Everything still looking good out this way, anticipate the crappie stocking to happen mid next month for San Carlos Lake. In other fishing news we got on Talkalai yesterday and good results all around despite the wind and turbid water. The crappie at Talkalai were the biggest I've ever seen there! DAN

Nothing extra after the storm, we didn't get much precip out here besides mostly snow dusting. They also started letting water out on the 8th but we still have twice as much coming in to the Lake for now. DAN

For anyone available this coming weekend. DAN

The stocking will likely have the biggest impact for spring 2024 as most ppl understand I think, but we'll likely have a mix of fish, some fingerling and some capable of spawning this year. There were no fish left last summer except carp and some gizzard shad which all perished as the lake completely dried. As some have explained the lake is very capable of rebounding all on its own from naturally occurring fish in the Gila and those washed down from Talkalai during flooding. 2017-18 gave the Lake enough water and time to do the above mentioned process which is what is also predicted for '23-'24. When the Lake dries it creates a very fertile environment which can explode with aquatic life should those area fill with water as in a "New Lake Effect". Here's Old San Carlos area late August of last year and the same area yesterday. DAN

Went out today checking all the high water ramps. Quail Springs, New Govt Corral, and Mohave Pt. DAN

We plan to stock both yes. DAN

Not sure about NM predictions but we haven't had much contribution from the Gila so far which is surprising. Most of this last surge was all from the San Carlos River and its tributaries. When this thread started we too were having some incredible flows all across the Rez which I've never seen before. DAN

Plenty of stocking planned this year for San Carlos as we'll hold over to spring 2024 like we did 2017-18. We got to 32% that time (2017) and spring '18 was excellent for crappie. We're currently leveling off at just over 40%. Plan to get out and survey fairly soon here. DAN

Good job on getting the first, keep at it and before you know it you'll become a magnet. Them things are anywhere and everywhere so you don't always have to be in the "perfect spot" to get into action. DAN

To clarify, the Companion Pass allows the companion to glass as well as the other reasons, safety, etc. That's exactly why it was implemented. They cannot separate from the hunter while in the field and if they want/need they are allowed to wait at camp. Current regulation puts a limit at 2 per hunter but we changed it to up to 3 per hunter which will begin next August 1st. Companion permit holders are not allowed to possess any other permits (small game, Lion, predator, etc). Companion permits are available for all big game hunts in all units. Also for those who aren't aware the Department now offers SxS permits to Nonmembers for Unit D Coues Hunts. All permits are currently only available at the Department office in Peridot. Hours of operation are M-Sat 6am to 6pm, Sun 8am to 12pm. DAN

Went across from Seneca to Chihuahua to POP and through Park Creek on the Rez yesterday. Every creek is running (some nearly un-crossable) and every tank full. Those steady overnight rains are doing a number. DAN

Yes our catfish come from Texas. DAN

Fire restrictions back to stage 1. Still plenty of good fishing happening all across the Rez, our latest catfish stocking was a nice spread of 6-10 lb channels (Gimme, Phillips Park, Baskin, Hostene, Turkey Roost, Juniper). DAN

There was but it isn't accurate any longer. With the consistent drought these days we're having to restock a lot of tanks each year and that's only if they refill after going low or dry. Just about every pond has ccf with the ones in the higher country having the most bass opportunities. Tons of wildlife out right now and beautiful weather. DAN

Currently still in stage 1 fire restrictions (completely read the above document). The $5 habitat stamp is a yearly requirement so keep it all year for all your SC activities. Consecutive days of fishing/recreation allow you to camp overnight for those days. You are allowed to have a firearm for personal protection. Also in case others aren't aware, you can fish from either bank (SCAR or WMAT) with either permit (SCAR or WMAT). You must be camped though on the side which you have your permits for/from. DAN

Good catch stanley, it's the first thing that stood out to me as well and I'm sure anyone else who read it. Still not certain if it was a typo to begin with because I'm pretty sure Propane still good to go during stage 2 restrictions on the Rez, however the Tribe I'm sure can modify if/and when needed. In either case here's the latest update. DAN

First seen Kuiu on an elk hunt around 2013 or so, uncle's client was a big shot for 3M and had on the rain gear, he kept disappearing in the binos every time he'd stop about 400yds out, pretty impressive pattern. Been "running" Kuiu since '15 when the attacks were a low low $109, most comfortable pant for the field or casual wear, and the materials perform as advertised. The layering system comes in handy for our crazy Az weather every time. Agree with some about recent changes in fitting or construction and really hate how they've jumped in price several times now. No changes still stage 1. The Department plans to keep the Reservation open for as long as possible pending any fires. On a side note we've been stocking the dirt ponds pretty heavy with catfish (hwy tank area, warm springs area, ash creek area, clover area), bass (hwy tank area, juniper tank), trout (Seneca, POP, Cienega tank (12-14")) all across the Reservation.
