This was the first time I've eve been in 7 east and it was my brother Dan's hunt (late rifle bull tag)last year he was lucky to get a 360 bull but this year the population wasn't there and i just didnt know if anyone had luck with this unit we were on the west side of humphreys peak. oh and dose an early snow affect the pattern of the elk?

we were hunting any where between 8900 and 10500ft elevation and i thought we were just to high on the side of the mountain

i think that everyone is over thinking this the second post had it right you aim and put the dope in the scope for the actual horizontal distance whether you are shooting up or down 308nut you are more than right with atmospheric conditions and external data affecting the trajectory but to break it down Barny style there is a myth busters show that shows them dropping a bullet and it takes X amount of time to drop 40 inches and they fire the bullet and it takes the same amount of time to drop 40 inches... long story short the higher the velocity the longer the distance it takes to drop the 40 inches based on the earths gravity they teach this at the school of infantry in the marines that up or down that you hold for the horizontal distance between you and the target because gravity is only affecting trajectory latterly between the two points some rangefinders have the angle in degrees calculated into a ballistic range for you and show the degrees (i forgot what brand) but they are out there and with coach he is right it doesn't take a phd.

heck depending on where you have to shoot in kaibab could be a 1500 ft of elevation change i would trust proven data in a scope that just has your mrad or MOA and the ballistic data for your specific load for the .280 look at knights armament at their ballistic program Bullet Flight i use it and you can change your rifle barrel length and rate of twist, get real time barometric pressure data and Relative humidity, angle of your rifle, elevation and your muzzle velocity it has every available ballistic coefficient for all bullets, and it will tell you how many clicks you need to put into your scope for wind range in 5yrd increments if you want. it even can calculate the bc that your getting based on real world bullet drop if you have an iPod or an iPhone its worth the $30 to get on target quick the preset turrets could have horrible results if you change your muzzle velocity by 100 fps going from one ammo to another or if there is a high pressure system or high Relative humidity could all affect what happens to your bullet path. if you need to take a 300yd shot at a trophy animal and need to hit a 6 inch vital area i personally wouldn't trust data on a turret that was set up with (probably generic ammo) that doesn't match your specific BC or your specific muzzle velocity and nothing beats getting real world data for your rifle.. how much are you wanting to spend on glass?

there is no scope that has good yardage turrets but if you have the money buy a front focal plane scope and if you want to use turrets figure out your load then go to the range and get the data for the scope and the round you choose if you get familiar with a mrad or moa scope you can adjust by memory 7mag is an awesome round

Just a good idea some gunsmiths will take your bolt and machine it to use a sako or a popular ar-15 extractor that works great and they usualy lap in the bolt to make sure there is a min of 80% contact on the lugs. but like they said give it a good cleaning and have a go at it (cause if its not broke dont fix it) And jeffro i think they are having a problem with the extractor not the ejector because it is leaving the case in the chamber not on the bolt face.

25-06 first centerfire rifle?
travist1 replied to Simple Hunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
just my 2 cents but why dose the parent case have to be a 30-06 or a .308? I think that any bolt action .223 or something that he can shoot affordably and practice and hone his marksmanship skills is more important than having a dream rifl. a .223 will be a good gun to learn on work on and hunt with and LOW RECOIL he is 9.... and it will be a good 400-500 yard gun to plink with and will surley kill a deer at 300 letalone 70yrd that all first deer are shot at and he might make it his preditor gun when he gets older... but i think marksmanship is far more important to be an ethical hunter than the calibre im sure he could shoot a 223 all day and get his shooting positions refined and have fun for a lot less than a 25-06 or a .243 -
Recomendations, please
