Desert Backpacking Buck (October Rifle 2018)
GreatWhiteBuffalo replied to a topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Congratulations to both of you. Thanks for sharing but we need more. I love the 4-5 mi hiking in the dark and backpacking, but there is no way I am sleeping on the ground, in the desert, in AUG-SEPT. Tell us more of the scouting adventure. You haul in your cot! Hammock? -
Seem to catch one on cam every summer

19PP but another 1R Bull tag

CO early draw elk hunts are only $100 for youths. A great way to fill the freezer and they are an either sex hunt.
-
"Stoneman Lake area looks like the Kaibab before it went to a draw this morning, to bad too because 6A was just starting to show some promise again." Sucks to have one of the 50 late WT tags this year

Minimal birds in SD & ND unless you go to a reserve...It is going to take years to recover -
Avoiding cactus

I have always hunted Cholla for the very reason bird dog owners avoid them like the plague, a steel comb and needle nose pliers a must -

Seeking advice on western Colorado lake fishing for Kokanee
GreatWhiteBuffalo replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Fishing
It is not trolling or 'fishing' but Snagging of Kokanee starts in September. Seems like last year snagging at Mc Phee/Dolores peaked in middle October. Not sure there is even a limit, just lots of fish to smoke! With water levels up this year, it should be a great run. -
I have 2 NIB Polar H10. $50/ea
-
West Fork of the Dolores River has a couple of campgrounds. Not sure about availability on a holiday weekend. Plenty of stream fishing to be had. McPhee Reservoir has campgrounds as does Groundhog Reservoir. both are minutes from plenty of streams

First and second OTC hunts are combined hunts with close to half being MD hunters. 1st draw and combined rifle hunts will have pushed most legal bulls into the dozens and dozens of canyons. You need to be willing to go after them and will definitely need help packing them out. 73 late could be really good if there is snow. I personally have always hunted the first draw; elk only, less people and first crack. Plus you can draw with no preference points in most units. Most definitely go have a good time and let us know how it went.

Very Nice
