question... shooting targets versus animals
naturegirl replied to naturegirl's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
I purposefully left them off. They mean nothing to me this year. It only needs nubs. I do get to shoot a doe or two in Illinois though -
question... shooting targets versus animals

New practice setup. I'm going to make myself bring a target on my archery deer hunt and set it up on different angles. It's been a long time since I've done this. I'm overdue -
I've used an orange hat a couple times on rifle hunts. It's mostly just to say hey I'm here... don't shoot me... in areas with more hunters. Thanks for the reminder to bring something orange along for the pack out

Good luck to everyone who is heading out this weekend!

I'll be sitting out opener for the first time, but I'm celebrating because I was given extra time with my daughter instead. I will be daydreaming, though, about all the bucks I've been seeing until I make it back up closer to my bull hunt. God's country was plumb full of critters last week. I'm amazed at how many bucks I'm seeing. These were within bow range and all seemed plenty small enough for me to tackle solo as my first deer kill. I swear that biggest buck wanted to walk right into me. Don't forget an OTC turkey tag & to check the expiration date of your hunting license. I was one of the dumb ones who had 2 licenses at once so now mine is about to expire. And take a shot at one of these if you get a chance! I find them very challenging with a bow & have missed a ton, but connected with an arrow once Archery deer means we are getting closer to elk season!!!!! -
question... shooting targets versus animals
naturegirl replied to naturegirl's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
it's some level of control as mentioned variously above. For me: As fluttered with butterflies and excitement as I may feel, or have imagined it, I'm taking something's life. I'm not thinking 'I hope this ends up well, I hope it doesn't move, oh my goodness..' NOPE. I am thinking 'I know this arrow will hit its mark, this animal is (expletive) mine..' Everything in my body goes numb except that little piece of working brain I have left and my trigger/release finger. For that split second, I treat that innocent critter like it murdered my family. Works for me Confidence -
question... shooting targets versus animals

I was on a field on Illinois and a pretty flat area with the bull. He may have been ever so slightly higher than me. Pretty much flat ground. I can hit a javi at 5 yards running above me on an incline. Go figure. -

Follow through makes sense to me. Wind wasnt an issue either time. It was dead calm the morning I shot my bull. I would or could think mechanical issues but if I practice ok then I should be able to shoot an animal ok equipment wise. I always shoot a couple broadheads prior even though I'm use the same ones. Excitement I can't help although I seem to do pretty well maintaining my composure mostly. Photography is helping me a lot with that just through so much close up exposure, trying to get a "shot," patience, etc . Follow through on a live animal...there's not much way for me to work on that now that I've scared all the yotes away. Speaking of which I missed left on yotes a lot too. Mental note made. -
Sorry I have to remove this item. It isn't exactly what I thought when I opened it up because a different saw is inside.

Right after first light... but I unfortunately did not recover him. Its amazing how those few seconds will be forever etched into my mind.

You shouldn't need a guides license to sell a video of an animal. He asked how much could be made for selling a video of the animal (if he had a video).

There is an article on CWT about the metatarsal gland on the rear lower leg. It's a good identifier for Coues, Mule deer, or hybrids if you can see it.

Nice! The pics are very cool! Must be a quiet camera because the fox was close!

You are awesome! I wish I had the extra money to help. I'll send prayers instead. -
I'm with the DIY year-long hunting sabbatical. If I could afford the tag, I could afford a year off. And I'd take a hard horned animal drives me crazy they always take their trophies in velvet.

Female Mountain Lion Screaming for mates in front…: Here we go. This is the sound.
-
Please tell her I'm sorry I was told they were there. I've been tromping around 6A for over 10 years and never saw one. It did open my eyes A LOT when I was told by someone who had night vision goggles that he saw over a dozen lions in one night somewhere near Stoneman. Freaky! I slept in the back of the truck the first night but inside the second night because it sure did look like a slight chance of rain... Lol PS- I always have my lion tag with me. I've bought one every single year just in case. I'll agree my sidearm needs upgraded in the future. That's on my list. I also would've had a shot at 2 coyotes the night before if I had a rifle with me.
-
I'm hearing it's kinda rare to witness a female lion calling for a mate. I know I'll never forget the sound. It is deeply engrained. I've thought after the fact how nice it would be if I had taken a video with audio. Yeah right. I wasn't moving an inch.

My mom has a paid for Toyota Highlander with 73000 miles on it. She is the original owner and has done all scheduled maintenance through the dealer never missing anything. When she starts her car cold sometimes you can hear a slight rev at the end of the start cycle. This was diagnosed by Toyota as one or possibly both of the variable valve timing with a repair cost of $5000-8000. Her warranty expired at 60,000 miles. She is planning to retire in 2 years after working as a nurse forever. We have no mechanics in the family and we don't know how to fix cars. Which is better, sucking up a new car purchase with a good warranty thinking this may be her last car purchase or put the money into this repair and hoping she gets 150000 miles out of the Highlander, which was her original goal. Then in about 6 years buying a new car during retirement. A reliable vehicle is very important as she is a single woman. Money is the issue as well. Which do you think is a better financial decision? She is also without a vehicle until she decides. On a side note, Toyota will offer some sort of discount on the repair because she has loyally done all maintenance. Apparently 2008 was the first year this valve timing thing was used in the Highlander and there have been some issues. Thanks

That's a lot of pages about wild horses. My take is yes they need managed, but because of the tree huggers (me included) they will not be doing it at this time. People have feelings. Many people develop feelings toward animals. The petitions started by passion for something in this case the horses. Why don't hunters band together like that when there is an issue? Is it because hunting is predominantly men? Hmmm. I'm betting the majority of the main people behind saving the horses are women or at least women got the momentum going. Just got an email this morning saying Pamela Anderson signed it...lol I know the roundup will happen but they will need to give it some more thought.

question about auto repairs versus buying a new car
naturegirl replied to naturegirl's topic in The Campfire
She has spoken to 2 other people so far (one a small shop & one a mechanic who works out of his home garage) both are under $2000. I'm glad she is listening and getting away from the dealer. She doesn't trust any mechanics but for some reason trusts the dealer more. Thank you very much
