I didn't know what forum to post these pictures in SOooooo! It was about 107 degrees on this early CA "A Zone" archery season sit ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I went over and sat my Cattail Spring Opening weekend of the July archery season. No Buck for me , but I did take a few interesting pictures of critters as I cooked in my tent. Here's a spike eating Juniper Berries. Here are a pair of Young Coyotes , also eating Juniper Berries . :? Who knew ! Bunies Get Thirsty two. Mr Bobcat got a drink and now he may be looking for those Bunnies. That cat was Eyeballin my tent!

It could be a stray Hound running the area. There are some running loose in different areas. I even found a litter of puppies up in a rock cave in 33 a couple of years ago. I hauled em' out in my pack and turned them in to the shelter in Benson. I Sure wanted to keep one, but tending pups and Couse hunting don't go well together !

Thats a popular rock ! Great Pictures !

As Lance said, it depends on the year. If it's dry and the water is more limited, sitting a tank with a good cover approach is a good bet. The amount and the freshness of tracks on the bank will be a good indicator how many bucks are hittiing it. I'm always prepared to throw up a blind under the right circumstances. From my observations, If the bucks are following the does , they'll hang back to see if it's safe and then come in fast when they decide it's ok. IMO, it's more fun to spot and stalk, but blinds can work well too.

Great scoring deer ! I really need one like that standing broadside at 20 yards in the in the January archery season !! But a 3x3 with nice eye guards will be ok too ! -
We do a lot of the pre-prepped boliling bags as mentioned for easy dinner meals after coming in at dark. Most days we are out from before sun up until an hour after dark with the travel time back and forth to our hunting areas. A quick bowl of instant oatmeal and a large cup of coffee is usually all we take time for in the morning. Pack food includes sandwiches, bagels, trail mix. dried fruit and always a couple of energy bars like cliffs or Snickers Marathon . At mid hunt we take a recovery lunch break and usually grill up a large batch of venision from previous hunts, coated with olive oil and seasoned with basic garlic salt and pepper seasoning. Sliced up fajita style and wrapped in grilled flour tortillas served with good salsa makes nice change up . We aways grill up enough to put in the cooler for a couple more days. A quick reheat on the grill and you got good eats again. As much as I love the chili and bean based burritos ect , I avoid them until I tag out for scent control purposes if ya know what I mean !

I sent off for the same area, so don't be shootin my Javi before I get there on the 3rd !! After the availability date of November 29th, it should be as soon as they get around to processing your application. It shouldn't take long.

Nice! ! That Rack is tall and fairly symetrical. I'm curious to see what he tapes out at. Congratulations. -
That is a weird looking rack !! I found this little guy in 33 , January 2009 ! I'm pretty sure this is a lion Kill !

Yikes !! Sounds like the Couse rut will be over with by January 1st if it's fixin to fire up now ! Post rut makes for tough a hunt with most of the bucks laying up to recover. If it's dry, A blind over water may have to be the strategy.
-
I sure hope the ruts on fire this coming season . We never had much going on the first 2 weeks of January 2010. 2009 was great the 1st two weeks in January. I love hunting the Couse rut. I've had good luck hitting a Grunt tube to bring em' in If the ruts not on I'll do some spot and stalk along with ground blind sitting.

how to get the funk out of my new blind...
bear402 replied to Codywhi's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I use scent killer and try to pack some natural vegetation in withthe blind during transport. I never use the fresh earth scent in the desert, It just doesn't smell natural me. IMO, brushing in with local vegetation provides the best cover scent. Setting up down wind when possible is always a plus !! -
I'll be in 33 for Archery Javi and Deer
