Was up near the rim this weekend, an afternoon shower cooled things down and bugles started popping off. Saw a few small bulls raking trees and trying to shed the velvet. You lucky tag holders are gonna have a great Sept.

"Going out of Fishing & Hunting" sale
SWDesertRat replied to Outdoor Writer's topic in Classified Ads
Tony, Im interested in the Snip Pod kneeler. Thanks -
It is an elk hunt he is talking about, west of Springerville, limited opp. cow. Never hunted in that particular area but spent some time in there. You can find elk on that sw border closer to the trees, theyll likely move into the trees each morning but thats only a guess. If I were you, I'd also pay attention to the flats and all those little draws that head out towards the highways. Get high and glass. Dont forget about that portion of the hunt area closer to Springerville. The hunt was designed to alleviate elk impact on those hay and alfalfa fields in that valley. Good luck

Id be happy to provide you some intel. PM if youre interested. Great unit and great hunt, welcome to the site.

I absolutely detest bug spray, hate the smell, hate the oil residue. That being said I very reluctantly use Ben's 100% Deet to keep mosquitos away from my ears when I sleep on a cot under the stars, and that is usually after a few hours of fighting them off. Cedar gnats and flies during the day while hunting in the fall are a whole other ball game. I think these things can drive a person mad, its not the bites I mind so much, its the noise and the getting in my eyes, nose and ears that makes fall tough. Deet is very effective at keeping these insects away, although I have my reservations about any chemical that corrodes plastic (lost a few watch faces over the years) and some fabrics. I have a can of Permethrin I have been meaning to use. It is only applied to fabric and is odorless after drying. I thought that buying a mesh camo bug suit, gloves and head mask and spraying it with Permethrin would be the ticket for me to stay sane while hunting. Keeps the bugs away and my good camo free of toxins Im curious if anyone has used it successfully?

Navajo Nation elk hunts unit 13/14 leftover tags
SWDesertRat replied to vincefmx's topic in Elk Hunting
NonNavajo is $400 deer and 600 for elk, at least for the seasons on those leftover tags. Like Norteno says, there are some bulls and bucks that move through that portion south of Gallup along the Hogback and Ft Wingate area. Ive seen some nice bulls moving around the Zuni and Nav boundary too a little further south. The country around Bread Springs isnt very rugged but pretty thick juniper country. There are good points in the area that would work for glassing lits of country. If you get a tag, take a look at the country north of Mt Taylor in Unit 14. -
Yep, Im looking for a 7mm Rem mag for a southpaw. I know these arent hens teeth so let me know what you have. Not looking for a built gun, stock is perfect, and more likely in my price range. If I dont find it here, I'll be going to gunbroker or similar sight. Would prefer a FTF deal and someone in the 'community'. Thanks Call or text 575 64niner 1three 72

Want to Buy Frontier Gear Backpack and Frame!
SWDesertRat replied to cpugsie's topic in Classified Ads
Good luck in your quest! I wouldnt sell mine for anything... Seen guides in Ak, New Zealand, and all the Canadian provinces use these packs and use them hard. Best external frame pack money can buy. I really hope you find a good deal. -
Using 2-way radios while hunting. Legal, ethical or what?
SWDesertRat replied to Whitesheep's topic in The Campfire
Keep in mind regarding the OP's original comment about Tim Christie's article in Az Wildlife Views and radios, that Mr Christie is a freelance writer and likely did not explore Az statutes regarding the use of radios when he wrote his article. That would be my guess. However, there are some states, MT for example where radios are illegal. -
I did a little research when I was looking at grinders. I discovered that for what I do and what most folks do, 3/4 hp is plenty big enough. My buddies went in on a Cabelas 3/4 when it was on sale and one of them had a coupon so it knocked 200.00 off. The thing is a beast, and works great, I just dont like how much space it takes up for storage. So I started looking for alternatives. There are lots out there, Costco even has one. I settled one that attaches to the Kitchen Aid, not KA brand though, its called Chefs Choice, it comes with a coarse and fine grind and its all metal. We already owned the Kitchen Aid Pro 550, which means its 550 watts, essentially almost 3/4 hp. Ive run two javelina through it, and the mixer didnt even balk at the frozen meat and fat I was putting through it. Best part is cleanup is a breeze, the whole grinder can go into the sink or dishwasher and it all fits in a big bowl in the cupboards. Easy set up, take down and storage and I bought it for about 100.00 on Amazon. Oh and the lady was more excited about the grinder than I was because she can use it for dinner size jobs without too much hassle.
