As opposed to now, when you buy it in September it expires 4 months later on December 31? How are you worse off by getting an extra 8 months from the license? Since permit/tags cannot be printed on a printer in their current format, I assume that there will still be a license dealer network. You got it wrong. It doesn’t start until 4 months later. You buy it to put in for the next years spring hunts. I get a full 365 days out of my hunting and fishing license every time. I also never have to worry about when did I buy it last year and is it expired.
-
Just buy the license on June 1. That will cover the draw in June, October and the following year for the February draw Hopefully they allow you to pick the start date for the license then you just pick Jan 1 and there will be no change. I guess I will figure it out later this month when I buy my 2014 license for the spring draw.

The thing I don’t like about the 365 license is I always buy a license in September for the spring draw which means it will expire in September before the fall deer and elk hunts. Is this expiring license going to be a problem when applying for fall hunts? I guess it’s just time to buy a lifetime license and be done with it.

Here is the cow calls I have. The picture is Orange. I have 3 Orange 4 Green and 3 Black. $6 dollars and comes with a lanyard. I can turn a piece of walnut for an extra $6. The call is easy to take apart and dry when the reed gets wet from use and starts sticking.

The bitter flavor comes from the wood smoldering and not getting enough oxygen and then leaving creosote behind. Smoke from wood or charcoal for smoking can range from bluish, to white, to gray, to yellow, brown, and even black. Blue smoke particles are the smallest and is the most desirable for smoking. Darker gray or black smoke will leave behind creosote and be bitter to the taste. The amount of oxygen changes the combustion and color of the smoke. The smoker I use has a fan that regulates the air flow and does not leave creosote and also turns the smoker into a convection cooker with the moving air. Before my current smoker I used an electric and also a charcoal smoker and had mixed results depending outside conditions.

I could fire up the smoker. Do you have a recipe or method in mind? I have never smoked tuna before. What type of wood were you wanting to use? I usually hear of people using Alder for fish but not sure about tuna. I could pick up whatever type you were wanting to use. I have a high end pellet smoker, 100% wood fired and can smoke and hold any temp from 100 to 600 degrees. Set the temp and the smoker does the rest of the work.

Nice Birds. Did you use dogs for the Grouse? Seen a few grouse while hiking, hit one with the truck once while driving down the highway. -

Looking for my first real turkey call. suggestions?
Little Creek Calls replied to bowhuntaz1's topic in Turkeys!
Joe slaton from mother load game calls makes a nice one piece Neal cost style checked box at good price. If you are wanting the best try Albert Paul and marlin watkins but you will pay a lot more for them. Hope this helps. -

What you have pictured is half moon box call. I think a one piece or a glued box sounds a lot better. The art work looks nice but I don't really like the sound of a half moon. -
I think I would much rather have some one sit in my stand than take it down and put it back up.

Some of the older made in the USA (California) Powell fly rods are harder to come by and are great casting rods. There fly rods are now made in China and only offer one fast action model in various sizes and weights. They are more concerned with bass rods now and it won’t surprise me if in a year or two they are not making fly rods any more. I can’t tell from the picture but it looks a little like it might be a custom build from a Powell blank. If it was built by Powell then it’s a good deal on a harder to find rod. If it is a custom build it all depends on the builder and components used but still a good asking price. This would be a great rod for any stream or river in Arizona except the Colorado. Also a must have book for fly fishing in AZ.

If you are wondering on what units have the most birds according to regs and permits available it would be 1, 6A, 12A, 23, & 27.

In the spring Turkey get enough water from what they eat that they can go over a week without coming to water. Do they come in, yes occasionally but not as frequent as in the fall. For me water holes are a good place to look for sign to see if there is a flock in a general area and to get an idea of what type of birds are in a particular flock by looking at tracks and droppings. Also turkeys are basically moving all day with the roost area as a common start and finish point. They easily cover a 5 or 6 mile loop in a day maybe more depending on available food.

Have the WT in southern units droped yet?

A few weeks ago we saw 3 MD bucks together. A 3 point with one antler, a nice 4 point with both and the third had lost both. -
Like most everyone has said the best time for locator calls is before sunrise. I have not had much luck in AZ or NM with them in the middle of the day. I have heard some people swear by hawk, woodpecker and peacock calls but I have tried them all and come up empty handed. For locating them in the afternoon try some excited cutting, or just be out in the woods hiking and listening and occasionally calling. A flock of turkey is fairly noisy and they do call in the middle of the day you just can’t hear them if you are in your truck or back at camp. As far as morning locator calls use owl, crow, elk, coyote, gobbling or any other loud noise. Try to keep it short so you don’t miss the answer. If you are not seeing fresh sign keep hiking or try some place new. They move to abundant available food sources and might vary from spring to fall. In the fall they tend to focus on acorns and hoppers and in the spring they like fresh sprouted grass and insects. Hope this helps.

Don’t worry it’s not over. It doesn’t end until the last week or two of May when all the hens start sitting on their clutch of eggs. The weather might affect their daily calling excitement but the breeding and egg laying is determined by daylight hours and not the weather. In many different years of hunting and weather it doesn’t matter if there is still snow or if it is dusty dry and hot and not a drop of water anywhere they start and end there cycle around the same time each year. Keep at it and good luck.

Here is a little tip for all the mouth call users. In the past I have bought plastic or metal tone savers to put between the reeds between use to keep the reeds from sticking together. They cost $5 or $6 for around 10. From now on I will buy smaller standard sized paper clips and get 1,000 call savers for $5. With a little bending and modification a single clip can even separate all reads of a 3 reed call (used to take two tone savers).

I am interested. Its hard to find a bow with my 32" draw. How does it shoot?
