I am considering the Cabelas 12x50 Euros. I can get a good deal on these binos and it is very appealing considering I am not willing to dish out the money for Swaros or Leica. I have read some pretty good reviews on these binos but one aspect that concerned me was one review said they had an issue with fogging. Does anyone have any feedback in regards to these binos?

Well after a hot unsuccessful Mule Deer Hunt, my wife was lucky enough to get drawn for Cow Elk. My buddy Mike was gracious enough to let us use his cabin and his extra eyes for glassing. On day one as you would suspect I glassed up a nice 4x4 Mule deer and watched him graze for about 30 minutes. No elk to be seen. Later that evening we went to another location and picked up a Cow and her calf only 100 yards away but passed on the chance. Next morning went to the same location where we picked up the mule deer as it has been a good area in the past for seeing elk. Just before day light I picked up some cows and made our way down to the flats, well what looked like flats and was able to get within 50 yards of two cows. While the wife was getting ready to take her shot we heard a shot in the far distance but it was enough to spook the cows preventing my wife from getting shot. So, we decided to slowly make our way towards the direction they ran. In the distance I picked up a small 5x5 Bull but no cows. We eventually made it back up the hill and continued glassing when my buddy Mike picked up a nice herd of about 40 elk making their way to water. Unfortunately due to too many two tracks hunters had surrounded the flats and obviously picked up on the same herd. So, we decided to stay high and watch for a wihile and sure enough we just watched these elk get pushed from one area to the next until they started going to high ground. The wife and I took a guess that the road hunters were not going to chase these elk up hill so we made way and picked them up approximately 250 yards on the opposite side of a canyon and walking towards us. The elk continued in our direction into a small valley when at 200 yards my wife decided she had the lead cow in her cross hairs and was ready to take a shot. I quickly stopped her as a Bull pulled up next to the cow. Ready again my wife said "I'm taking her" when I heard her shoot. Unfortunately no hit, just as my wife pulled the trigger her shooting sticks slid down as they were not tightened. Lucky for her the Herd continued in our direction. I believe they were just so tired and confused they did not know what to do. Again, she had the lead cow in her sights at 125 yards and took a moving shot as i watched the compression of the impact. It was a little high above the front shoulder and below the neck. Fortunately the Cow did not run and good thing for us as the entrance wound did not show any blood. The cow then turned to walk up hill and the wife took a second shot dropping her where she stood. It was a shot to the spine but was obviously enough to end it with a final shot. I will say I made her panic a little as I told her she shot a Spike. I was joking of course but the look on her face was priceless. I was so excited for her and a proud husband and finally some elk meat as I have not been drawn since 2007. But of course my buddy Mike and I did the quartering. However, as I packed a hind quarter in Mike's pack he picked up a front quarter and headed down hill. I quickly stopped him and said "oh No" the wife needs to get the full experience and carry some meat out. She called me a few names but took it like a champ and carried a front quarter while I carried a front and hind quarter. After about a 1/2 mile hump we made it back to the Ranger. The wife was a little gassed but said she would do it all over agian and now she understands when I try to explain to her how hard hunting can be sometimes. What a great time and thanks Mike for the Cabin the help and friendship.

Congrats you were one of the lucky ones during the hot hunt. My wife and I got skunked only saw does. Your brother Jeff is a good buddy of mine and he shared your pics and i was excited someone I knew had a successful hunt. Wish someone would turn in his Binos though. Awesom Buck....

Wow thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry to hear about your PA but what a tribute in his memory. I will say you sound a lot like me when it comes to hunting I am always packed in advance. All I have to do is Add water and snacks to my pack. And you are right the Gutless method is the best, been doing it for a while now. To make things a little smoother, if you have not invested in the Havlon Knife I highly recommend it. I quartered a whole elk with one blade. You will still need a good knife for the joints as the Havlon does not do well if torqued.

Good luck to you. I got my first Bull in 22N. Was way out in the wilderness. Definately had to put in the work to locate. Well worth it, picked up 3 Bulls in the flats. What a hump back. Got my kill at about 7am and after quartering, packing and hiking not to mention rain we did not make it back to camp until 6pm. Wish I could do it all over again.

I took my quartered 6x6 to Southwest Processing and on the scale it weight around 240 llbs. I dont recall the return weight as i have not been drawn since 2007 but I was satisfied with the amount of meat in return. I gave some meet to a couple of buddies for the help and still had plenty of meat in the freezer to last a long time. Just took my wife's cow elk to Southwest. After quartering it, it only weight about 166 lbs so curious as to how much meat I will get in return.

Nice buck. You are right about the wind helped my buddy on opening morning.
-
Great buck. Wish it would cool off in my unit. Heat is preventing any movement.
-
Nice buck. Good to get it out of the way. My wife and I both drew tags this year and so far been skunked only seeing does. I am in a unit where I always see buck but it appears the heat is kicking my butt. Congrats again.

question about august archery in the desert
gbocardo replied to kennyazman's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Last august I did the normal routine, glassed in the early morning and again before dusk and made some good stalks but would return to camp mid day. On one of the days I thought i would try an earlier start and headed back to my glassing hill about 2 pm and too my surprise walking in the middle of the road were 4 bucks only 30 yards from the water and only 40 yards from me. But of course I was in my Ranger and not prepared as my bow was in the bed, along with my release. So, needless to say all I could do was watch them run off. I did attempt a stalk as they settled in some Juniper only 200 yards away but was never able to get close as they had eyes on me the whole time. The next day I tried sitting at that water hole all day and nothing but sweating my butt off until dusk when a huge monster came over the hill but never made its way down the hill until it got dark. I prefer a spot and stalk as opposed to sitting on water. -

My friend just won a new Nikon Prostaff Rangefinder 550 by raffle (Still in the box). He is not a hunter and wants to sell it. He is asking 150.00 OBO. IF interested please contact Rudy by email at r_acosta@mcso.maricopa.gov.

