Cool pic, I saw a doe like that near San Manuel, two seasons ago. She stuck out like a sore thumb.

I was in 37A. Missed a 25 yard shot with my muzzleloading pistol. Having trouble stabilizing .45 sabot slug in .50 cal. Gonna switch to roundball when I get back out this week. Luckily, I was able to keep out of the sight of a couple of yahoo walter-mitty types on quads who came poking around after hearing my shot. I've hunted this unit for years but lately it seems that these vultures are coming around more and more. They should spend a little more time scouting and alot less time polishing the rims on their red dodge. Just my uneducated two-cents worth.

I have four acres bordering Laveen with predators galore. Last Friday after dark, my daughter and I called in a bobcat and 3 coyotes. Cooler than heck, watching them come in through my cheapie night vision scope. I need one of those Dragonslayer .50 cal airguns!

I used a 45 cal Kentucky pistol, last year and plan on using it again this year. It is a blast (no pun intended). single shot, round ball cap gun. Last year, I missed one but pulled my back up gun (.45 1911) and double lunged one running at 17 yards. This year, I am leaving the back up in the pack and getting one with the muzzleloader. Shooting this pistol has taught me so much about consistency in loading. Between powder charge, patch, and tamp down so many things can effect accuracy. I can hit a paperplate up to about 15 yards with it. Loads of fun but remember you only get one shot.

I can't stop staring at that pic.

Just to let everyone know, I saw a racer moving pretty quick this weekend and ran across a den that had snake tracks in the dust on a rock ledge. Won't be long before the first donkey gets bit at Bartlett.

My Predator hunt and a question for all

You are my god! Mold me in your image. -
If you are doing alot of trapping, especially skunks etc, you should look into getting a pre-exposure rabies shots (3 in a month). I believe they are good for two years but if you are exposed you still need medical attention and a couple more shots. A couple of javelina seasons ago, a guy I know had his butt kicked by a fox and went through the treatment. Not good, unless you are into the S&M scene.

I took a few hours off work yesterday evening to do some varmint calling. I'm a novice caller, so I still have a lot to learn. Anyways, I had a dying jackrabbit call going and a couple of coyotes opened up with howls. After a few minutes, the howls turned to a howl ending in a whimper/whine. The dogs wouldn't come any closer after that. I suspect I was spotted. Any ideas? How would you proceed at that point? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all who sent personal messages and emails. The information will be put to good use.

Hey all, My kids and I would like to find some elk sheds but only have experiance looking for deer antlers. Can anyone point out a good general area and time to start? What elevation should we focus on? We don't mind walking and only want a couple for the wall, so they can brag about finding them. Thanks in advance.

I find that taking my girlfriend and her best friend hunting keeps me plenty warm at night, then that's a whole other story and a bit off topic!

Food for thought as to when buffalo showed up in Arizona: East of Bloody Basin, I have seen a petroglyph of a buffalo. If i can find the pic i took, I'll scan and post it.

I could be wrong but I think this lion is walking backwards.

Tines, Just for the record, I don't know anyone here. I'm just a newbie who was stupid enough to get caught up this disagreement. I'm sure everyone here is a great guy to have on your side. On a different note, was the original topic of this thread ever addressed? And, how much did the lion in question weigh?

JustBones, Maybe, I wasn't clear. I'm not saying that I spit on hound owners. Truth be told, I have a bluetick and two walker crosses. What I am saying is that I spit on the attitude of people who think it is ok to bully in on a track or animal just because they are better equipped. As for this example, where two people were at different parts of the track line then find out that they are hunting the same animal? The gentleman thing to do would be for the second hunter to defer to the first if the story is plausible. I understand that the first hunter was down the road. I personally would never have left the track in the first place and I would never have told someone that it was my track unless I was practically straddling it. That is how I avoid this kind of situation.

Tines, I probably would have stopped and asked you how you were doing etc....and then drove away to let you enjoy your hunt. I'm not saying I am without fault just that my grandpa taught me a thing or two about being a sportsman. Who knows maybe you would have asked my to stick around and help out. I don't have a cool nickname like "giant slayer" or " terminator of only trophy beasts" but maybe I don't need one. "Let's play lion tamer!" Get on your hands and knees and I'll put my head in your mouth!"

