308, 30-06 cant be beat for versatility. i still shoot a 30-06, my first rifle i bought. i does every thing i have ever asked of it and then some. the boss, my wife, has even gone as far as insisted i get a ''bigger'' aka magnum but i just cant justify the expense. as mentioned before...what are you really trying to do? if you shoot a 7mm already what are you really going to gain by a RUM. if it matters the ''long range'' hunting shows seem to shoot just as many 7mm's as RUM. spend the money on high end binos, scopes, etc. things that will last you a lifetime of hunting if you have money burning a hole in your pocket. that, my friend, is something i trully know nothing about.

don't know bout this one lowball... my cousin has two of them and they are not very active (read lazy) and dont do much except slobber ALOT. they both are not very bright at all and i dont think that because they are slow movers. if that were true people would say im really really dumb. no offense to any one here but they make down symdrome possible for dogs.

my wife was very disappointed because the midwife was adimate (sp) about her not going elk hunting. she stated the reason was because the percussion of the shot would be amplified by the fluid around the baby and the vibration could harm the baby. even if she was not the shooter. i do understand the percussion and vibration but i aways believed that the midwife was a anti-hunting tree hugger organic nature lover etc... in the end my wife did not hunt.

Very cool! I went to Al a few years ago for new years and made time for some quick hunts. the first question i asked was if i could take a wild hog. they told me i could if i saw one but that they were very rare i guess they were not in that part of the state. every time they are mentioned on tv you would think they were EVERYWHERE. id love to run into one here in az.

My work does not allow youtube so.. My uncle, my hunting mentor/partner, has put put a lot of work into loading elk up. Once a good 5x5 ended down in a steep small canyon some 40-50ft of near vertical sides. The type you got up on all fours. My uncle ran back to camp and got a 8000lb winch on a home make cradle with heavy quick connect terminals, a battery and lots of rope. The winch is secured to a good tree. The rope to the antlers on one end and the end of the cable to the other. The winch does most of the work. We only have to steer/guide the elk around and over rocks etc. It really does a number on the battery but as my uncle says "thats a small price to pay" He is determined to get the elk out whole cause of not "you loose to much meat" When we can drive up to and elk on the quads an sutible tree is found and one of us climbs up and ties a small pully (3 inch) to the tree. The rope is feed through the pully and to the quad one end and the base of the antlers to the other. When lucky you have too put 2-3 people on the quad cause the elk can weight as much as the quad. The quad is backed up and the elk is pulled right up with out much trouble at all. It can be dressed right away or put on another quad/ranger/truck.

I'd love to spend more time out doors and keep my kids excitment for the outdoors going strong. I want to try predator hunting. that way id have a reason to get out side in the off seasons. im always so jealous of you all stealing quick coyote hunts! Shoot more. I have to extend my max shot distance, for me the only way do do that is to practice. Very low on my list......lose a few for my 20 year (ouch!) HS reunion. Seriously. Be the best man, husband and father possible. Just be greatful for all of my blessings. God has had me 'under his wing' for much longer than i deserve.

muzzy hunting is fun, ibut it takes work! 50 vs 45. 45cal never seemed to pan out popularity wise so you can find some on ''clearance'' for a good deal but with the years it might be hard to find sabots for it. they also seems to have less energy because of less bullet weight which will be fine for javies but later for elk it could be an issue if you ever hunt with it. you can reduce loads for comfort and still get great accuracy. muzzy loaders are VERY tempermental when it comes to bullet/sabot combinations, charge weight and black powder used. even what and how frequently you clean it with. much much more so than center fire. when i developed the load used for elk it took nine trips to the range and more than a dozen different combinations. i recommend starting with loose powder so you can try lots of different charge wieghts instead of being stuck to 30 or 50grn incraments. also be very good about cleaning and cleaning the rifle properly after the range session is done. ive seen a few that have been ruiend because fo black powers corrosiveness. they can be very accurate but they shed energy quickly because of brick style arrowdineamics. some scopes are rated to hit at 200+ yards but again the energy is not there.

the fact that every other american was armed was taken into consideration by the Japanese. wolverines was just on a few days ago. my mind started thinkng of just how many true patriots would cause ANY invading force to have fists! think about how many VERY capable LOOONNGG shooters, not me, are around now compared to the WW2 era. not saying they were not around but not in the numbers as before.

loose. with pellets you are stuck with 30 or 50gr at a time. loose you can try different charges to see what the rifle will like. its amazing how much work a MZ needs to find what the rifle likes. thats were all the fun is at.

Accurizing a Weatherby Vanguard
More D replied to Condor's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
i just read about that in the new guns&ammo mag...freebore. not casey's fondness of shooting dead deers antlers off. joking aside... the article said it was difficult to impossile to get the velosity out of a non weatherby rifle ie remington, winchester in weatherby calibers because no other manufacture dose the freebore. -
do elk from ponderosa forest taste better than from P-J?
More D replied to desertyankee's topic in Elk Hunting
my brother took a nice mulie from the 'bab' and i swore he put sage, the spice, when he made jerky. i asked him and he says he only put what we always do, salt, pepper, garlic powder and santa cruz brand chile powder. elk, to me, tatse better than deer. id always assumed it was cause elk ate grasses. dont get me wrong i prefer to eat any well cared for game meat than store bought meat. the only exception is a nice marbled rib eye. my uncle who used to work at cattle ranch many years ago said the best tasting meat came from cows who ate wild oregano in sonora. -
very cool!!