Okay This is my second year Archery Hunting Mule Deer and the excitement of getting my first kill has made me obsessed. I go hunt and glass every chance I get and it seems to be the only thing I think about. I have been fortunate enough to have a good friend who tries to help me every Chance he gets. Thanks Joe. Luckily my wife loves going with me or she would start to think something was up. This past September I saw a lot of Deer still in velvet and made several stalks. I was able to get within 90 yards of a nice 4x4 who was with 3 other bucks two 3x3's and a small 2x2 but could not close the distance due to no mover cover. It was killing me to be so close and not be able to make a move especially since the wind was in my favor. Then I spooked four more bucks on a two track near a water trough while i was driving my ranger to my glassing point and of course did not have my bow or release ready. I was still able to make a stalk but as i was making my stalk a single buck came in the area and the four bucks took after him. On the same evening I glassed up four different bucks and was able to make a stalk on another nice 4x4 and was able to get within 70 yards but the Palo Verde trees were too thick and was unable to get any closer. To me it was still a successful weekend seeing so many deer. In the last week of December my buddy and i glassed up a few bucks and attempted a stalk on a nice 4x5. We last saw him walk down hill into a wash and believed he bedded down as he never came out. Low and behold while near the area we last glassed him up he jumped up only 30 yards below me but I was never given the opportunity to take a clean shot as he only gave me his tail end . Needless to say I have nightmares about that one. Last weekend we glassed up a 2x2 way in the distance and again believed he bedded down as it was getting hot pretty early. Not seeing anything else we decided to see if we could find him. we were able to get on him within 50 yards. I did not even think about taking the shot as I wanted a bigger a buck. Yesterday my wife and I glassed up another 2x2 with 8 does but I was in no hurry to make the stalk. My wife kept telling to make the stalk as it would be my first deer. But after seeing much bigger ones I keep holding out. I guess my question is, since it will hopefully be my first deer kill with a bow, should i not be so picky and take what I can get or should I hold out for a nicer buck?

I have one and have seen seen up to 500 yards.

Okay everyone here it is, It was the last day, last bit of light and I see a buck with does. Whatever, it was not like the TV shows. However, my last day for January turned out to be fun and a learning experience. Me and my buddy Lew headed up to a spot I have been glassing quite often this season. I spot a couple of does in a bowl near some flats and eventually find a buck drop for his morning bedding. Before I make a stock we glass to make sure of how many does were in his area. We come to the conclusion the buck was with five does. I make my stock which I will say was quite a hump but was able to use the ridge line until I had to cut across the flats to make my way to the bedded buck. It was perfect I had cover, wind in my face and deer was below a cluster of rocks which would have given me a great advantage. I was only approximately 50 yards from making it to the rocks when I see two does pop up approximately 120 yards to the north west of me in the flats no where near the buck and does I was stocking. I slowly go to a slow crawl out of site and make it to a juniper. I glass up the two does and see another buck bedded in the flats where there was no shade. He was a nice 4x4 with mass and bigger than the buck I was stocking. Eventually seven more does gathered around the buck and were obviously spooked but the herd I was stocking still did not have a clue. If the spooked herd would continue Northwest I would be good. But if they run Southeast they would run right into the other herd. So yep! They High Tail it Southeast which made the buck I was stocking curious. He stood up from his bedding area along with the other does. They did not seem to spooked but decided to walk in the same direction of the running herd until they were out of site. Needless to say I was not able to pick them up again. I couldn't figure it out. You spend so much time trying to find even one buck and out of know where and unexpected two herds were in the same area. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Either way I am always learning. Can't wait till August. Thanks again everyone for the input and advice. Oh and by the way. If I would have made it to the rocks, I would have only had a 35 yard shot to where the buck was bedded.

I am currently using the Badlands Sacrifice and love it. Very light weight, comfortable and packs everything I need for a hunt. I packed out my buddies deer which included front and rear quarters while he carried out the head and cape, back straps and tenderloins. Probably may have been to much weight for the pack but it did the job and no damage to the pack. I highly recommend it..

I also helped a few buddies who had a limited tag near Winslow on private land. The ranchers wanted them gone. There were way too many hunters and for the Ranchers complaining we did not see anything. Not to mention all the water holes were dry. Could not understand what the Ranchers were complaining about. The ranchers should of helped out a little and kept the water troughs wet.

Nice Bull. Good to know about the knives. Joe D and I were talking about them not too long ago.

You are the man. Still trying to get my first. Great Bucks

I agree PM would be your best option. I helped my buddy glass a nice 4x4 he took and another member sent him a PM. Turned out was the same buck he had been picking up on a game cam.

Great video. What is the deal this season. I have seen a lot of small bucks with a good amount of does. Where are the big bucks
-
Great job and you are right great character.

Awesome buck, I have been chasing bucks just about every weekend just cant get close enough. Congrats

I was out this past weekend and made a stock on a nice 4x4 who my wife called the elk. He was with 13 does. However, the does busted me. The next morning picked up two bucks a 2x2 and 3x3 with 11 does. They kept moving so was unable to make a good stock and never saw where they bedded. However, did see a few different set of does by themselves. Can't wait to get out again this weekend....
