I also have friends that refer to them as dog deer, dink deer, and jackalopes. Shiras I haven't ever hunted eastern whitetail, but I have been back east several times and seen more deer dead on the roads in a couple of days than I have seen in my entire life in AZ, so I wouldn't say mensa.

picture comparison
KGAINES replied to azhuntnut's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
The picture of the live elk is to far away for me to be sure, but they do look similar. I am sure there are brothers and cousins in the area so it could be a different bull, but then again you never know. -
Do a search of salt and I would bet you will get your answer, there have been several topics on this. Welcome to cw.com.

I agree 5yearcoueshunter, I haven't ever had a muley just stand there with me following them, they are not stupid, but the ones Shiras described sure sound like hand fed deer that are used to people.

I don't know where the term carp referring to mule deer came from but, quite a few people have made the same analogy as Ernesto, it was discussed on here a few years ago to under another topic. I don't think anybody is trying to degrade the mule deer, I would bet a lot of these guys have one of the kaibab hunts as a first choice and follow up with coues hunts, but there is no need for political correctness when referring to deer, there is way to much pc to begin with, and besides its all in jest, we are all blessed to be able to hunt so there is no need to bicker over what somebody called a deer. Good Luck and God Bless. Besides I have a muley tag this year so I gotta talk nice about them.

That's who I would have voted for, I hope it makes your job a little easier Amanda. Thanks for a great site.

Did any of you guys see the rocket in the western sky tonight, I have seen the trails several times, but tonight I watches the rocket with my kids, it was out of Vandenberg, they were talking about the lights in the sky on the radio as I headed to the store later.

Very nice pictures, talk about multi-game bag. -
You might also want to buy the how to hunt coues deer book that Amanda sells on this site, http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/hunting_units_31.shtml and that is the link to the hunt unit reports on the game and fish website. Good Luck and God Bless.

long long distance shooting
KGAINES replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Though I have passed on several deer further out than 500 yards it was not due to the fact that I couldn't make the shot, I just tried to get closer, if you can do it great, if you can't don't, and if you have to think about it too much you are probably talking yourself into a bad decision. Now with all that being said I would take the shot at a coyote as opposed to trying to sneak up on it wihout a call. -
Sorry to hear about your scouting buddy,my prayers are with you and your family.

http://www.marinescoutsniper.com/sniper%20pages/Carlos.html I read both books written on him, I would hate to be a bad guy with him out there, and if he would have had some of todays improvements he would have been even better. That is a good article on him and some of his opinions on shooting. -
I think I am just repeating what everybody else has said, but that is a nice bull.

I have seen several, a few while hunting, I have seen two crossing I-17 just south of cordes, one was huge I actually turned around at bloody basin and went to see if it made it, no squishes on the road after I completed my circle, I have seen several at desert mountain while working up there also.
-
Congratulations, thanks for the story and the pictures, great bull.

http://www.taurususa.com/pdf/rifle_manual.pdf page 24 I don't know if this is the right model, but this one looks like the barrel screws in. If you are not sure ask a gunsmith, they might tell you how to do it.

Alaska Bear & Deer Pics
KGAINES replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I have to say Alaska is on my dream hunt list, thanks for the pictures and congratulations on your success. -
Now that I think of it the moon was full, and it was calm, and you know it had just stopped raining, wait I also think that it was windy earlier that day. All of those aren't accurate and and meticulous, I have a photographic memory, at least I thought I did. In reality I think some people have success doing certain things and remember as much as they can about it, but nobody remembers everything, notes would help, but I personally would feel that was way to much like work.
