I just saw on AZ Central where G&F website was hacked by animal rights group and that all applicant info was erased from their system. Therefore elk season has been canceled until next year.

Hunting in 22 this morning and made a marginal hit on a good buck. I've read on here before that guys have used tracking dogs to find lost game. I would really like to recover this deer ASAP if anyone knows who I can reach out to and help find him. Just west of Rye Thank you

Thanks for the reply, apparently the state of AZ does not allow the use of dogs to track wounded game. I spent the rest of the day looking for him with no luck.

My personal preference is either a quality 4.5-14 or 3-15, (40 or 50mm) both have plenty of power to get the job done out to 500+ depending upon your ability. If using a quality optic, difference in light transmission between the two objectives will be minimal. If you cant do it with those selections, more power will be of little benefit unless you are shooting well past 500.

This was my first experience bow hunting in AZ and my first bow hunt for elk. A buddy and I spent several weekends in this area scouting and setting up cameras, we had numerous pictures of all things elk along with deer a bear and even a hummingbird. In the weeks leading up to the hunt we set up tree stands exactly where they needed to go to ensure a quick hunt. My opening morning started on Sunday, three days after the opener, he'd been hunting since opening morning without an opportunity at a bull much less getting one where he could even get a look. With all of the activity around my stand site I figured my odds were very good. I arrived at my stand just before sun up and got situated and readied myself for the "impending" shot. Of which elk never materialized after sitting there for several hours, I got tired of this and gathered up my gear and climbed down and grabbed my card from the trail camera and headed back to camp. Once there I loaded the card into the lap top only to find out my "hot spot" was now completely devoid of any wildlife, with the exception of a doe mule deer and a raven. The other cameras in the area revealed similar results leaving me with few options other than spot and stalk. My buddy had few encounters and bulls were still quiet as the weather was mild, that is until around 2 pm when it started to cloud up and began to thunder and lightning which turned into a down pour with hail. For whatever reason this triggered an urge to go on a hike and since I was completely focused on my new found mission and ignored the fact that my awning on my trailer was level. I headed out into the down pour with my waterproof clothes and water resistant shoes focused on harvesting a mature cow. After an hour of this the skies began to clear a bit, although there was still plenty of thunder. I finally hear a bugle, and another and another, closing the distance I found a huge bull with cows, unfortunately they saw me 1st and trotted off with me in pursuit. By the time I had circled in front of them I had traveled several miles from camp and an unfamiliar area, the good thing was I had several bugling bulls all around me with cows which presented a whole new problem-too many eyes, ears and noses to get me within range. I tried several times to get close, always with the same result. I pulled out, marked the area on my GPS and headed back to camp. Upon arrival I noticed my awning was now "U" shaped due to the large amount of water that collected during the storm, however I was wiped out from my walk and too tired to care. Monday morning came with high hopes as both of us headed to this area, morning was slow as all the elk went away from us and we never caught up to them. Walking into the area from a different direction early afternoon we were discussing the game plan as we talked quietly while walking to a vantage point. My buddy and I saw the elk at the same time through smaller trees, at 80 yards we couldn't tell at first if it was a bull or cow due to the cover. After a few minutes we determined it was a cow and I was on my way at a snails pace, she worked her way out of the brush and into a small opening with only two trees between us. During the stalk I had little hope of getting close as the wind was swirling and the pine needles now dry from the afternoon sun made the 60 yard stalk seem futile. Fortunately she was focusing on eating every blade of grass in her path and cared little about anything else. I made it to my self determined goal, a tree that obstructed our views of one another, now all I had to do was side step, pull the bow back and shoot, which is exactly what I did, right over her back. With the sound of the arrow now bouncing between limbs and trees down range distracting her, I had enough time to pull a fresh arrow, nock, side step and release. This time the arrow found its mark with that unmistakable sound, she wheeled around and took a few steps forward into another shooting lane. I loaded another arrow, pulled back, released just as she spun around missing her completely, I caught the arrows flight just as it impacted a rock and flew skyward. My buddy walked down to me as we quietly listened, we heard a crash over the hill as she tumbled a few feet down the hill out of our sight. We made our way in her direction and found her about 75 yards from where I had made the shot. My buddy went to get the quad while I dressed her out, during this process a decent 5X5 walks up the hill and decides to graze 20 yards from me in plain site. I was using Easton Carbon arrows with Slick Trick Razorbacks, the arrow easily passed though the elk and embedded the broadhead completely in a juniper 25 yds. away.

Thanks for the replies. mattys281, I didn't think about having a mount, she would have been a welcome site on my gun room wall. naturegirl, I didn't range her as she was close but would estimate less than 20 yards and maybe 15.

Nice bull! I'm heading up tomorrow to start my trophy cow hunt after my boys Bday party.

After moving here in 07', I was "fortunate" to meet my neighbor across the fence. After several conversations he invited me to hunt WTs in 36A the next season with him and his hunting group. Everything went great up to the hunt, once in camp I soon decided this may have not been the best decision I had ever made. After going over the camp do's and dont's he "The Mayor" pulls out a map of where I can and cannot hunt just in case his hot spot doesn't pan out, he didn't want anyone disturbing his Plan, B,C,D or E. After spending 3 unsuccessful days observing terrain devoid of wildlife I decided to venture away from my allotted public land real estate only to find a decent little buck that I was able to harvest. Needless to say you needed an ax to cut the tension in camp that night. And to top it off one of my tenderloins mysteriously disappeared while hanging in camp, I was told I must have cut it out while gutting the animal.

Checked cameras last weekend, activity is getting stronger in the area we have cameras set up in. The rains have moved animals out of lower country and up higher to the flatter lands, I had 1600 pics in a two week period, yikes, glad these cameras aren't using film! This guy looks to be pushing 24"+, wouldn't mind putting a tag on him come bow season in a couple weeks. These two showed up twice, it will be interesting to see how they develop in the coming weeks. There are several cows and calves that frequent this spot daily, looking forward to opening day!

1st year bow hunting in AZ for anything, finally got some deer activity on the cams last weekend. Should be a fun filled fall, can't wait.

My two boys started shooting a cheapo Barnett compound, although my leftie had trouble shooting it and has demanded he get a proper bow for his condition. The youth Diamond looks like a nice bow (I shoot an Outback), is there a retailer in Phoenix area that has these available to test drive?

Well, maybe not Tinkerbell but pretty neat non the less. 1st bear on camera, this guy tried to chew on my camera as I had a picture pointing into the tree just prior to this shot. A couple smallish bulls. Note the apple on the ground, where is the apple now? Lastly, a picture of one of my girls I hope to meet up with on my September hunt. This one thinks she is invincible apparently, I can't stand it when they act like this.

kidso, No cattle in this area that I have seen. I placed it so it catches run off, otherwise I stack water containers on a dolly which is not bad as it is all down hill.

Just back from up North, here is my newbie trail cam results. My buddy was excited about the nice bull, however I was hoping for lots of cows. I changed up my setup and hopefully will get better results when I check again in a couple weeks. He had better luck on both of his, several nice bulls and plenty of cows for me, also seen a great looking buck Antelope in the pines!

I have dealt with Mike at DTECH on numerous occasions and does pretty good work and is very reliable. Another good one is White Oak Armory, (John Hollingsworth if memory serves) he has supplied barrels for me for personal builds and I have never been disappointed.
