Turkey Hunting and Calling Seminar Wednesday April 5th 6PM at Mesa Sportsman's
Little Creek Calls replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Turkeys!
Just a reminder the seminar in Mesa at Sportsman’s Warehouse is tonight at 6PM. Hope to see some of you there. It should be a fun night. Also just a little clarification for the seminar on Saturday at 1PM in Show Low, It is not at Sportsman’s in Show Low but at the Game and Fish office in Pinetop. -
Where is the best place to buy youth camo clothing? I am wanting to get my 6 year old set up so he can go with me in the field this spring on my turkey hunt and not just hang out at camp again like he has the past 3 years. I have looked at Bass Pro, Cabelas and Sportsmans but there is almost no selection.

Little Creek Calls replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Turkeys!
There is also a seminar in Show Low on Saturday the 8th from 1-4 at Sportsman's taught by Jim Warren. I am going try to make it up and bring a few calls. -
He is your normal average kid. When he goes to the doctor he is usually in the 60% for height and weight for his age.

Last year when we went to Kansas we were also told to treat our clothes with permethrin. Gators around our boots and pants were also recommended to keep them from crawling up your boots and onto your legs. In the three days we hunted my dad and I never found a tick on us. My guide didn’t use gators and was finding ticks on his legs every day we hunted. Also the turkey will have lots of ticks on them so no over the shoulder photos, Also let the guide carry the birds back in there vest so you don’t get ticks from the birds in your vest. One more thing, when climbing into a blind in the afternoon let the guide get in first, about half of the blinds we got into in the afternoon had wasp or hornets that had taken up residence in them and my guide was stung several times in different blinds before I got in. After the first person is in they usually leave quick and had no more issues after the initial sting. We never had problems in the morning with blinds. It is defiantly a different style hunt than public land here in AZ but still a great and fun hunt.

Here is a picture of the call I donated for the Prescott NWTF banquet happening this Saturday 3-18. The call is a slate calling surface over a slate soundboard in a Arizona Walnut pot. The striker is also AZ walnut with a walnut dowell.

Looks like some nice spurs on that bird. Lighter tips on the tail, my guess would be a Rio.

NWTF East Valley Toms Raffle for a mini bike
Little Creek Calls replied to 125coues's topic in Conservation Group Events
My oldest son was really sad when this bike sold at your banquet and we didn't win, so I better pick up a chance in this raffle. The sate chapter website link says "Not found , error 404". I guess I will have to give Kathi a call. My boys will be keeping there fingers crossed. -
It was nice seeing you again Mark and Sean. My wife my two boys and I all had a great time. Thanks Mark and tomgobbler and everyone who volunteered and everyone who donated to make this a great banquet. Sean tell you son thanks for drawing my ticket on the shotgun. TJ we missed you and your wife, last year was a lot fun having you at our table.

Here are a few pictures of the calls I am entering into the national call making contest this year. Just finished making them and feel they turned out great. I will be taking my family back to the NWTF convention in Nashville where the calls will be judged and then sold on auction.

2017 National Call Making Contest
Little Creek Calls replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Turkeys!
Thanks Bill. It’s going to be a good trip. Going to the Convention, taking my kids to watch the youth calling competition catch a few seminars visit a few booths and see how my calls do in the call making contest. We are also going to the Opry, catch a show at the blue bird café, visit the country music hall of fame, the Parthenon, and a civil war battlefield. -
We fly out to Nashville on Thursday morning as well. Been looking forward to this trip for awhile. You should have bought tickets and joined us Bill.

If he doesn't want it it sounds just about right for one of my boys.

2017 National Call Making Contest
Little Creek Calls replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Turkeys!
The winning calls are sold in a special live auction. All other calls are sold in a silent auction. There are usually 600 to 900 calls in the competition so as you can imagine they sell fairly cheap with that many calls being sold at one time. Usually well below normal value. A lot of times call makers buy their own calls back to resale because of the low prices. If you want me to bid on one of my calls for you just let me know what you are interested in. All of the money goes to the NWTF. The call on the left is Mesquite with crystal calling surface. The call in the middle is Pecan with a copper calling surface. The call on the right is Shoestring Acacia with slate calling surface over a slate soundboard. -
I am taking my wife and kids back to the NWTF National Convention this year too. Hope to see you there.

Congratulations. I hunted Kansas last year and had a great time. Looks like El Dorado is just outside of Wichita. Do you know what species she will be hunting? (rios, easterns or hybrids)

Thanksgiving Crane
Little Creek Calls posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I had the opportunity to hunt sandhill crane with my dad just before Thanksgiving. Had a great time and we were both able to get all of our birds. Made it back home Thanksgiving afternoon and had crane for dinner Thursday night. Had the normal Thanksgiving dinner on Friday with the family. The crane turned out better than expected, it really is the ribeye of the sky.- 16 replies

Thanksgiving Crane
Little Creek Calls replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Treat them like a nice beef steak only add a little oil or butter because they don't have any fat. Cook them hot and fast, Just don't over cook them and dry them out. You won't be disappointed. -

Iron sights coues deer, pretty impressive. -
I quit buying Levi's a few years back when they changed the style or cut of their 569 loose fit to low rise tight thigh jeans. Carhartt and Cinch for me now.

Thanksgiving Crane
Little Creek Calls replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
We sit the large pivots to hide our outline then we don't have to deal with ground blinds. We have full decoys and use calls to draw draw their attention to the decoys. We try to hunt cut corn fields the preferred food of choice for the cranes. It took us 2 years to figure it out (best setup of decoys and when to shoot) but we are pretty good at it now. This year the overall numbers of birds was way down from last year, I assume because the warm fall up north and they just haven't migrated in fully yet. I talked to farmers in all the different areas before the hunt and everyone said the same thing "the birds haven't showed up yet." -

Pictures? Removable or fixed chokes? Where are you located? -
Looks like game and fish should revise their description.
