What rifle caliber is most common for coues deer hunting in AZ?
Elkhunter1 replied to THREEDFLYER's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
After all that I am gonna say one thing. I would go with a rifle big enough to take down a Bull Elk! I would shoot a 30-06 as this caliber has the widest range of weights and bullet styles. A good rifle in that caliber can accurately hit out to 800 yards. My brother has one he shoots 168grn out to 1000 yards consistently! My dad has dropped everything he shoots with his Smith-Corona 03-A3 shooting a 130grn Hornady. If you can afford to run multiple rifles then you could shoot the 243 for deer and any heavier caliber for elk. 411 yard cross canyon shot with a 10 mph crosswind. -
All I can do is say, good luck!

Amanda, most of my free time is spent in the hills or fabricating boxes, or Portable Shooter Stations.....mostly in the hills.

When my wife and I got married back in 96 our honeymoon was a three week trek all over the state camping. Our first stop was my Elk spot in 5BN. As we drove down Lake Mary road you could see a trail coming out of the trees across the meadow to the south of the road. After several days of talking her into it, I had her sitting with me up against some small pines down wind of the trail. As we sat there she had her left hand on the inside of my thigh, and a video cam in her right. She squeezed my thigh when she saw a skunk walking down two track about 35 yrds away.I told her he won't bother us as he walked by. A few minutes later she squeezed my thigh again and whispered there was something behind us. I turned a saw a yearling standing, neck stretched out about 15 yrds away. I told my wife not to move! In doing so the mother moved closer, like 5 yrds right behind the trees we were leaning on. 10 seconds later the cow Elk snorted and my wife jumped so high I thought she was taller than the trees. The only problem was she still had a hold of my thigh!!!! I think you can still see the claw marks. WHAT STORIES DO YOU HAVE?

Back in 2014 on the Aug. Archery opener I found myself sitting on a ridge high up on Mt Lemmon quietly listening for movement from any one of the four bucks I found that Tuesday before not far away. After around an hour I heard a noise above be, I sat still and intently listened. 10 minutes had passed then another noise but louder and CLOSER. Another 5 minutes passed then I heard something "running" down the ridge right at me, I turned to see a rock rolling past me, then another. I looked up the ridge to see A BIG BLACK BEAR looking right at me. He sidestepped reached over and rolled another large rock down at me! All in all that bear rolled 5 or 6 rocks at me coming as close a 2 feet!
