Anyone doing the over the counter archery turkey
couesdeerhntr replied to couesdeerhntr's topic in Turkeys!
went up to 23 this past wednesday cruzed the 200 rd all the way from young to the 260 calling the whole way and took some different roads off the main rd and didnt hear or see anything. did see one set of tracks but that is it. hopefully you guys are doing better than i am. i called about every 200 yards thinking i would get lucky but it didnt pan out. makes me want to make the long drive to unit one or 27 because i know i will at least get into birds there. i have never hunted 23 so it was def a new experience but some beautiful country and i am going to have to put some time into that unit to located and have a better idea of some bird locations. -

this year i was lucky enough to fill both my tags in new mexico. my buddy derrick and i scouted the saturday and sunday before opening day and had some birds roosted for us on opening day. wind was in the forecast and it was not looking good for the three days we planed on being there. opening day came and we had ourselves sitting under the birds. the birds flew down out of the trees and of course in opposite direction from us. we watched them struttin and gobbling to my calls but they just wouldn't break away from the hens. the birds slowly followed the other hens to the top of a little hill and they stayed there strutting and doing there thing. just then i see a coyote coming towards the turkey i didnt want the coyote to bust up the birds so i decided to use my yote call and i called him into 10 yards and then he winded us and what does he do? he runs straight to the birds but by this time i dont see the birds anymore. two minutes later another yote comes in to my call and this time i just wave my arms at him to spook him and what does he do? runs right towards the turkey as well so i try to stop him with the call and what i didnt expect was the tom to start gobbling to the call but he did. the yote goes right towards him. i thought it was over but we decided to go give a little peak on top of hill. to my surprise the birds were still there and the yotes were gone. i new i wasnt going to break the tom away fro the hens and the wind was picking up so i decided to try and circle around hill and try a little spot and stock. sure enough in worked out and i got to 60 yards of him and watched him strut for a bit and then threw out a call and had a hen behind me yelping as well and it brought him to 30 yards and i put him down. after that the wind picked up and never stopped the rest of trip. sense opening day i have been watching the weather and today seemed like it was going to be a great day to be up there with very little wind. woke up and midnight and made the five hour drive. talked to three gobblers but couldn't get them in until i drove to another spot and at 0950 i put down my second turkey for the season. got lucky and the bird gobbled once and ran right to me and i put him down took about five minutes from first call tell i shot fasted turkey hunt i have had. cant wait tell next year.

Anyone doing the over the counter archery turkey

I'm pretty sure it is. I asked AGFD that at the R2 office and they confirmed it, if memory serves me correctly. Of course, with as much as I have going on, its possible my memory is fuzzy on that. It is good for both. I'm going for a day or two up to Unit 1. Brian Glad you guys cleared that up for me because after reading this i looked at my otc tag that i got from walmart and it said nothing about spring turkey and just said resident turkey tag was hoping i didnt buy the wrong tag and i am glad to know i can use it in the fall as well if i am understanding you guys right -

Would love to meet up because i will prob be solo but not going to be able to get up tell that following monday because i work thru sunday but thanks for the invite kimber. Pm me and let me know how it went an good luck to you kimber -
I would say the southern units are a good bet. All of them have deer. My advice would be get some good glass and find some deer. And depending on the time you have the deer at that time should be getting ready for the rut and should be starting to mark there territory so look for signs of that and maybe u could pop up a blind or two in some active areas

in campnichols pic on his new mexico gobbler which is a rio looks just like the bird i shot today
-
what do you guys think of first pick?looks kind of like a rio grande? both birds were shot close to reserve nm. bottom pic is a merriams for sure but the fan and color of my bird in top pic is throwing me off. if it is a merriams i have never shot one with that kind of color that resembles a rio.

Joe hunter you are a tool for even posting this. Hey joe if u were camping and in your tent you wake up with your pants down to you ankles and your butt all lubed up would you tell anybody? And joe my friend by the sounds of it you are the brainwashed one. Who are you to be able to tell someone who they can and cannot be and who is are government oh ya in god we trust i forget about that tipical christian attitude who was raised to think your shoot dont stink and that u are better than everyone

As to broadheads i shoot the rage two blade but ij think any broadhead will work and the only tip that i got for you when hunting turkeys with a bow is to use some decoys and when u set up the hen decoy have her facing away from you cuz the tom will more then likely circle the hen and get behind her giving you his back and allowing you to draw your bow and make the shot right up the cornhole

sorry for the late post but have been busy with work and my wedding that i am about to have next month. this buck was shot in august during the opening archery season. shot this buck at thirty yards over water. i had planed on trying to get my cousin a nice buck with his bow but after sitting for 30 hours total in the blind and with three misses he decided he needed to practice a little more because he just couldnt make the shot when the buck fever started kicking in.so we decided to back out of area for the day and come back in morning due to the wind swirling our scent around. showed up to our blind nice and early in the morning and waited for the sun to come up. as the sun was coming up i saw four bucks on top of hill feeding. watched them for a while and then the decided to head up over the hill. looked at my cousin and told him that those bucks are going to get some sun and will be back in a little bit. sure enough about an hour later here came the bucks from the top of the hill right down to us in single file. all of ther bucks fanned out on the waters edge and i picked the best of the bunch and let the arrow fly. fourty yards later and i had a dead deer. def worth the wait and my cousin got to experience what it was like to have a coues deer buck at less than ten yards of you instead off looking at them through glass at 300 yards. man did i hook him. he is not going to make that mistake again and is going to be ready for next year thats for sure.

I would like to think that everyone that makes a bad shot and cant recover there kill would stop hunting after shooting one animal and not takin the chance of wounding an animal but i know that happens all the time. And i would bet alot of the tags that are givin out are givin to people that wont pull out there rifle tell the season opener and who knows how the rifle will shoot. So as for ethics i have no answer.
