Just a reminder for all those who live on the east side of town I will be doing a Turkey seminar Tomorrow night (4/5) at the Mesa Sportsmans Warehouse from 6PM to 8PM. I would recommend this seminar or the one at the Phoenix store on Friday to all new to turkey hunting, to those who have hunted without a lot of success, to those interested in getting into turkey hunting and to those experienced turkey hunters looking to get excited for the upcoming hunts.

I am doing a seminar on Thursday at Sportsman’s Warehouse in Mesa at 6PM. If you live in town come on over and I will bring a map and share a few spots with you.

If you have a boat I would recommend Crescent lake. Last year was great and from what I have heard it didn’t winter kill so it should be even better this year. If you are just fishing from shore Big lake would be better. As far as access goes it’s a gamble but game and fish try to have the roads open for the youth turkey hunt that start that same weekend.

English Pointer Puppies
Little Creek Calls posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Trying to figure out if there is any interest and if we are going to breed our English Pointers next cycle. We have Line breed English Pointers through Champion blood lines like Elhew Fibber Magee and Hall of fame Champion Elhew Snakefoot and others. It is genetically possible to get liver to but guessing on their litters the puppies should be black or orange. They should also have dark noses. Both Parents were pick of their litter from one of the top Kennels in the country for English Pointers. The female is Orange and is the most bird crazy dog I have ever seen. The male is black and has a great gentle demeanor. It took us 6 months to convince the owner of the kennel to sale us the male, he was planning on keeping him for breeding. The puppies would be ready sometime around June and would be $350 for males and $400 for females. Let me know if you have any interest. -

Some of you may be aware that the price of raw tungsten has just about doubled in the last 30 days. That has already had an effect and will have an even more profound effect on the price and availability of shotshells that many of us shoot. Now might be the time to buy shot for your upcoming turkey hunts before things get to crazy.

I am leaving in the morning for Nashville and the NWTF convention. I am entering calls I made in the national call making contest in three different categories (slate, glass and aluminum). This is the first time I have been to the convention and entered calls in the national contest. Should be a lot of fun, I will get to meet and attend seminars from all the big companies like Primos, Mossy Oak, Realtree and others. I will have a report with pictures of the calls I entered when I get back.

Well I had a great time at the NWTF Convention. I got to meet a lot of famous hunters from TV like most of the guys from the Primos crew, Knight and Hale, Ronnie Cuz Strickland from Mossy Oak, Michael Waddell from Bone Collector and more. I was able to attend seminars put on by most of them. The one I really enjoyed most was Cuz Strickland, he is a good ol boy with no ego and didnt have to brag about what he knows or has accomplished. Primos seminar was fun, and the knight and Hale seminar was very informative. I was very disappointed with Michael Waddell. He was 20 minutes late. It was by far the busiest seminar and standing room only and he chose to talk about how hard he worked to get his job, his sons music career and politics instead of turkey hunting. The national calling contest were fun to go and see. In the national call making contest there were 540 entries in the hunting division and I didnt win this year. It was my first time and learned a lot and am more prepared for next year. Based on the amount of play marks on calls after the judging I think 2 of my calls made it to the final round of judging. While in Nashville we got to see some great shows (Diamond Rio, Montgomery Gentry, Josh Turner and more) eat some great food and had a great time. Here is a picture of the calls I entered in the call making contest.

That’s enough material to tie and fish nothing but elk hair caddis and stimulators for any fisherman’s lifetime.

I shot a Buffalo on Ted Turner’s ranch in Montana back in 2002 for less than what a AZ resident bull tag cost now. It was a 3 year old Bull and not the trophy bull hunt (5 years and older). It still looks great on the wall and is the best tasting game I have ever shot.

Mesquite Slate Turkey Call

Results came out today, anyone need a new call? I got lucky and will be hunting unit 1 first hunt. -
To get everyone excited for the spring drawing results that should be coming out in the next day or two, I thought I would offer a couple of custom turkey calls. These are Slate over glass calls in an Arizona grown Mesquite pot. Both calls are handmade by me at my shop in Queen Creek, AZ. They have 9 equally spaced holes in the bottom of the pot as opposed to the standard 8 for a little extra volume on those windy Arizona spring days. Each call has been matched for sound to the striker that sounds best. The result is a deep full sounding yelp with great rollover and perfect purrs and clucks. I am offering $5 off my normal price and will also donate $5 from each call to CouesWhitetail. The spring draw special is $40 Each (normally $45). Good luck to all with the draw.

I will be doing two or three 15 min presentations this weekend October 29th on turkey hunting and turkey calling at an outdoor show in Cottonwood. It is being held at the Accelerated Learning Charter School. The address is 320 S. Main Street, Cottonwood, Az 86326. There will be other hunting presentations and lots of fly fishing and fly tying presentations and demonstrations. It will run from 10AM to 2PM. There will be raffles and auctions for prizes like fully guided fishing trip on the San Juan, custom built fly rods, boxes of custom tied fly’s, framed artwork and more. Everyone is invited and welcome to attend. It will be 100% kid friendly. That is the point of the show to get kids involved in the outdoors.

How I have been spending my summer...

Did you do any post fire work in the Chiricahuas? How did the fire impact the birds? -
Here are a few pictures of my latest turkey call that I just finished making for the NWTF Banquet on Saturday. It is Slate over glass in a hand turned Arizona walnut pot. The striker head is also AZ walnut with a walnut dowel. I am not sure if it will be a raffle item or an auction item. Good luck to all who will be attending.
-
I dropped it off last night and they said it will be part of the silent auction.
-
It sounds great, purrs are amazing and it has a nice deep yelp with great turn over. Pick it up and try it out on Saturday. I do make calls and sell them if you don’t win it. I will not be able to attend this weekend so grab one of my business cards and give me a call or just shoot me a PM if you are interested in having a call made.

Does anyone know if this will affect the over the counter youth hunts next spring? I have some friends that were hoping to bring their kids next year and join our camp.
