azhoundcrazy replied to Umpqua's topic in Elk Hunting

We hunt up around China peak. Haven't done any scouting so hoping for the best. If any thing we will be packing in if we don't see anything the first few days

right on man those bobcats are really hard to catch anyways lol so you catch one of them your doing good. i have only really been hunting three of my six dogs but roscoe and rooster are doing good tho just havent been able to find good enough tracks for those pups to let them start them and build some confidence but roscoe did trail a lion with two of joes dogs and he stayed right with them and was putting in a great effort just never caught it. started it to late in the day and it got dark on us
-
no thats karen i did take roscoe on this on but about a week later joe and i caught a small tom together and that was roscoes first lion that he had been on and he did a really good job. he stared trailing it first and when all the other dogs ran by the tree he had it located by himself and all the dogs came back after they realized they over ran it

i work for two outfitters one that does only bear and lion hunts and one that does everything else

i have six hounds and they are family oriented dogs. they dont sleep in the house or come in the house but they run around the yard and love to play with kids. they also know when its time to work. having one dog makes it tough not impossible to catch game with as my lead dog catch four bears and two lions this year on his own. it makes it better having a couple for the fact that the game you are chasing doesnt want to tree and also i feel that dogs work of other dogs they all have different skills that work great as a pack. im no expert have only been in it for the last three years. this year i have hunted more then ever do to working for an outfitter in new mexico. i have learned a lot about working with dogs and being able to read dogs and figure out what they are doing and what participation efforts they are putting in to help the pack as a whole. my opinion is if you dont want a bunch of hounds running around i think 3 would be a good number to work with and be be able to catch game with. feel free to message me if you have any other questions. good luck and good hunting

they were in a den im guessing i caught her the next day off the same kill and when she was in the tree then you could really tell she had milk
-

just never was for the idea of using bait to hunt deer. i dont need to go to idaho i go to new mexico thanks for the offer tho. i dont hunt dogs cuz it is easier. im still yet to shoot anything under my dogs i like to work with dogs and watch the progression of young dogs turn into finished dogs. what do you get out of hunting over a bait?
