I have the Slik compact XL and love it, it is very lite. Perfect for packing. I have a pair 20x60's (not lite) that sits on top of it.

Great bull right there.

What's the craziest thing you have done while out hunting?
Elkhunter1 replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in The Campfire
Here is another one for ya: Way back when I was a wee lad, my brother and I went out at first light to our Dove pond. After the morning flight was over we headed home for breakfast. I had killed a slithering big friend and left him in the back room and went back out to hunt Quail and what ever else jumped out. We had a good day out in the field, however when we got home I was the first through the door. As I cleared the door I was hit with a broom, and mom was on the other end. She went in the back room to put some laundry into the dryer and was struck by the rattler I had forgot about. She looked at her ankle and saw blood then saw the snake and freaked out. It took her a few to see that his head was gone and the blood was his not hers. She stomped on us for over 30 minutes on the reasons not leave them in the back room on the floor. The next week I killed another one and bagged it and put it in the freezer, she didn't like that place either! -

i have a pig tag this year, first one. had one at 20 yards and i was full draw. let it walk when the realization of cleaning and eating it entered my head. think when i get the other 9 big game species here i'll go for a rodent. Ya the cleaning is the hardest part, I do love chasing and eating them.

I take mine and skin it wash really good, hang dry place in garbage bag set in old refer at 35deg. for about 14-18 days then butcher as you wish, place portions into vacuum bags and seal, then freeze. Cook at your leisure how you want. I make steaks and roasts out of most, except for the loins they get special treatment.

Once at band camp..... LOL No really way back when I was young my brother and I was working along a Mesquite flat running along a creek we found some pigs. After taking two shots I hit one and he ran off towards my truck. My brother and I headed to cut him off as he was headed to the drainage culvert under a set of train tracks. As he walked out into the open I shot him again and YES he did make it into the culvert. I bolted over the tracks and cut him off. My brother and I decided to shoot him with his arrows as they are longer back and forth until the pig was dead. We did this several times when I decided to hit the pig in the head with a big rock, he didn't move. "He's dead," I yelled, "I am going in after him." My brothers response was, "your crazy!" I wanted to get back on the pigs so he could fill his tag, so... with an arrow in my right hand and my Buck knife in the left I went in. I got close enough to poke him with the arrow, as I did this the pig spun around and bit the arrow in half. I was back pedaling in this 4ft diameter culvert, screaming "Sh!&, Sh!& he's still alive." As I was getting out I stabbed my self in the left knee, I buried the knife at least an inch, I was bleeding like a stuck pig, (pun intended). The moral of this story is (don't take a knife to a PIG fight) -

Yup! right of the Saguro -
I'm in the exact same situation. I just got my first bow, so it's going to be hard to draw the 9mm. Maybe if one charges me when I'm taking a leak I'll shoot it. What ammo you using in your 9mm? I reload Hornady 147grn XTP's

I just received a Winchester M1917 made for the Enfield company in Dec. 1917. All I got is the receiver and a match grade custom barrel. They also sent me a trigger and another piece. This will be a long rebuild but when it is done it will be a killing machine. It is chambered in 30-06 and my dads hand loads are Hornady 130grn soft points backed by 53grns of BalC-2 powder. Out of his 03A3 they run 3150fps and his riffle shoots 5 rounds inside a dime at 100 yards, hope my gun can match it. Looking forward to getting started with the build. -
The archer that dedicates the time and energy necessary to consistently put arrows down range at long distances is same archer that studies his prey and learns its movements and when is the best time to put an arrow down range. I personally know several archers that can and have taken several animals past 100 yards without needing a second shot. They practice every day at long and short distances. DON'T for one minute think you know what's best for everybody, or every situation unless you are there. This armchair quarterbacking is really getting old. I for one am visiting this site far less than I used too simply due to your unwarranted and negative comments on situations you know nothing about. Everybody needs to take step back and wait for the story to unfold BEFORE the comments start flying..........................................Thread is done in MY opinion. There are several people on here that don't agree with certain things being said or posted about with regards to many issues in the hunting world. To say i don't know what I'm talking about, just because i have a diff opinion than others , well i guess that's your opinion. I spend more time in the field than 95 percent on of the people on here , and have more experiences with a huge cross section of hunters in the field each year than most have in a decade. I say this not to brag in the least, but only to prove the point that i do have at least a clue to what i speak about with regards to hunting. I can't tell you how many times I've had guys that can shoot rifles or bows that were so superior to my skills it was almost embarrassing, but when it came time to shoot at a big animal couldn't shoot or where shaking to much to draw their bows in the moment. This is what i was referring too with my post, the mental impact of shooting at an animal instead of a target. This is a huge diff, so what did i say that i didn't know anything about here, and what offended you so much? Is it because i have a diff opinion. Practicing at shooting a target in a calm situation is diff than shooting at a animal in the field isn't it? When i say that practicing shooting at live deer would be the only real way to practice, i was talking about the mental side of things. Please tell me how else someone could test the mental side of shooting at animals instead of targets, cause if there is another way to sharpen the mental skills of shooting long ranges, I'm up for it!!! I respect your opinion also, but in my opinion and that comes from a ton of experience, i don't think it's right or respectful. Sorry if this hurts your feelings. Are there any other older issues you would like to rehash that i offended you with, feel free to vent some more. I wouldn't want you to stay away from the site cuase of my opinions. What else have i said in the past that offended you with , be specific please. My position with regard to this post or any other post ASKING for info on what somebody said or heard is the people that make rash judgments without knowing the facts of the particular hunt. I understand and respect your comments on the mental side of the hunt as I have been there. I just don't like it when others make comments without any facts as to the situation in question. I can agree with you, live fire exercises are as close to the real thing as one can get. I had posted earlier about Olympic shooting, one of my training exercises was slowing down my heart rate and to take the shot between heart beats. The others that I also mentioned has this same training. When you stand in front of hundreds if not thousands of spectators during the championships it is like the big buck standing in front of you. I am not disrespecting any person or their comments, I just want them to wait until the story comes out with the facts before one JUMPS to conclusions and conjecture. Thanks for your understanding and not going off 1/4 cocked like some have. You sir have gained more of my respect with your civil reply, Stephen Forrest

take both I probably will but it's been a long time since I took a pig with a handgun.

I would love to take pigs and deer with a 1858 Confederate navy. One day I will get me one. Right now I just got the action and barrel to a Win. M1917 in 30-06. It will take me some time to build this gun and get it ready to kill.

I just can't decide weather to kill with my bow or my 9mm.

Gave me a laugh. We could apply this here....

LMAO LMAO every time I watch it. -
I have said this before and I will say it again: have any of you shot collegiate archery? We used a competition long bow set to 40 or 45 lbs. We shot Olympic rules and distances. Outdoor distances started at 25 meters and went out to 90 meters. NOW if we did this with a recurve bow back in the 80's and consistently shot 280+ rounds out of 300 with the bullseye being an 8" target, then with the modern compound bows we shoot today anybody that practices at those yardages can ethically shoot that shot..... I understand some of you don't think it is ethical, maybe not for you but to some it is. We practice long shots not to constantly take them, but to be able to if the situation presents itself. Do we even know if this mythical shot took place? With all the bashing we may never know! Lets stop this before it gets completely out of control and this site becomes what others ARE, the site nobody wants to go to. PLEASE STOP THE PRE-POST BASHING BASED ON RUMOR....PLEASE!!
