I could find any bucks we left from the year before. It was pretty early to be glassing but I figured if they were bigger bucks they'd be grown pretty well by then. About mid morning I was watching a small buck that I thought nothing of until something on his right side just didn't seem right. I put the spotting scope on him to find that he was growing a second main beam. First thing that came to my mind was that will be an awesome buck he will be next year! I took a few pictures with my phone, sent them to Justin and told him we have another one for next year, his name is DUB-T (double beam with trash) and continued on with the morning. We had a couple different bucks that we focused a lot of time on only to not turn them up. We were frustrated and couldn't believe we could not find these deer. I ran out to check a camera which had a buck on that I was going to settle with and hunt. He was a buck we have had on camera the last few years and this year he put on a little bit of trash. Two weeks before opening day, Justin and I decided to check one last camera. As we went through the pictures there wasn't anything i liked until we got to August 29th and the double beamed buck that i had found earlier in the month had exploded!! We were blown away! Hi-fives and plan for the hunt changed right then and there. This would be the buck that I hunt! Wednesday morning before the hunt rolled around and that was the morning I was going to pack into the area. As I parked the truck at 2am, the rain came dumping down! I waited for about an hour and it did not let up so I went back home and back to sleep. It wasn't till about 8am that it cleared up and I made my way back to where I was going to hunt. I got into the area, set camp up and went to glass. Didn't get much glassing done with the rain that rolled in wednesday evening. Nonetheless, I didn't turn up my target buck. Thursday morning came and still could not turn up my buck. I called Justin at about noon, who was going to pack in and meet me thursday night, to let him know how things were going. We made a back up plan in case I wasn't able to find my buck the remainder of thursday. Right at last light I made the phone call to let Justin know we had to go through with the back up plan. I was glassing the area where I had my buck on camera which was a little ways from where I actually found this buck in August and we could not see that hill/cut from where I was. At that point Justin had to re-pack to be ready to pack in and stay on a different ridge solo. Friday morning started with Justin leaving his truck at about 1am. My 5am alarm went off and I woke up to texts saying "in position and ready!" Quick breakfast and a fast jog over to the canyon for me and it was time to glass! I was seeing most of the bucks I had already found the previous days but not my target buck. Justin had been seeing a few does and a 70" type deer then I get the text at 0824 "I GOT DUB-T!!" A quick phone call and a good plan I was on my way over to Justin. He had the buck between 300 - 400 yards and bedded!! I got a message that the sun was getting close to him and I needed to hurry. Doing what I could I had finally made it over to Justin at about 10:00 and my buck was still bedded. I snuck over to where Justin was (he had cleared a nice little spot for me to bench up and shoot from) Got quick directions to where the buck was, laid down and found him in the gun while Justin got the range. 355 yards, dialed into strelok and corrected 3 MOA. Time to wait now. Fortunately we didn't have to wait long, It was about 10 minutes and DUB-T stood up, The rest from there was history!! Hi - fives and a few phone calls and we were on our way over to lay hands on this buck! We thought this buck would go somewhere around 100"s from the trail cam pics but after running the tape on him a few times the smallest i could get was 108 7/8" As I said before this was a great hunt/season with a great buddy!! Many more years of hurtin the population of big mature Coues bucks to come!! Next up is Justins wife Colleen! Early August August 29th
