Couesmagnet i have to agree i posted to this because it did bother me a bit. I see all the time posts about road hunting and people getting bashed for other reasons and really it is all about how u want to hunt and that should be all its about. I love this site for the information and being able to post your success stories. And seeing what other people encounter. I love that. And to be honest i love to see the huge coues deer that people shoot or post pics of.it keeps my adrenaline going and gets me reeady for my next hunt. It sucks to have so much negativity to others on how they hunt. From long range to road hunting to baiting and any other reason for others to disagree. I feel we are all on here for one reason and it is to share the experience and enjoy other peoples success thru hunting and to share the love of outdoors and that should be it. And i have to admit i am always a little jelious of others on there success and it keeps me going out so i can experience the same thing because i love hunting and i want to be the best at it i can be. This is why i love this site.

And i thinks every government operation is there to make money so we will always have the special trophy tags which are auctioned to the higest bidder and or raffled off

I personally think i am a trophy hunter as much as a meat hunter. With me already waiting nine years to get drawn for a bull elk tag i know for a fact that i am going to try and shoot me the biggest elk i can find if i ever get drawn because if i do get drawn there is a chance i might not again. For coues deer i am not going to shoot me a spike buck that i will only get maybe 20 lbs of meat from it boned out when i can hold out for a bigger buck and get me over fifty pounds of meat from a mature deer. Which in turn usually mean bigger antler size. When i am rifle hunting i am always looking for the 100inch or better because for one i see way more little bucks and to me it is way more of a challange to shoot a mature old buck that had made it thru a few years and is a little smarter, And if someone is holding out for a 110 or bigger buck and not shooting any "dinks" more power to them which means they are letting young bucks grow to a mature age. Which in my eyes will then produce larger deer numbers in units and maybe allow for more harvests of larger deer. In the units i hunt i have seen tags increase and the number of bucks decrease because of the fact that there is no antler restriction and in my eyes hurts a deer herd. I Have seen an area which yes it is close to a road but always use to hold bucks go from seeing five to six bucks a morning from spikes to mature bucks to not seeing one buck and only does and the only time i will see a buck in there is during the rut in january and he would be pushing one deer with fifteen other does in the area with no other bucks to be found for the whole season. And in arizona u are allowed one deer per calander deer and to be a meat hunter for a coues deer is a joke. Its not like we have a multiple deer a year season so why not try and find the biggest and badest deer you can find which should give u the most meat. In my eyes living in arizona and hunting big game here makes you a trophy hunter due to the draw system and limited hunt opportunites for big game and us having smaller deer herds than other states. Just my two cents.

What is the latest in spring has anybody called in a gobbler
couesdeerhntr posted a topic in Turkeys!
Just wondering what is the latest time anybody has called in a gobbler? Hunting or not hunting? And in the spring. I know the spring archery turkey tag otc goes tell the 23rd of may along with the second season and personally the latest i have called in a gobbler is the 15th of may. In unit one! -
Thanks kimber for the info at least you are hearing some birds my buddy has been up there for a few days seen some turkey crossing the roads but only hear them gobbling from roost and quiet once they hit the ground and thats with him not even calling so it sound a little promising

went up to 23 this past wednesday cruzed the 200 rd all the way from young to the 260 calling the whole way and took some different roads off the main rd and didnt hear or see anything. did see one set of tracks but that is it. hopefully you guys are doing better than i am. i called about every 200 yards thinking i would get lucky but it didnt pan out. makes me want to make the long drive to unit one or 27 because i know i will at least get into birds there. i have never hunted 23 so it was def a new experience but some beautiful country and i am going to have to put some time into that unit to located and have a better idea of some bird locations. -

this year i was lucky enough to fill both my tags in new mexico. my buddy derrick and i scouted the saturday and sunday before opening day and had some birds roosted for us on opening day. wind was in the forecast and it was not looking good for the three days we planed on being there. opening day came and we had ourselves sitting under the birds. the birds flew down out of the trees and of course in opposite direction from us. we watched them struttin and gobbling to my calls but they just wouldn't break away from the hens. the birds slowly followed the other hens to the top of a little hill and they stayed there strutting and doing there thing. just then i see a coyote coming towards the turkey i didnt want the coyote to bust up the birds so i decided to use my yote call and i called him into 10 yards and then he winded us and what does he do? he runs straight to the birds but by this time i dont see the birds anymore. two minutes later another yote comes in to my call and this time i just wave my arms at him to spook him and what does he do? runs right towards the turkey as well so i try to stop him with the call and what i didnt expect was the tom to start gobbling to the call but he did. the yote goes right towards him. i thought it was over but we decided to go give a little peak on top of hill. to my surprise the birds were still there and the yotes were gone. i new i wasnt going to break the tom away fro the hens and the wind was picking up so i decided to try and circle around hill and try a little spot and stock. sure enough in worked out and i got to 60 yards of him and watched him strut for a bit and then threw out a call and had a hen behind me yelping as well and it brought him to 30 yards and i put him down. after that the wind picked up and never stopped the rest of trip. sense opening day i have been watching the weather and today seemed like it was going to be a great day to be up there with very little wind. woke up and midnight and made the five hour drive. talked to three gobblers but couldn't get them in until i drove to another spot and at 0950 i put down my second turkey for the season. got lucky and the bird gobbled once and ran right to me and i put him down took about five minutes from first call tell i shot fasted turkey hunt i have had. cant wait tell next year.

Anyone doing the over the counter archery turkey
couesdeerhntr replied to couesdeerhntr's topic in Turkeys!
I'm pretty sure it is. I asked AGFD that at the R2 office and they confirmed it, if memory serves me correctly. Of course, with as much as I have going on, its possible my memory is fuzzy on that. It is good for both. I'm going for a day or two up to Unit 1. Brian Glad you guys cleared that up for me because after reading this i looked at my otc tag that i got from walmart and it said nothing about spring turkey and just said resident turkey tag was hoping i didnt buy the wrong tag and i am glad to know i can use it in the fall as well if i am understanding you guys right -

Would love to meet up because i will prob be solo but not going to be able to get up tell that following monday because i work thru sunday but thanks for the invite kimber. Pm me and let me know how it went an good luck to you kimber -
I would say the southern units are a good bet. All of them have deer. My advice would be get some good glass and find some deer. And depending on the time you have the deer at that time should be getting ready for the rut and should be starting to mark there territory so look for signs of that and maybe u could pop up a blind or two in some active areas

Thanks tjhunt

in campnichols pic on his new mexico gobbler which is a rio looks just like the bird i shot today
-
what do you guys think of first pick?looks kind of like a rio grande? both birds were shot close to reserve nm. bottom pic is a merriams for sure but the fan and color of my bird in top pic is throwing me off. if it is a merriams i have never shot one with that kind of color that resembles a rio.
