    Any new requirements?

And even last year when we crossed at Columbus, New Mexico, they wanted them still frozen. We talked to them before going in and they told us this. We told them that the new regulations required that they be frozen for 24 hrs then thawed but they were persistant and said they wanted them frozen. We kept them frozen and had no issues returning. That's the part that drives you up the wall! What they WANT -vs- what is REQUIRED...

Anybody hunt Coues recently in Chihuahua?

I have hunted in Ch the last 2 years and am going back down again in January. We cross over at Columbus, NM as it is not very busy and is an easy crossing there. I have never had any issues and have never felt threatend nor has anyone that has hunted with out outfitter. We have had no issues with the quality of deer being down, I think people just feel threatened and are not going. While El Paso is the safest city in the US for populations of over 500,000, it is right across from Bagdad on the Border and can tell you that Juarez is not the place you want to be in, even though the violance is down 40% from last year. But crossing over at Columbus and driving down does not seem like any threat to me at all and it is not going to stop me from going until I feel there is an issue. I have had 2 friends go down there with me that have hunted in Africa several times and they both said they feared for their safey more in Africa than they did in Mexico (at least where we hunt)
  3. Has anyone done any digiscoping with a point and shoot camera? I have a Swaro 65mm spotting scope and have held the camera by hand and taken photo's but was thinking about getting an adapter and a new point and shoot camera (if necessary) to do it right. Any experiences? What combo of adapter/camera did you use? Thanks for any suggestions.
  4. So how/where does this mount to the bino's? On one photo it looks like it is in the back and in the other photo looks like the front.

    Wyoming Left over Antelope permits

You can rest assured that left over buck tags in areas that have public access will be few and far between if there are any at all. I used to live in Wyoming and have hunted there for over 30 years. The bulk of the left over buck tags will be in the Northeast portion of the state where the bucks are typically small and the area is 99% if not 100% private land. You normally have to go with an outfitter to hunt these ranches or pay a healthy tresspass fee to the rancher in order to hunt. My suggestion would be apply for a preference point when they go on sale in July and try to draw next year. You can draw a fair area with just one preference point but a "good" area will take 2 to 4 points.

    Out of State Draw Changes?

But aren't Land Owner tags available to the Residents too? I know of a group of 5 residents in Las Cruces that buy land owner cow elk tags every year to be able to hunt on a ranch with no one else there. They are willing (and I guess able) to afford this tag. I still say you need to look at the number of tags that are "Available" for each group. I feel you are trying to distort the facts by using this method. AND starting this year, the tags set aside for hunters with an Outfitter are available for Residents too. Regarding the comment on why don't they make all the landowner elk tags cow elk tags since they are for depredation I don't believe that is the way the G&F is thinking. The landowner tags are different than the depredation hunts. The land owner tag is NMG&F way of compensating the landowner for his loss due to the animals. Now I'm not saying that this is correct or that it is legal or illegal but I don't think you want the land owner to get 20 cow tags instead of 5 bull tags. In Wyoming, they pay the rancher for each animal that is killed on his place, guess what, most of that land is still unavailable for anyone to hunt on without a hefty tresspass fee. I don't really have a dog in this hunt as the tags I "try" to draw are in the 6% catagory. I say try as over the years, I have drawn 5 tags (mixture of elk and antelope) in over 50 attempts (every year, multiple species). I don't typically hunt with an outfitter in New Mexico as I live close to New Mexico (3 miles over the state line) so I can do my own scouting, nor have I ever bought a land owner tag BUT I think an outfitter (and more than likely a Resident of New Mexico) has the right to earn a living and I know several ranchers who use the money they make off the landowner tags to help make their ranch payments. As I stated on this forum earlier this year the reduction from 10% of the tags being reduced to 6% really did not bother me that much. I just hope it stops there. In reality, it did not change my chances of being drawn that significally. If you look at the number of applicants -vs- the number of tags available chances just went from slim to slimmer. And on the other hand, it did not really help the resident that significally. Even if you made ALL the tags resident only tags as they have done with the cow tags you are not going to help the resident draw a tag by a significant amount. The fact is that there are way more hunters than there are tags. All New Mexico has accomplished is to alienate themselves with non-resident hunters and hopefully this does not come back to bite New Mexico.

    Out of State Draw Changes?

"and if you look at the straight numbers over 70% off goat tags go to NR... I wonder how that would fly in AZ..." Jamaro - how do you figure 70% of goat tags go to NR? A more fair statement may be how many tags are AVAILABLE to residents or AVAILABLE to non-residents. Land Owner tags are AVAILABLE to both residents and non-residents. According to the Game and Fish website draw results - Total Antelope tags issued - 1,937 Issued to Residents - 1,557 Issued to non-resident without guide - 225 Issued to non-resident with guide - 155

    Out of State Draw Changes?

6% for Non-resident without a guide 10% for Resident OR Non-resident with a guide 84% for Resident without a guide I hear you on not having land owner tags but I think if that happened it would shut down most of the private land to any type of hunting other than the land owner himself.

    How many main beams?

I love the non-typicals. Think about this, how many typical 80 to 90 inch animals are taken every year compared to a non-typical? A non-typical is MUCH more rare!

Love that mass!! Congrats & good job!
  17. I fire form for several cartridges, while it is a bit of a pain it's not any more dangerous than any reloading. Kirby is exactly correct on how you do it. I would suggest having the bullet out as long as possible, having the bullet up close or even touching the lands gives you the best case. With some searching you will find that there are many ways of fire forming, using oatmeal in lieu of a bullets, using grits, etc. but I have found that using a lightweight inexpensive bullet is the way I feel most comfortable doing it. Welcome to the world of wildcats! It fun and adventure filled!

Duck Recipes --- who has a good one?

Here's another one for an excellent appitizer In a bowl mix a can of smoked oysters (oil and all) with some cilantro and a little bit of garlic. Smash the oysters until they are puried and mix with the cilantro and garlic. Depending on how much oil in the smoked oysters you may need to add some olive oil to the mix. Cut duck filets into 1 inch wide strips and put a layer of the oyster paste on the filet. Put some slices of jalapeno on the filet and roll up and wrap with back holding together with a toothpick. Grill over charcoal for 5 minutes turning in the middle DON'T OVERCOOK!

Duck Recipes --- who has a good one?

Here is a quick and easy one (works good for doves too) Spray tin foil with Pam or other non-stick spray (or coat with butter) lay bird filets on foil put chopped jalapeno's or green chile's on meat put a liberal amount of cream cheese on top of chile's (the whole tub!) lay slices of bacon on top of cream cheese Bake or grill for 18 minutes at around 400 degrees. The bacon grease will blend with the cream cheese to make an excellent "gravy" to eat with the meat.

    Score Him

I'd estimate low to mid 70's. Great prongs, good length, decent bases but very weak mass above his prongs.
