70 inch would be awesome for a first buck- don't focus on numbers on your first coues hunt- try to focus on getting a good hunt and experience out of it and take whatever buck makes your finger itch. In 36A the farther you hike the closer you get to another group of hunters! Glass pockets in little hills and washes and your odds of finding a 70 inch buck becomes greater however your odds of seeing a buck is reduced since there's not as many deer in the flats as there are in the hills.

Most people will agree with me- this unit is hard to locate mature bucks in. Mature bucks do not live in the mountains in 36a, they live in the flats. I've found a few bucks in the mountains that were 3-5 years old but its not that common, it's easier to locate mature bucks in most other units in southern az. You will see large, equal sized crowds at all mountain ranges in the unit and Sierrita mtns being the most populated. Scouting is a must, if anything find an area where there's lots of coues in the flats that is glassable from the hills. Good news is you have the oct hunt which is the easier hunt to do in 36a, the unit is easy to find 50-80 deer per day with several spikes and forks. I've hiked to top of Colorados and once you reach the top you can see the other side where there's alot of hunters- it seems that the mountains are covered pretty good and the big bucks have no where to hide but the flats. good luck man

Mule Deer, Coues and Cross Breeding
elkhunter replied to m77's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
The tail will be the sole identification of the deer, if you have a mule deer tag and shoot a coues that has a muley rack and a coues tail you will get in trouble. A feller shot a 180lb coues deer down south and it had a Muley rack and ears and body but it had a whitey butt, I think it scored 130 or so -
Actually I've heard and believe the deformity will happen on the opposite side of the injury and is typically with leg injuries. I've also heard that there are parasites that can cause deformities as well. Some deformities are just a genetic trait and that can and does get passed down to offspring. We watch bulls grow every year in the same areas and it's fairly common to see genetic traits being handed down. It's neat seeing a new bull come of age and knowing who his daddy was! JIM> Jim is correct, as a wildlife biologist on studies, if a bull is injured on his right side, if he has an abnormal antler it will be on the opposite side of the injury, it is similar to ur brain, the left side of ur brain controls the right side of your body and vise versa

How close would you let it get?
elkhunter replied to huntjunkie's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Having worked in alaska and co workers been attacked by black and grizz bears, we having a saying, shoot now and ask questions later, 15 yards and walking sideways is the closest I will let a bear near me, -
If you get a pic of the thief it will not help you much, cops will not run any kind of check on the photos, might as well as make sure they get blue ink in their face or lose some fingers. I think someone will come up with a tracking device for these cameras, it depends on who has enough guts to invest money in a product like that