My turn. A few years back, I was hunting mulies near Kearney. After a few fruitless days, I was sitting in camp with my grandfather and uncle. They decided to drive to a nearby mountain for the evening hunt. Being discouraged, I decided to stay in camp. Of course, I got bored and decided to take my shotgun and roll a few quail or rabbits. As I walked out of camp, I glanced at my rifle and kept walking. After less than a hundred yards, I stood on a low rise and watched a picture perfect 4x4 mulie saunter by at a range of 30 feet. Of course, I went and grabbed my gun and tracked the buck. A mile later, I missed. Never leave your primary weapon behind.

If this board is an indication of the general nature of hunting in areas favored by hunters with hounds it sounds like there should be a "hound-only" season. Too bad egos rule over common sense. What do you do when you find someone else after the same animal that you are after? Only you can answer that question. Myself, I can walk away knowing that is how the ball bounces. Apparently, others are in favor of drawing a circle and holding a "rasslin match" in it to see who gets the kill. If that is your attitude, I spit on you. Someone going by the moniker " Coues n sheep" posted a topic titled "It has been bugging me........We need to hold to a higher standard" Although it is aimed at long range rifle shots the general principles discussed are right on target. Twist this post and apply it to any hunting, lions included, and you'll be a little better for it.

Forgive my ignorance, who is "Andy the giant slayer" and why is he called "the giant slayer" by certain members of this board?

I forgot the part about not all of us can wear a size XXL jock in realtree hardwood. (Pun intended)

I'm new here and don't know any of you personally but a few days ago, I was looking over the pics and thought "why not post a few seems like a cool site." Seeing this kind of name calling, bitching, arrogance, prejudice, and possible defense of actions unbecoming of a sportsman reminds me why I normally don't bother to contribute to these sites. Unfortunately, many of the same people who are attracted to websites that allow them to glorify themselves for all to see are also the same people who would never cut a stranger or newbie some slack. We all can't drive the biggest truck, while wearing the biggest stetson, and shooting the latest 700 magnum revolver at a B&C lion from 500 yards but we can all help someone hone their skills. Right is right and only the people involved know what really happened. Sad part is some of those people probably will never be able to tell right from wrong. That's all I have. I know I was ranting, so feel free to slander me.

My experiance with this lion is a pretty good story. A few years back, I was exploring some washes in one of my favorite areas. Coming up to an S-shaped turn in one wash, I suddenly had the old feeling that something was watching me. Coming to a stop, I scanned the area ahead of me to no avail. But, I knew something was there. Raising my rifle, I looked into the shadows through my scope. Seeing nothing, I started to lower my rifle and at that instant this lion stood up on a shelf about five feet up the side of the wash seventy feet ahead of me. It jumped back into the brush in a flash. Never having been accused of possessing an overabundance of brains, I set my scoped bolt-gun down, pulled my .45 and charged into the brush after it but did not see it again. Completely juiced from that experiance, I drove fifty miles straight to Wal-Mart and bought a trailcam and drove back. About fifty yards from where I saw the lion, I found a tree that it used as a signpost. Setting the camera up on this tree, I left the area and returned the next morning to find my first lion pics! I was hooked. I bought more cameras and started working the area. I was able to determine that this lion travels through this area around the third week of the month almost every month. I have seen this lion two other times but have yet to get a good shot. One time while hiking into the area where I set up my cams, I turned to see the lion paralleling me but it disappeared into the brush before I could raise my rifle. Another time after sneaking through this brush weekly for six months without firing a shot, I gave into temptation. Standing on a small ridge, I looked down to see a jackrabbit move out of the brush and sit in the clear area in the center of the wash. I decided to take a shot. Instantly after shooting, I hear a loud growl and look down to see the lion run from the brush near the rabbit. I suspect that if I had waiting a few seconds, I would have seen the lion jump on the jackrabbit. Another time, I did not have time to check my cams during the day so like an idiot I hiked in around 8pm. Having obtained a few pics, I decided to return in the morning and try to call the lion in. Well the next morning, I saw my tracks from the night before with lion tracks on them all the way down the ridge almost to where my truck was! Good times. I could go on and on about this. It has been about three years now and one day one of us is going to get whacked. I hope it is me whacking the lion and not the other way around but you pay to the admission and take your chances. In my opinion, that is what it is all about. Later. FYI: The object hangin in some of my pics is a clump of foil I use as an attractant. I also have found that the old catnip trick works as well.
