    30-06 For Long Range?

I have used a Winchester 70 in 30-06. I would go down to the rifle range and always shoot the ram silhouettes at 500 yrds off hand. With the right bullet, powder, brass, and primer you can get your riffle to accurately hit out past 500 yrds. If you hand load, you MUST measure every powder charge in every round.

    Trail Cam Box

Ya I stood there starring at the dimensions and the camera for about four hours before starting to draw it up. After starting the fabrication faze, I made changes no less than five times. When I thought I was in the home stretch my welder stopped working and deflated the momentum I had going. My welder had the power adjusting switch fail, after the necessary repairs, I was back in business. I also designed the tree bark pattern. I made three different stencils and sprayed the box in a four color coating. I love the challenge of taking an Idea someone has and creating what they envisioned. Thanks for your comments and I agree it is fun creating things.

Locked gate on state trust land

Matt Walton is the AZGFD land access coordinator for region 5. He works with USFS, State Land Dept. County Parks, and land lessee's to gain and or retain access to Public lands.

Locked gate on state trust land

Matt Walton and myself just got back a little while ago from the area in question. We drove all around the area checking gates and taking GPS readings of the locked gates and discussing all of the roads in the area. We also discussed the dangers of some of the access points to the area, we came to the same conclusion, the locked gate in question is the best point to get into the area. It would definitely be the safest one from the stand point of vehicular traffic. Matt told me he would talk to the unit officer as well as others to come up with a viable solution to the inherent dangers presented by the locked gate. AZGFD is and will always work with us hunters to resolve access issues when we give them accurate information and the time to complete the investigation as they may need to contact several federal, state, local agencies as well as private land lessee's.

Locked gate on state trust land

Interesting thought! I dont know much about the law but if there was a loss of revenue then them must be a cause for that loss and it still seems as if there is a gray area in the word "managing". "....while State Trust lands are managed for the benefit of 13 Trust beneficiaries, which include the public schools and prisons. The Land Department's trust management responsibilities include requiring a permit or lease and charging a fee for use of Trust land..." First thought, the 13 Trust beneficiaries does not include hunters as a group as per the following "State Trust Land is distinguished from the public land such as parks or national forests because all uses of the land must benefit the 13 Trust beneficiaries. Congress, in granting the State Trust Land, recognized the value of the land and the importance of providing support to the public schools and public institutions...." and the Annual Report - Fiscal Year 2009-2010 http://www.land.stat...neficiaries.htm . So if the state department deems it is in the best interest of the 13 trusties by locking gates to allow certain permitted groups that have paid fees for access then can? Second thought (Im stretching it), hunters paid a fee for their hunting license that permits access to state land and if some portion of the fees benefits the 13 trusties (not sure this matters since hunting license equals access independent of the fee), then I would claim the land department has numerous policies and practices which give big companies privileges not afforded the rest of the public. And just for good measure and raise some heads I would say that the state lands is in voilation of Arizona Constitution and federal Enabling Act by not managing for the highest and best use (ie, hunters that have near zero impact on the land). After we paid a fee! Pulled all this out of my butt!!!!! Sounds pretty good so far, I guess I could also say that, by not allowing hunters to access the area by way of the locked gate they (land Dept.) are forcing hunters to put themselves into harms way by forcing them to access the area from the interstate therefore substantially adding risk of a collision. Now I know from past experiences DPS would be "up-in-arms" over this situation.

Locked gate on state trust land

I just got back from working in Sierra Vista. I decided to stop and check on the locked gate. Well it's still locked. There is a new lock from AT&T and the Kinder Morgan lock is gone. And now for the cou-de-graw------- some body took the State Trust Sign off of the gate. NOW WHO WOULD DO THAT? I left a message with Matt Walton. I have yet to get any correspondence on the subject since I first contacted AZGFD.

    Alpen Optics

Three weeks ago I sent my Alpen 10x42's in to get them repaired. I just got them back today, or so I thought. They sent me a new pair. I was totally surprised by this. There was a convergence problem with them. I had several conversations with their service team in an effort to get them returned, they went beyond what I am used to by service teams. they have a customer for life.

Where do all the CouesWhitetail.com stickers go?

There are several 85730's on the map, near E Golf Links. I am guessing one of those is you. It didn't plot street addresses just general area of zipcode. I didn't think everyone would want their addresses listed so I went with the more general zip code. Ya, you are right. It wouldn't be too accepted if they pinpointed each house. I was just feeling left out. Thanks for your hard work!!!

    AZGF what are you thinking?

The survey for the archers is mandatory. While the rifle hunters can report their kills if they want!!!! You can't call this comparing apples to apples!!! IT'S A FACT THAT IT'S A GUESS AS TO HOW MANY DEER GET HARVESTED BY RIFLE HUNTERS IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA. You are correct there there is a mandatory requirement for archery, but archery hunters also get a non-mandatory questionare to fill out. When making a recommendation this non-mandatory information is what is used so that they are comparing like data. If you want to call this a guess you sure have that right but statistically it is valid data. So I will call this comparing apples to apples. Aaron It would be a complete injustice to the deer population for them not to use all the data at their disposal. Again if they want to get a complete accounting of the harvest they need to have a 100% reporting of ALL the hunting seasons. I know that in Tenn. you must not only report your harvest, you need to take it to the Tenn. DNR. Only after you have done that you can get another deer tag there. If that type of reporting was done here they might get a more complete accounting of the harvest and the final survivability rate at the end of the seasons. Now having said that, I am not saying they need to do this exactly as Tenn. DNR does, just do something similar.

    AZGF what are you thinking?

I am not telling them what to do, I merely questioned the rational to their decision to decrease bow season while increasing the general hunt tags. From the "average joe" hunters point of view, the numbers don't add up to a hill of beans.

    HA HA that's good!
  17. Elkhunter1

    AZGF what are you thinking?

I would believe they would look at the overall harvest numbers vs the target numbers. Isn't the idea to take the the target number from the units population, how it is done shouldn't matter, as long as it is legal.

    Be careful out there

This is a sad reminder that you never know what can happen out there! Tell someone where you intend to go, take plenty of water, and a cell phone! My family will pray for his safe return.

Locked gate on state trust land

That points out the Grey area in the law. The sign only states a hunting/fishing license is required for permission to gain access. It doesn't state you have to be actively hunting or fishing. The sign says written permission. Check the state website. All the information is there. From the official web site http://www.land.stat...upport/faqs.htm "Q: Why do I need a permit to go on State Trust land for recreation purposes and how do I obtain a recreational permit? Arizona State Trust lands are not "public lands", as are Federal lands under the management of the U.S. Forest Service or the Bureau of Land Management. Federal "public lands" are managed for the benefit and use of the public, while State Trust lands are managed for the benefit of 13 Trust beneficiaries, which include the public schools and prisons. The Land Department's trust management responsibilities include requiring a permit or lease and charging a fee for use of Trust land. Exceptions to this requirement are licensed hunters and fishers, actively pursuing game or fish, in-season, and certain archaeological activities permitted by the Arizona State Museum." So this means if you are scouting state trust land you better be hunting coyotes too Well i am always hunting rabits or something anyway.
