Got my mount back!
matthewp45 replied to matthewp45's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Casey you must like those bug eyed unatural looking mounts. Clay did this mount to a picture I took of the deer before I shot it. It is exactly like the picture with his ear kicked back and all. I am with Josh on this one. I think he looks great. It is just refreshing to get a mount back and being 100% satisfied. -

RCBS is what I use and it hasn't failed me yet. I would go with a kit as well. I would definetly recomend a digital scale to go along with the kit. Follow all of the recipes correctly and do one thing at a time. Before you know it you will be a reloading fool.

long long distance shooting
matthewp45 replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Last year I shot my elk at 638 yards. I do not tell people that face to face because I know they won't believe me. I load all of my own bullets and shoot 4-5 times a week. The only scopes I use are the Burris ballistic plex scopes. I have a 3X9 on my .280 and a 4.5X14 on my 300. I practice 200-540 yards. The elk dropped right in his tracks. The bullet entered high lung and then totally severed his spinal cord (I was shooting up hill). In order to shoot these distances you must have an ultra steady rest and total confidence in your shot or risk injuring an animal. I also shot my coues last year @ 298 yards and to me it was a tougher shot than the elk. -

Now he is bowhunting on the San Carlos Reservation on a $30,000 elk hunt. A friend of mine is helping the other guy that has the other tag. What a life. -
Need Help Scoring this Carp

He has been in a few times. He is definetly a resident buck. This area holds some huge bucks. There are some bucks in here that are real wide as well. My buddy killed a small three point that was 33inches wide, weird looking buck. -

I have already emailed it to Dwayne Adams. We will see what he has to say. We will be glassing a ton for this guy. When we find him I will get some video. -

I have a rifle tag in November. If I can't get him then, I will try in December and January. I have a lot of work ahead of me. -
Need Help Scoring this Carp

He is definetly a muley no questions about it. The only thing in this area is mule deer and big horn sheep. I am 100% sure he is a muley. He has been living in 110 degree temps all summer that is why you might think his color and markings are off. Thanks to everyone for your guesses and keep them coming please. -

It should be very easy. You can get another cape from a friend or hunting partner. Second choice would be to buy a cape from your taxidermist. A cape and horns is all you need to have him mounted.

I agree with wklman.

I am guessing Unit 45 was a joke. The kofas are known for their monster whitetail though. All of you out of state hunters need to start putting in for 45a,b,c. Hidden secret whitetail spot.JK

Great job. That is great buck and I am sure it is greatly deserved.

That should be on a poster!! Brain overload.

All of your equipment seems just fine. The most important thing to do is get out and glass, glass, glass. Get use to finding these little grey guys. Dwayne Adams has great book out called "How to Hunt Coues Deer". This book even gives you an overview of 36B. You read this book and get out in the field you will learn quick. Good Luck. You can get the book on this website.

Biggest 5x5 Elk ever!
matthewp45 replied to 257stw's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
That wasn't by chance in unit 22. I have video of a huge 5X5 from last year. Looks exactly like that. -
I personally like the new bonded bullets made by Hornady (Innerbond) and Nosler (Accubond). These bullets for me are the best out there. Great accuracy, penetration and bullet wieght retention. I have killed an elk with the innerbonds and a coues with the accubond. The accubond broke both shoulders completely and left an exit hole the size of a half dollar. The innerbond hit the elk high lung and completely severed the huge spinal cord. I have loaded SST and have seen them explode on contact on a coues. It was a 7mm 140grain. Hit the coues in the shoulder and exploded did not exit the animal. This is just personal experience. With this info and 50 cents you can get a cup of coffee.
