Turkey Seminar Tonight At Mesa Sportsman's
Little Creek Calls replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Turkeys!
It is from 6 pm to 8 pm tonight. -
I just finished up the first batch of calls to be used at my upcoming seminar. I will be working on more in March. They will be used by all attending and will be available for purchase after the seminar. It will be a turkey calling seminar Thursday April 4 at 6PM at Sportsman’s Warehouse in Mesa.

A good friend of mine that will be doing the pot call training at the seminar has hunted turkey in 6a a few times and can defiantly give you some tips after the seminar.
-
I have not had any problem with that in any place I have hunted. Maybe its because turkeys are not measured by B&C or P&Y. A mature tom is a mature tom and the only difference might be 1” in beard length or ¼” in spur length or 1 or 2 pounds and is not visibly noticeable until after the bird is dead. Occasionally someone will already be in a spot I want to hunt but you can just go to another spot and come back later. Last year the bird I shot in AZ was being hunted by someone else in the afternoon but I came back later in early evening after they were gone and got my bird. My experience turkey hunting in AZ so far has led me to believe that most people in the woods turkey hunting don’t know what they are doing or how to call effectively.

I just finished the second batch of mouth calls for the seminar at Sportsman's Warehouse on April 4th. There will be three styles to choose from. The first picture was sent to me from a friend who used the call I made to kill this turkey in Nebraska last year. I also killed a bird in AZ last year and called another bird in for a youth hunter using this style call. It is my new favorite mouth call. The other two styles are also great calls. They are the ones I learned on and have killed many birds with these calls. I made these calls with same materials and call press that all the major call companies are using with just a few minor variations. I use a different frame than most to get a thinner finished call and a more consistent stretch on the latex. The result is a thinner call that helps avoid that gag reaction for those with smaller mouths. I also measure the stretch of the latex on each each call made for the best sound and consistent calls every time. Every one who attends will get one and receive training on use.

I would prefer you pre-register because I will need to bring enough calls for everyone to use. I need to know how many to make and bring. Will we still take unregistered walk in’s but will hand out mouth calls to all who registered first. By not registering you take a chance of running out and not receiving a free mouth call. I was going to charge $2 to cover cost of materials for the mouth calls but changed my mind and the mouth calls will be a gift from me for all in attendance while supply’s last. To register send me a pm with your name and the names of those attending with you and I will add you to the list. I need to get in to Sportsman’s and get a sign up registration started there as well. Vowell, Someone else needed that Hawaiian wood call (robusta eucalyptus) as well and it was sold yesterday. I will be making 4 or 5 more in March and should have some available at the seminar. The seminar special for Pot calls will be $35 that’s $10 off and a great deal for a custom handmade call.

I am hoping to have some boxes available for sale at the seminar. As far as recommendations go try all the different calls and buy the one you are the most confident using. Some people like Box calls some people like pot calls some people like mouth calls and everyone will give you a different answer. When I first started I always carried a box but didn’t have much confidence using it so I would always use pot calls and push pin’s instead. I finally had to force myself into using only the box call one year to get some confidence in it and the first morning I called in two Jakes that came all the way in and were picking at my shoe laces. I passed on them but ended up shooting a mature gobbler later that season with the box. I now don’t hesitate to use the box or any of the calls in my vest. One recommendation I would give you is learn to use a mouth call and practice with it. Most turkeys I have killed last sounds heard came from mouth calls. I might use other calls to start or locate turkeys but when they are close it is hard to beat the no movement and variable volume of a mouth call. Also don’t overlook the push pin call. It is the easiest to operate and hardest to screw up. I called in my first bird using a push pin.

I normally charge $45 for pot calls but will have a seminar special for those in attendance.

I will take them if you still have them. PM sent.

I like the Primos Truth series Turkey videos. They do sometimes try to promote new products but they are not full of loud music and let you hear calling setups and talk about things every 3 or 4 hunts. They also come out with a new 2 1/2 hour DVD every year. If you can find some of the older ones they are a little better (11-18)(1-10 are only on VHS). Of all the turkey videos I have purchased they are the best.

I will think about it and look into it. I will let you know in a day or two. I looked into it and thought about it and I am going to have to pass on doing one in Tucson this year. Maybe next year.
-
There are a good number of birds in both units. Most of the captures for relocations to other units come from 35A & 35B. I went on a capture a few years ago and we caught close to 40 birds in one net but still missed more than half the flock. I have hunted 29 for leftover deer the last 3 years and there are birds everywhere and we are seeing more turkey every year even after the fire. East side (east turkey creek) west side (pinery canyon) and south side (rucker canyon) even on top (rustlers park). You should have no problem in either unit.

Is there anyone else that would be interested in attending if I did a seminar in Tucson?

We are going to do a registration with a $2 registration fee to cover the cost of the mouth call that you will receive and to give me an idea of how many calls I need to bring. But since we don’t have that up and running yet anyone that sends me a PM with the names of those who will be attending and there email address I will add their names to the registration list at no charge. I will offer this until I get the registration worked out with Sportsman’s Warehouse. Again this is for a turkey calling seminar Thursday April 4 at 6PM at Sportsman’s Warehouse in Mesa.

I will be doing a seminar the end of March or the first part of April. It will be different than seminars I have attended or put on in the past in that I will get call’s into the hands of all those who attend to use and practice with. I will also do a mouth call training and everyone will receive a mouth call to use and keep and instruction on use. There might be a $2 registration fee to cover the cost of materials to make the mouth calls (which is still cheaper than any mouth call you can buy). The seminars I have done and attended in the past have mostly been talking about turkey hunting, safety, calling, equipment and tips. After the last one I did I got to thinking I would have really benefited from a hands on interactive training when I was learning to turkey hunt. There will probably be an intro all together and then breakout into smaller groups for hands on instructions with pot calls, box calls, mouth calls and tips in hunting. Then back together for a final Q & A. I will supply all calls needed for training. It will probably take place at Sportsman’s in Mesa. I will try to finalize a date this week and then maybe start a pre-registration.

Weatherby PA-08 12 gauge Shotgun
Little Creek Calls replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Classified Ads
Reduced from $300 to $275. -
I have a Weatherby PA-08 12 gauge Upland pump shotgun for sale. It has a wood stock and a 28” barrel. It comes with 4 chokes (turkey, full, modified and improved). I have added Hi-Viz fiber optic turkey sights. This gun has only been fired 8 times, 4 to pattern it and 4 to kill 4 turkeys. The reason I purchased this gun was to hunt turkey with and leave with my brother in Hawaii so I didn’t have to pay extra baggage fees and deal with the hassle of flying with a gun (witch I did before buying the new gun). Anyways wouldn’t you know it a year after buying the new shotgun my brother moves from Hawaii and I don’t need another shotgun here in AZ. This gun is in perfect new condition. I will post pictures later. I paid $340 for it plus added a $40 turkey choke and $35 sights. Asking $300 $275

Here are a few pictures. -
Look for any major brand with interchangeable chokes. Aftermarket 2 point adjustable sights will help with focus and extend your range. Also look for shorter barrels (20” to 24”), they will be lighter and easier for kids to hold and swing. Study’s on modern shotguns and ammo have shown you reach max velocity at 20”. Most of the new turkey specialized guns are now shorter barrels. I switched 4 or 5 years ago from a 28” to a 24” and I would never pack a 28” for turkey again.

2012 Muzzy Buck
Little Creek Calls replied to 3Coues3's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
Great whitetail with a muzzleloader. Glad to see the knight put to good use again. It did the trick for me a few years back on a 6 x 6 bull elk.
