New rules restrict use of rifles, pistols in metro hunt units for public safetyPHOENIX – Hunters rejoice, you now have access to approximately 1 million acres of public and state trust lands within municipal boundaries this hunting season, but there are regulation changes that relate to these new opportunities and public safety that hunters need to know. These opportunities required amending the 2011-12 Arizona Hunting and Trapping Regulations, as well as the 2011 Pronghorn Antelope and Elk Hunt Regulations because the changes to state law became effective after these publications were distributed. The proposed hunt guidelines, which would set the framework for the annual hunting regulations for upcoming seasons, will be considered by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission during the Saturday, Aug. 27 portion of its meeting in Phoenix at 8 a.m. The commission may vote to approve the guidelines or direct the department to consider changes and/or new opportunities in the guidelines. The Arizona Game and Fish Commission will hold a telephonic meeting at 4 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 12. The meeting is to consider amending some elk hunt restrictions due to the implementation of legislative changes enacted through SB 1334. The limited-opportunity general elk hunts 3071 through 3092 inadvertently included note 37 in a recent amendment process (Saturday, Aug. 6) that added restrictions to hunting on private lands. The Arizona Game and Fish Department has posted the 2011 Sandhill Crane Regulations, which includes the drawing information for limited hunts at www.azgfd.gov/rules. Paper hunt-permit applications are now being accepted by mail only and must be received by Aug. 30, 2011. Applications can be mailed to either P.O. Box 74020, Phoenix, AZ 85087-1052, or 5000 W. High Country Hummers Festival canceled due to Wallow FireDue to the high potential for flash flooding down Rudd Creek in the aftermath of the Wallow Fire, a large part of which goes through the Sipe Wildlife Area, the Arizona Game and Fish Department has made the very difficult decision to cancel the High Country Hummers Festival for 2011. The decision to cancel this very popular event did not come lightly, but was necessary in the best interests of public safety. View the full article -
